First Reformed is a 2017 American drama film written and directed by Paul Schrader. [1] It stars Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, and Cedric the Entertainer (credited as Cedric Kyles), and follows a Protestant minister faced with questions of faith and morality while serving as pastor of a dwindling historical church.

First Reformed was screened in the main competition section of the 74th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2017, [2] and was theatrically released in the United States on May 18, 2018, by A24, where it grossed $3.4 million in its theatrical run. [3] [4] The film was praised by critics for Hawke's performance and Schrader's screenplay and direction. Both the National Board of Review and American Film Institute listed it as one of the Top 10 Films of 2018, with the former also awarding Schrader the award for Best Original Screenplay. At the Independent Spirit Awards, the film received nominations for Best Film, Best Male Lead (Hawke), Best Director and Best Screenplay. At the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, the film received two nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Paul Joseph Schrader is an American screenwriter, film director, and film critic. He first became known for writing the screenplay of Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976). He later continued his collaboration with Scorsese, writing or co-writing Raging Bull (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Bringing Out the Dead (1999). Schrader has also worked extensively as a director: his 23 films include Blue Collar (1978), Hardcore (1979), American Gigolo (1980), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), Light Sleeper (1992), Affliction (1997), and First Reformed (2017), with the last of these earning him his first Academy Award nomination. Schrader's work frequently depicts "man in a room" stories which feature isolated, troubled men confronting an existential crisis.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? is a 2018 American biographical drama film directed by Marielle Heller, with a screenplay by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty based on the 2008 confessional memoir of the same name by Lee Israel. Melissa McCarthy stars as Israel, and the story follows her attempts to revitalize her failing writing career by forging letters from deceased authors and playwrights. The film also features Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells, Jane Curtin, Anna Deavere Smith, Stephen Spinella, and Ben Falcone in supporting roles. Israel took the title from an apologetic line in a letter in which she posed as Dorothy Parker.

The Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Feature is one of the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards and was first awarded in 2004 with Alexander Payne's Sideways being the first recipient of the award.

The Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actor was one of the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards awarded between 2013 and 2020. In 2021, it was replaced by the gender neutral awards for Outstanding Lead Performance and Outstanding Supporting Performance.

<i>Shirkers</i> 2018 documentary film by Sandi Tan

Shirkers is a 2018 British-American documentary film by Singapore-born filmmaker Sandi Tan about the making of an independent thriller featuring a teenage assassin set in Singapore. It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival in January and won the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award, making her the second Singapore-born filmmaker after Kirsten Tan to win an award at the festival. It was also nominated for the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Documentary.

The 28th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on November 26, 2018. The nominees were announced on October 18, 2018. Actors Willem Dafoe and Rachel Weisz, director Paul Greengrass and producer Jon Kamen received tribute awards.

The 17th Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Awards were announced on December 3, 2018.

The nominations for the 19th Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards, honoring the best in filmmaking in 2018, were announced on December 12, 2018. The Favourite led with six nominations.

The 2017–18 film awards season began in November 2017 with the Gotham Independent Film Awards 2017 and ended in March 2018 with the 90th Academy Awards.
