The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a non-profit organisation which aims to set standards for sustainable fishing. Fisheries that wish to demonstrate they are well-managed and sustainable compared to the MSC's standards are assessed by a team of Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs).

Fosen is a traditional district in Trøndelag,consisting of the municipalities Osen,Roan Åfjord,Ørland,Indre Fosen,Orkland,Heim,Hitra and Frøya. The district is dominated by forested valleys,lakes,coastal cliffs but also shallow areas,and in the interior mountains reaching up to 675 m elevation. The western coast has many skerries and some islands,such as Stokkøya in Åfjord. There are some good salmon rivers,and sea eagles and other sea birds are very common along the coast,notably on the shallow area near Ørland (Grandefjæra). The west coast has mild winters,and some locations receive on average more than 2,000 mm of precipitation per year. Part of the Scandinavian coastal conifer forests are located in the valleys of the peninsula,and smaller areas are classified as temperate rainforest with 67 nature reserves. The largest nature reserve is Øyenskavelen,with many nature types including undisturbed forest,some of it classified as rainforest.

Salmonids,along with carp and tilapia,are the three most important fish groups in aquaculture. The most commonly commercially farmed salmonid is the Atlantic salmon.
A community-supported fishery (CSF) is an alternative business model for selling fresh,locally sourced seafood. CSF programs,modeled after increasingly popular community-supported agriculture programs,offer members weekly shares of fresh seafood for a pre-paid membership fee. The first CSF program was started in Port Clyde,Maine,in 2007,and similar CSF programs have since been started across the United States and in Europe. Community supported fisheries aim to promote a positive relationship between fishermen,consumers,and the ocean by providing high-quality,locally caught seafood to members. CSF programs began as a method to help marine ecosystems recover from the effects of overfishing while maintaining a thriving fishing community.

Norway is a major producer of farmed and wild salmon,accounting for more than 50% of global salmon production. Farmed and wild salmon differ only slightly in terms of food quality and safety,with farmed salmon having lower content of environmental contaminants,and wild salmon having higher content of omega-3 fatty acids.

The olfactory system is the system related to the sense of smell (olfaction). Many fish activities are dependent on olfaction,such as:mating,discriminating kin,avoiding predators,locating food,contaminant avoidance,imprinting and homing. These activities are referred to as “olfactory-mediated.”Impairment of the olfactory system threatens survival and has been used as an ecologically relevant sub-lethal toxicological endpoint for fish within studies. Olfactory information is received by sensory neurons,like the olfactory nerve,that are in a covered cavity separated from the aquatic environment by mucus. Since they are in almost direct contact with the surrounding environment,these neurons are vulnerable to environmental changes. Fish can detect natural chemical cues in aquatic environments at concentrations as low as parts per billion (ppb) or parts per trillion (ppt).

US FWS Pribilof was an American refrigerated cargo ship in commission in the fleet of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) from 1964 to 1970 and,as NOAAS Pribilof,in the fleet of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration′s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) from 1970 to 1975. She ran a cargo service between Seattle,Washington,and the Pribilof Islands –the last of the United States Government "Pribilof tenders" to carry out this function –and also made USFWS and NMFS research cruises in the Pribilofs.
