La Voce (Italian: the Voice) was an Italian weekly literary magazine which was published in Florence, Italy, between 1908 and 1916. The magazine is also one of the publications which contributed to the cultural basis of the early forms of Fascism. [1] It also contributed to the development of the concept of Europeanism. [2]
La Voce was established as a weekly cultural review by Giuseppe Prezzolini, an anti-conformist Italian author, in 1908. [3] [4] Prezzolini was also co-founder of another magazine, Leonardo . [4] La Voce was based in Florence, [5] [6] and Giovanni Papini was functional in its establishment. [7] [8] The first issue of La Voce appeared on 20 December 1908. [9]
Prezzolini stopped his writings in the magazine in 1912 due to disagreements with other significant contributors, including Papini, over Italy's intervention in the Libyan war. [10] He resigned from the magazine as editor-in-chief, a post which he held between 1908 and 1913. [10] [11] Papini also left the magazine in 1913. [10] Prezzolini was succeeded by Giuseppe de Robertis as editor-in-chief who held the post from December 1914 to December 1916. [10]
Soon after its inception La Voce appeared as the most influential forum for dissenters in Italy to discuss "social problems created by the new forms of human coexistence in the new industrial world." [12] The early contributors of the magazine considered poetry as a social commitment and moral responsibility. [4] The ultimate goal of the magazine was to produce involved readers having social awareness [13] and to improve spiritual unity of all Italians. [14] To this end La Voce employed a language and approach that would welcome all classes. [13] Sigmund Freud's theories on sexuality were first introduced to Italians by the magazine via an article by Roberto Assagioli published in 1910. [9]
Until 1914 La Voce exclusively focused on philosophical, ethical and political affairs [3] in addition to literary content. [15] During the period between 14 December 1914 and 31 December 1916 the magazine was published with the title La Voce Bianca. [10] The content of the magazine also changed, and it became a pure literary review using the motto, "know how to read". [3] The writers of the magazine at that time commonly produced poetic or prose fragments. [16] It became closely allied with futurists [8] which it had rejected between its start and 1913 while Papini was one of the contributors. [12] Ardengo Soffici 's book Primi principi di una estetica futurista (Italian : First principles of a futurist aesthetic) was serialized in the magazine between February and December 1916 before its publication by the publishing house Vallecchi in 1920. La Voce ceased publication in December 1916 after eighteen issues. [3] [10]
Italian writers and poets Vincenzo Cardarelli, Ardengo Soffici, Clemente Rebora, Giovanni Amendola and Alessandro Casati were among the regular contributors to the magazine. [11] [19] [20] Of them Ardengo Soffici published articles on the Paris art scene focusing on Gustave Courbet, Henri Rousseau, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Pablo Picasso. The topics of his articles also included Impressionism, work by Arthur Rimbaud and French avant-garde poetry. [21]
Another significant contributor was Benito Mussolini, [22] who published articles before World War I when he was a socialist. [23] French thinker Georges Sorel also collaborated with Le Voce. [24] Roberto Longhi was a regular contributor between 1912 and 1916 who published very radical essays. [25]
Le Voce became a model for the German expressionist magazine Der Sturm which was started in 1910. [12] Solaria , an Italian magazine established in 1926, was also influenced from La Voce. [26]
Filippo Tommaso Emilio Marinetti was an Italian poet, editor, art theorist, and founder of the Futurist movement. He was associated with the utopian and Symbolist artistic and literary community Abbaye de Créteil between 1907 and 1908. Marinetti is best known as the author of the Manifesto of Futurism, which was written and published in 1909, and as a co-author of the Fascist Manifesto, in 1919.
Futurism was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy, and to a lesser extent in other countries, in the early 20th century. It emphasized dynamism, speed, technology, youth, violence, and objects such as the car, the airplane, and the industrial city. Its key figures included Italian artists Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Fortunato Depero, Gino Severini, Giacomo Balla, and Luigi Russolo. Italian Futurism glorified modernity and, according to its doctrine, "aimed to liberate Italy from the weight of its past." Important Futurist works included Marinetti's 1909 Manifesto of Futurism, Boccioni's 1913 sculpture Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, Balla's 1913–1914 painting Abstract Speed + Sound, and Russolo's The Art of Noises (1913).
Giuseppe Ungaretti was an Italian modernist poet, journalist, essayist, critic, academic, and recipient of the inaugural 1970 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. A leading representative of the experimental trend known as Ermetismo ("Hermeticism"), he was one of the most prominent contributors to 20th century Italian literature. Influenced by symbolism, he was briefly aligned with futurism. Like many futurists, he took an irredentist position during World War I. Ungaretti debuted as a poet while fighting in the trenches, publishing one of his best-known pieces, L'allegria.
Italian futurist cinema was the oldest movement of European avant-garde cinema. Italian futurism, an artistic and social movement, impacted the Italian film industry from 1916 to 1919. It influenced Russian Futurist cinema and German Expressionist cinema. Its cultural importance was considerable and influenced all subsequent avant-gardes, as well as some authors of narrative cinema; its echo expands to the dreamlike visions of some films by Alfred Hitchcock.
Giovanni Papini was an Italian journalist, essayist, novelist, short story writer, poet, literary critic, and philosopher. A controversial literary figure of the early and mid-twentieth century, he was the earliest and most enthusiastic representative and promoter of Italian pragmatism. Papini was admired for his writing style and engaged in heated polemics. Involved with avant-garde movements such as futurism and post-decadentism, he moved from one political and philosophical position to another, always dissatisfied and uneasy: he converted from anti-clericalism and atheism to Catholicism, and went from convinced interventionism – before 1915 – to an aversion to war. In the 1930s, after moving from individualism to conservatism, he finally became a fascist, while maintaining an aversion to Nazism.
Giovanni Amendola was an Italian journalist, professor, and politician. He is noted as an opponent of Italian fascism.
Ardengo Soffici was an Italian writer, painter, poet, sculptor and intellectual.
Giuseppe Prezzolini was an Italian literary critic, journalist, editor and writer. He later became an American citizen.

Despite its rarity, the book has become famous as one of the finest examples of futurist 'words-in-freedom', and has been described as 'absolutely the most important book that came out of Florentine Futurism'.
