The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) comprises the armed forces of South Africa. The commander of the SANDF is appointed by the President of South Africa from one of the armed services. They are in turn accountable to the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans of the Defence Department.

General Andreas "Kat" Liebenberg was a South African military commander. He served as General Officer Commanding South African Special Forces (1982–85), Chief of the Army (1985–90) and Chief of the South African Defence Force (1990–93).

Warrior-class strike craft

The Warrior-class strike craft are in service with the South African Navy, with the design being a modified Sa'ar 4 (Reshef)-class fast attack craft. The class was initially known as the Minister class as all the boats were named after South African Ministers of Defence, before being renamed Warrior-class after 1994. The strike craft flotilla was known as SAS Scorpion.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lambert Jackson Woodburne</span> South African admiral (1939–2013)

Vice Admiral Lambert Jackson Woodburne was Chief of the South African Navy from 1 July 1990 to 31 August 1992. He is one of only two people to have been awarded the Van Riebeeck Decoration, which he received for Special Forces operations in Tanzania. He was more commonly known by his nickname "Woody".

Vice Admiral Johan Retief was the Chief of the South African Navy from 2000 to 2005.

Vice Admiral Martyn Trainor is a retired South African Navy Officer, who served as Chief of Corporate Staff of the South African National Defence Force.

Rear Admiral Alan Green is a retired South African Navy officer who served as Chief: Military Policy, Strategy and Planning for the South African National Defence Force from 1 Nov 2011. He retired in Dec 2012.

Anthony Neville Howell is a retired Rear Admiral of the South African Navy. After completing school at Fish Hoek High School in 1964, he joined the Navy in 1965. He trained at the Naval Gymnasium in Saldanha and Naval College. He completed a B. Mil degree at the South African Military Academy in 1968 and then volunteered for submarines. He was Communications Officer on the SAS Maria van Riebeeck, and served in SAS Emily Hobhouse as Detection and Weapons Officer, First Lieutenant. He commanded the submarine SAS Maria van Riebeeck from 1970-1980. From 1981 to 1983. Director Naval Personnel Plans at Naval HQ during 1986-1989. He was the Officer Commanding South African Naval College from 1989 to 1992. In 1993 he was promoted to Commodore and appointed Chief of Naval Staff Plans. In 1998 he was appointed Director Naval Acquisition before being promoted to rear admiral on 1 April 1999 with appointment as Chief Director Maritime Warfare. He retired from the Navy on 31 July 2001
