Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) is a small interdisciplinary Liberal Arts and Sciences honours college, part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University. The institution's curriculums focus on tackling global challenges, such as peace and justice, sustainability, prosperity and diversity. [6]

Contents

The college is housed in a single building that stands beside Den Haag Centraal Railway Station in The Hague, Netherlands. The college has a residential concept in which students typically live on campus for the first two years of the programme.

It is a member of the European Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences. [7]

Programme

The first year of the study programme consists of foundational classes in global challenges and skills such as academic writing and statistics. After the first year, students specialise in one of six majors which will determine their degree: [8]

Accreditation and rankings

The programme is accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). [9]

As Leiden University College The Hague is part of Leiden University, it does not participate in international rankings on its own. The study programme has been awarded a "top rated programme" seal by Dutch education evaluator Keuzegids. [10] [11] In 2021, Keuzegids ranked LUC The Hague as the highest-rated university college and the third-highest rated bachelor's programme in the Netherlands. [12]

Notable staff

Some faculty of LUC The Hague are notable for their achievements in academia, journalism, law or politics. [13]

The college also has several Distinguished Fellows, who are not employed full-time at the institution but contribute to the programme via guest lectures, thesis supervision and advice. [15]

The European Consortium of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or ECOLAS, is a non-governmental educational consulting group based in Europe, that proposes to address key issues associated with liberal arts undergraduate education as a consequence of the reforms initiated by the Bologna Process. University College Groningen (UCG) is a public liberal arts college based in Groningen, the Netherlands. The college offers a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and sciences. Established in 2014, the college currently has approximately 360 students. The university has a diversity of subjects and majors, from which students can choose. UCG is a Faculty of the University of Groningen, one of the world’s top 100 universities.

The Hague Journal of Diplomacy (HJD) is a peer-reviewed academic journal published quarterly. HJD publishes research on the theory, practice, processes and outcomes of diplomacy in both its traditional state-based forms, as well as contemporary diplomatic expressions practiced by states and non-state entities. Prof. Jan Melissen is the Editor-in-Chief of the Hague Journal of Diplomacy. Prof. Jan Melissen (Leiden University and University of Antwerp) and Prof. Paul Sharp (University of Minnesota, Duluth) are the journal's founding co-editors. Dr. Constance Duncombe (Monash University), Dr. Jérémie Cornut (Simon Fraser University, Vancouver), Dr. Marcus Holmes (The College of William & Mary), Dr. Halvard Leira (Norwegian Institute of International Affairs) and Dr. Deepak Nair (Australian National University) are Associate editors of HJD. Founded in 2005, HJD published its inaugural issue in January 2006. The journal is published by Brill/Nijhoff
