The Battle of Maiwand, fought on 27 July 1880, was one of the principal battles of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Under the leadership of Ayub Khan, the Afghan forces defeated a much smaller British force consisting of two brigades of British and Indian troops under Brigadier-General George Burrows, albeit at a high price: between 2,050 and 2,750 Afghan warriors were killed, and probably about 1,500 wounded. British and Indian forces suffered 1,200 dead.

The Kabul Premier League, also known as Kabul City League, was the first domestic football club league in Afghanistan. It was established in 1946, comprising 12 clubs. Other regional or city leagues existed in the seventies in Herat, Kandahar and Mazar-e Sharif. The main venue was the Ghazi Stadium in Kabul, and games were held on different days due to lack of stadiums. It was replaced by the Afghan Premier League.

Hafizullah Qadami Ke madaresh zandst is an Afghan football player, who has played for Afghanistan national football team. He plays as a forward and has played football with Maiwand Kabul FC since 2003. Qadami is considered one of Afghanistan's best players.

FC Maiwand Kabul is a football team based in Afghanistan, last playing in the Kabul Premier League. The club was founded by Muhammad Kabir Turkmany as Nowbahar Football Club and since 1976 it has been known as Maiwand Juice. The club is a cultural and sporting organisation, active in wrestling, taekwondo and football.

Bashir Ahmad Saadat is an Afghan football player. He plays as a defender and has played football with Maiwand Kabul FC since 2000.

Javan Minan Kabul F.C. is a football team in Afghanistan. They last played in the Kabul Premier League.

Javan Azadi Kabul F.C. is a football team based in Afghanistan. They competed in the Afghan Premier League, before playing in the Kabul Premier League.

Shaheen Asmayee or the Asmayee Falcons is a professional football club from Afghanistan. They play in the Afghanistan Champions League, representing Greater Kabul. In domestic football, the club has won a record 5 Afghan Premier League titles. They are the only team to have won consecutive titles, and have achieved it twice. In 2017 they became the first Afghan club to compete in the AFC Cup.

The 2013 Afghan Premier League was the second season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. The season began on 22 August 2013 with the group stage and ended the season with the final on 11 October 2013. Toofaan Harirod head into the season as the defending champions. In the final, Shaheen Asmayee F.C. won their first title, beating Simorgh Alborz F.C., 3–1, in extra time.

The 2014 Afghan Premier League is the third season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. The season started on 28 August 2014 with the group stage. Shaheen Asmayee enters the season as the defending champions, having defeated Simorgh Alborz 3–1 in the 2013 final. It was Shaheen's first title and championship, with Simorgh's second runner up title, after two seasons in a row making it to the final of the country's league football.

Jada-e Maiwand or Jadah-i Maiwand is a major thoroughfare in the old center of Kabul, Afghanistan. The wide boulevard was built around 1948 as a modern main road cutting through the cluttered ancient alleyways. Although Kabul city has widely expanded since then, Jada-e Maiwand continues to be a go-to shopping place for many residents, for it has anything the city has and links to plenty of old bazaars and markets, such as Mandawi and Ka Foroshi.

Shaheen Asmayee F.C. are the defending champions of the Premier League. The season started on 27 August 2015 with the 8 teams again in two groups. Shaheen Asmayee again reached the final of the Afghan Premier League and faced off against De Spin Ghar Bazan F.C. It was the first time De Spin Ghar reached the final of the league.

The 2016 Afghan Premier League is the fifth season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. De Spin Ghar Bazan F.C. are the defending champions of the Premier League. The season started on 25 August 2016 with the 8 teams again in two groups. Shaheen Asmayee F.C. won the final of the Afghan Premier League against De Maiwand Atalan F.C. and qualified for the 2017 AFC Cup, the first time an Afghan team compete in the AFC Cup.

Two bombings on 5 September 2018 at the Maiwand Wrestling Club in Qala-e-Nazer in Dasht-e-Barchi, a predominantly Hazara neighborhood of western Kabul, left at least 20 people dead and 70 others wounded, the deadliest attack on Kabul's Shia since the 15 August suicide bombing. The responsibility for the attacks was claimed by ISIL.

The 2020 Afghan Premier League was ninth season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. The season commenced on 24 September 2020. Shaheen Asmayee won their fifth title defeating Simorgh Alborz in the final, 1–0.
