Southend-on-Sea, commonly referred to as Southend, is a coastal city and unitary authority area with borough status in southeastern Essex, England. It lies on the north side of the Thames Estuary, 40 miles (64 km) east of central London. It is bordered to the north by Rochford and to the west by Castle Point. It is home to the longest pleasure pier in the world, Southend Pier. London Southend Airport is located north of the city centre.
Southend United Football Club is a semi-professional association football club based in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England, and competing in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. Southend are known as "The Shrimpers", a reference to the area's maritime industry included as one of the quarters on the club badge.
Philip Brown is an English former professional footballer and coach who was most recently the manager of Barrow. As a player, Brown was a right-back who made over six hundred league appearances in an eighteen-year career, but never made it to the top flight. However, as a manager, he became the first to lead Hull City to the top division in their 104-year history, winning the Championship play-offs in 2008 after a 1–0 win against Bristol City at Wembley Stadium. He also guided Southend United to promotion from League Two to League One in 2014–15.

Southend United F.C. is a professional football club formed in 1906 and based in Southend-on-Sea. Initially playing in the Southern League, the club joined the Football League in 1920 and then competed in the third tier of English football for most subsequent seasons. By 2009 the club had major financial difficulties but avoided administration on several occasions. The financial problems continued through to the early 2020s, during which it was relegated from the Football League to the fifth tier National League, with the club subject to numerous winding-up petitions.
Ronald Martin is a British businessman who is chief executive of Martin Dawn PLC, an Essex, United Kingdom-based property development company. After taking an ownership stake in the club in November 1998, he has, since 2000, also been the chairman of Southend United Football Club, championing the club's move to a proposed new stadium at Fossetts Farm during financial struggles, including 18 winding-up petitions, at the club. Under his ownership, the club dropped from the Championship in 2007 to the fifth tier National League in 2021.
