Larissa Ping Liew (born 18 March 1999) is a Malaysian model and beauty pageant titleholder, who was crowned Miss World Malaysia 2018. She represented Malaysia at the global Miss World 2018 pageant, where she placed in the Top 30. [1]

Personal life

Larissa was born and raised in Kuching, Sarawak. Her father is Malaysian Chinese while her mother is Kenyah, an indigenous tribe in the Borneo Island. [2] Ping is fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia, as well as the Sarawakian Malay dialect. [3]

She studied at the St. Joseph's Private School, Kuching during her secondary school years and scored straight A’s in her SPM. She finished her foundation in arts at HELP University. [4] [5] She was awarded 100% School Achiever Scholarship Award (SASA) totaling RM 20,000 for her foundation programme which she completed in 2018, scoring 8 High Distinctions and 5 Distinctions. [5]

In 2019, Larissa enrolled in the University of Malaya to further her undergraduate studies in Law. [6]

Beauty pageants

Miri Division Keligit Orang Ulu 2018

Larissa was crowned the winner of Miri Division Keligit Orang Ulu 2018 in May 2018. The pageant is held annually in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak festival. [7]

Miss World Malaysia 2018

Larissa was crowned as Miss World Malaysia 2018 pageant as well as winning the Miss Talent and Miss Photogenic awards at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching in Sarawak on 8 September 2018. She succeeded outgoing Miss World Malaysia 2016, Tatiana Kumar. [8]

Miss World 2018

After a year of absence, Larissa represented Malaysia at the Miss World 2018 pageant held in China on 8 December 2018. She was placed in the Top 30 as well as placing in the Top 5 Best Talent category, the Top 5 Best Designer category, the Top 32 Top Model category and the Top 10 Multimedia category. [9]

Humanitarian works

Larissa is an avid advocate for children's education, spends her free time teaching Myammar refugee children at Zomi Education Centre in Malaysia. [5] In 2018, she spearheaded the "Indigenous Digital Outreach Programme", together with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and The Champions Kuching at SK Long Seridan, Marudi, Sarawak. The project facilitated the setup of a computer lab, restocking the school library and replacing some of the ceiling fans and lights. [11]

Sarawak State of Malaysia

Sarawak is a state of Malaysia. The largest among the 13 states, with an area almost equal to that of Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak is located in northwest Borneo Island, and is bordered by the Malaysian state of Sabah to the northeast, Kalimantan to the south, and Brunei in the north. Dayak people Borneo ethnic group

The Dayak or Dyak or Dayuh are one of the native groups of Borneo. It is a loose term for over 200 riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic subgroups, located principally in the central and southern interior of Borneo, each with its own dialect, customs, laws, territory and culture, although common distinguishing traits are readily identifiable. Dayak languages are categorised as part of the Austronesian languages in Asia. The Dayak were animist in belief; however, many converted to Islam and since the 19th century there has been mass conversion to Christianity.

Bidayuh Ethnic group from Borneo

Bidayuh is the collective name for several indigenous groups found in southern Sarawak, Malaysia and northern West Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the island of Borneo, that are broadly similar in language and culture. The name Bidayuh means 'inhabitants of land'. Originally from the western part of Borneo, the collective name Land Dayak was first used during the period of Rajah James Brooke, the White Rajah of Sarawak. At times they were also lesser referred to as Klemantan people. They constitute one of the main indigenous groups in Sarawak and West Kalimantan and live in towns and villages around Kuching and Serian in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, while in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan they are mainly concentrated in the northern Sanggau Regency. In Sarawak, most of Bidayuh population are found within 40 km of the geographical area known as Greater Kuching, within the Kuching and Serian Division. They are the second largest Dayak ethnic group in Sarawak after the Iban and one of the major Dayak tribes in West Kalimantan.

Kenyah people

The Kenyah people are an indigenous, Austronesian-speaking people of Borneo, living in the remote Baram, Data Kakus, Data Surau, Senap River, Long Dungan, Long Busang, Long Beyak, Bintulu, Miri, Asap River resettlement for Bakun Dam, Long Bulan, Long Jawe and Belaga regions in Sarawak, Malaysia and the remote Apau Kayan, Bahau (Bau), Benua Lama, Benua Baru and Mahakam regions in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Miss Universe Malaysia Beauty contest

Miss Universe Malaysia is a national beauty pageant that selects Malaysia's representative to the annual Miss Universe contest. On occasion, when the winner does not qualify for either contest, a runner-up is sent.

