Lamine or La Mine is an unincorporated community in Lamine Township, Cooper County, Missouri, United States. [1]
Lamine was laid out in 1888, [2] from land dedicated by John A. Fray, Martha E. Fray, Columbus Higgerson and Mary F. Higgerson. [3]
Lamine takes its name from the nearby Lamine River. The river was named by Philippe de La Renaudière "Rivière a la Mine" in 1723. In 1720, Philippe de La Renaudière had been sent by Philippe de Renault, the Director of Mines of the French colonies in America to find gold and silver west of the Mississippi River. He found lead in La Mine, but no silver or gold. [4] [5]
Lamine is the only town ("unincorporated community") in the greater Lamine Township.
A post office called La Mine was established in 1838, and remained in operation until 1924 when "La Mine" became "Lamine". [6]
In about 1843, the Church of Christ was organized in Lamine but it disbanded after a few years due to deaths and removals and was reconstituted on August 7, 1865 by Elder P. Donan. [7]
Sam Walton opened a "business house" in Lamine in 1869. Sam Walton's grandson Sam Walton would go on to establish Walmart. [8]
Brothers-in-law John T. Redd and Thomas B. Gibson opened a general store in Lamine in 1871. The store's safe was blown open in 1881 by robbers who stole $700. [9]
Mellor Village and Mounds Archeological District, one of the known Hopewell Indian settlements located at the confluence of the Lamine and Missouri rivers in the Lamine township, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 with a boundary increase in 1974. [10]

Clifton City is an unincorporated community in southwestern Cooper County, Missouri, United States. The community is located on Missouri Route 135 and Missouri Route BB. The nearest town is Otterville approximately five miles to the south. It is also 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Sedalia. The Lamine River flows past one half mile east of the town. The Cooper - Pettis county boundary lies three-quarters of a mile west of the location. The Katy Trail State Park passes the south edge of the community.
The Lamine River is a 63.8-mile-long (102.7 km) tributary of the Missouri River in central Missouri in the United States. It is formed in northern Morgan County, about 4 miles (6 km) southeast of Otterville by the confluence of Flat and Richland creeks, and flows generally northwardly through Cooper and Pettis counties. In northwestern Cooper County the Lamine collects the Blackwater River and flows into the Missouri River northeast of Lamine and 6 miles (10 km) west of Boonville. At Clifton City, the river has a mean annual discharge of 455 cubic feet per second. Below the mouth of the Blackwater River, its discharge averages 1,279 cubic feet per second

Old Mines is the name of an unincorporated community and surrounding area in southeast Missouri that were settled by French colonists in the early 18th century when the area was part of the Illinois Country of New France. The early settlers came to mine for lead, and their descendants still inhabit the area where, through a combination of geographic and cultural isolation, they maintained a distinctive French culture well into the 20th century. As recently as the late 1980s there may have been a thousand native speakers of the region's Missouri French dialect. This culturally distinct population has sometimes been referred to as "paw-paw French" and lives in an amorphous area in Washington, Jefferson, and St. Francois counties roughly 15 miles (24 km) either side of a line from Potosi to De Soto. The community of Old Mines itself is in northeastern Washington County, six miles north of Potosi.
