Lionair, Inc., operated as Lionair, was a charter airline and a general aviation company that operated in the Philippines with base operation in Pasay. [2] It operated charter passenger using fixed-wing and rotary-winged aircraft. [2]

History

On August 2, 2011, the Philippine Senate conducted a hearing on the alleged involvement of the company in the sale to the Philippine National Police of used helicopters that were described as brand new. [3]

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) had grounded Lionair in late March 2020, after a second fatal crash in just over six months. [1]

The IAI Westwind is a business jet initially produced by Aero Commander as the 1121 Jet Commander. Powered by twin GE CJ610 turbojets, it first flew on January 27, 1963, and received its type certification on November 4, 1964, before the first delivery. The program was bought by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) in 1968, which stretched it slightly into the 1123 Westwind, and then re-engined it with Garrett TFE731 turbofans into the 1124 Westwind. The 16,800–23,500 lb (7.6–10.7 t) MTOW aircraft can carry up to 8 or 10 passengers, and 442 were produced until 1987.

On April 19, 2000, the Boeing 737-2H4 crashed in Samal, Davao del Norte while on approach to the airport, killing all 124 passengers and 7 crew members. It remains the deadliest air disaster in the Philippines and the third deadliest accident involving the Boeing 737-200, after Mandala Airlines Flight 091, which crashed 5 years later, and Indian Airlines Flight 113.

On November 11, 2002, the Fokker F-27 Friendship crashed into Manila Bay shortly after takeoff from Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Of the 34 passengers and crew on board, 15 survived.

On September 1, 2019, a Beechcraft King Air 350 crashed into a tourist resort in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines while performing a medevac flight from Dipolog to Manila. All nine occupants aboard were killed in the crash.
