Lindsey Chukwufumnanya Abudei, known professionally as Lindsey Abudei, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. In 2010, she recorded music and had jam sessions with rappers M.I Abaga and Jesse Jagz while studying law at the University of Jos. Abudei has released the solo projects Brown (2013), ...and the Bass Is Queen (2016), and Kaleidoscope (2023).

Early life and education

A native of the Igbo-speaking part of Delta State, Abudei was born and raised in Jos. She attained a law degree from the University of Jos and decided to pursue a career in music after graduating. [1] Abudei's parents were involved in music during their early years. She chose to make neo-soul and R&B music after listening to artists such as Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Sade, Prince, Nat King Cole, R.E.M., Skeeter Davis, Andy Williams, The Beach Boys and Omar Lye-Fook. Career

2004–10: Early beginnings and Project Fame West Africa

In 2010, Abudei started recording music with MI, Jesse Jagz and Ruby Gyang while still an undergraduate law student at the University of Jos. That same year, she auditioned for the third season of Project Fame West Africa . Although she exited the platform as an early evictee, she managed to attract a devoted fanbase. [3] Abudei had a brief stint with the Jazzcats, a jazz band. She lent vocals to M.I's "Jehovah", a track from his debut studio album Talk About It (2008). Moreover, she was featured on DJinee's "Thank You" and Jesse Jagz's "This Jagged Life". [4]

2011–present: Brown, ...and the Bass Is Queen, and Kaleidoscope

Abudei's debut extended play (EP), Brown, was independently released on 24 February 2013. It comprises eight tracks and includes cover versions of Aṣa's "Jailer" and Fela Kuti's "Trouble Sleep, Yanga Go Wake Am". The EP also includes three bonus tracks and was produced by Atta Lenell, Jesse Jagz and IBK. Brown was supported by the previously released singles "Drift Away", "The 90s Song" and "Out the Magazine". [4] [5]

Abudei started recording her debut studio album, ...and the Bass Is Queen , in 2014. She filmed the music video for "Out the Magazine" with Kemi Adetiba in 2015. [6] On 25 June 2016, she announced that the album would comprise twelfth tracks and unveiled its cover art. [7] [8] In 2017, Abudei announced a concert residency in New York and became an Art OMI Music Fellow. [9] She recorded "Abụ Ya", an acoustic ballad that initially appeared on Brymo's seventh studio album Yellow (2020). [10] On 3 April 2020, Abudei released the alternative ballad "One on the Outside", which marked her first solo release in three years. The song was originally slated to appear on Kaleidoscope. [11]

Abudei's second extended play, Kaleidoscope, was released to coincide with her thirty-six birthday on 6 February 2023. [12] Kaleidoscope is a mixture of electronic and classical music. [12] Abudei jointly produced the EP with Bigfoot. All of the songs on Kaleidoscope include an intermission and were written by Abudei while she was experiencing loss and uncertainty. [13] Kaleidoscope was written as a soundscape for visual and performance presentations. [13]

Artistry and influences

Abudei's music is a mixture of neo soul and alternative music. She has cited Stevie Wonder, Norah Jones, Sade, Eva Cassidy, and Roberta Flack as her key musical influences. [14]

Panshak Henry Zamani, better known as Ice Prince Zamani or just Ice Prince, is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter. He rose to fame after releasing "Oleku", one of Nigeria's most remixed songs of all time. He won the 2009 Hennessy Artistry Club Tour. His debut studio album Everybody Loves Ice Prince was released in 2011. It was supported by three singles: "Oleku", "Superstar" and "Juju". In 2013, Ice Prince released Fire of Zamani as his second studio album. The album contained the singles "Aboki", "More", "Gimme Dat" and "I Swear". On 1 July 2015, Ice Prince was announced as the vice president of Chocolate City. He held the position until he left the label in 2016. He has collaborated with top African rappers like Navio of Uganda, Khaligraph Jones of Kenya, AKA of South Africa, Sarkodie of Ghana among others.

Jesse Garba Abaga, known professionally as Jesse Jagz, is a Nigerian rapper, record producer, and songwriter. He signed a record deal with Chocolate City in 2010 and released his debut studio album Jag of All Tradez that same year. He voluntarily exited the Chocolate City deal in 2013 and announced the launch of his independent label, Jagz Nation. Jagz released his second studio album Jagz Nation, Vol. 1: Thy Nation Come in 2013; it included singles such as "Redemption", "Bad Girl", "Sex & Scotch" and "God on the Mic". His third studio album, Jagz Nation, Vol. 2: Royal Niger Company, was released in 2014. He returned to Chocolate City in 2015 but left the label again prior to releasing his fourth studio album Odysseus in 2017. In May 2020, he released a 5-track EP titled Garba.

"Oleku" is a song by Nigerian rapper Ice Prince. It features vocals by Brymo and was released as the lead single from his debut studio album, Everybody Loves Ice Prince (2011). "Oleku" received positive reviews and became one of the most remixed Nigerian songs of all time. It was also one of the most popular Nigerian songs of 2010, along with Naeto C's "Ten Over Ten" and D'banj's "Scapegoat". "Oleku" won several accolades, including Hottest Single of the Year at the 2011 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and Song of the Year at the 2011 City People Entertainment Awards.

Jagz Nation, Vol. 2: Royal Niger Company is the third studio album by Nigerian rapper and record producer Jesse Jagz. Released by Jagz Nation on March 28, 2014, the album marked a departure from the dancehall and ragga elements deployed on Jagz Nation, Vol. 1: Thy Nation Come (2013). Jesse Jagz enlisted Shady, Dugod, Ibro and Phazehop to assist with production. The album consists of samples ranging from Rufus & Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" to excerpts from movies such as Network (1976), Scarface (1983) and Johnny Mad Dog (2008).

Yellow is the seventh studio album by Nigerian singer Brymo, independently released on 1 April 2020. Sola Sobowale and Toni Tones reprise their roles as Eniola Salami with Reminisce, Illbliss, Akin Lewis, Osas Ighodaro and Keppy Ekpenyong also reprising their roles. Additional cast members includes Nse Ikpe-Etim, Richard Mofe Damijo, Efa Iwara, Deyemi Okanlawon and Charly Boy.