Miss Tourism International

Miss Tourism International is an annual international beauty pageant run by the D’ Touch International Sdn. Bhd. Foundation. The pageant was first held in 1994 at Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, where 23 contestants competed. In 2006, the contest was held outside of Malaysia for the first time, in Guangzhou, China. In 2016, 60 countries participated in the Miss Tourism International pageant.

Cats FM Radio station in Kuching

Cats FM is a private FM radio station airing from Jalan Bako, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The radio covers areas of Sarawak and Brunei. The radio airs in Malay and Iban. The station used to air programmes in English and Mandarin Chinese.

Sarawak's population is very diverse, comprising many races and ethnic groups. Sarawak has more than 40 sub-ethnic groups, each with its own distinct language, culture and lifestyle. This makes Sarawak demography very distinct and unique compared to its Peninsular counterpart.

Dewi Liana Seriestha is a Malaysian singer, model and a former beauty pageant titleholder. In 2014, she represented Malaysia at the global Miss World 2014 pageant, where she became the first Malaysian to win the Miss World Talent category.

Masterpiece is an Iban rock band, which formed in 2003 as Masterjam in Sibu, Sarawak best known for its hit singles, "Sinu", "Kumang Seari" & "Ngarap Ka Nuan Nikal Pulai". The band comprises vocalist Depha Masterpiece, lead guitarist Willy Edwin, guitarist Kennedy Edwin, bassist Watt Marcus, drummer Harold Vincent, keyboardist Valentine Jimmy and Roslee Qadir. The group was renamed Masterpiece in 2005 after Depha was hired as the band's new vocalist. Drummer Roni and keyboardist Dellender Wilson and Timothy are former members of the band.

Sarawak exhibits notable diversity in ethnicity, culture, and language. The Sarawakian culture has been influenced by Bruneian Malays of the coastal areas. Substantial cultural influences also came from the Chinese and British cultures.

Sarawakian cuisine

Sarawakian cuisine is a regional cuisine of Malaysia. Like the rest of Malaysian cuisine, Sarawak food is based on staples such as rice but there is a great variety of other ingredients and food preparations due to the influence of the state's varied geography and indigenous cultures quite distinct from the regional cuisines of the Peninsular Malaysia. Sarawak is famous for its multi-ethnic population. As the homeland of many unique communities, Sarawak has a variety of cuisines rarely found elsewhere in Malaysia. The uniqueness of Sarawak well depends on its ethnic groups. Every native group in Sarawak has their own lifestyle, traditions, cultures and also foods. Sarawak cuisine is less spicy and has a subtle in taste. It uses fresh seafood and natural herbs like turmeric, lemongrass, ginger, lime and tapioca leaves. These ingredients are not only easily available, but also add a hint of aroma, texture and freshness to the delicacies. Food is one of the most cultural identities for natives group in Sarawak with each ethnic has their own delicacies. The Iban popular with “tubu” (stems), “tuak” and “pansuh”, the Malay with “bubur pedas” (porridge) and “kek lapis Sarawak”, the Bidayuh with “asam siok” and “sup ponas Bidayuh”, the Melanau with “tebaloi”, “sagu” and “umai” and Orang Ulu well known with “garam barrio”, “kikid” (broth), “tengayen”, and “urum giruq” (pudding).

Miss World Malaysia 2018 is the 55th edition of the Miss World Malaysia pageant. The grand finale was held at the prestigious Borneo Convention Centre Kuching in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia on 8 September 2018.

Miss Cultural Harvest Festival is a Malaysian ethnic beauty pageant held annually during the Sarawak Harvest and Folklore Festival since 1999.

Miss World Malaysia 2019 is the 56th edition of the Miss World Malaysia pageant. The grand finale was held on October 6, 2019 at Mega Star Arena, Kuala Lumpur.

Alexis SueAnn Seow is a Malaysian model, fashion blogger, emcee and beauty pageant titleholder, who was crowned Miss World Malaysia 2019. She represented Malaysia at the global Miss World 2019, where she placed in the Top 40.

Francisca Luhong James also known as Francisca Luhong, is an Indigenous Malaysian model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2020. She will represent Malaysia at the Miss Universe 2020.
