A veterinarian (vet) is a medical professional who practices veterinary medicine. They manage a wide range of health conditions and injuries in non-human animals. Along with this, veterinarians also play a role in animal reproduction, health management, conservation, husbandry and breeding and preventive medicine like nutrition, vaccination and parasitic control as well as biosecurity and zoonotic disease surveillance and prevention.

Walter Plowright CMG FRS FRCVS was an English veterinary scientist who devoted his career to the eradication of the cattle plague rinderpest. Plowright received the 1999 World Food Prize for his development of tissue culture rinderpest vaccine (TCRV), the key element in the quest to eliminate rinderpest. Rinderpest became the first animal disease to be eliminated worldwide.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Arnold Theiler</span> Swiss-born South African veterinarian (1867–1936)

Sir Arnold Theiler KCMG Pour le Mérite is considered to be the father of veterinary science in South Africa. He was born in Frick, Canton Aargau, Switzerland. He received his higher education, and later qualified as a veterinarian, in Zurich. In 1891, Theiler travelled to South Africa and at first found employment as a farm worker on Irene Estates near Pretoria, owned by Nellmapius, but later that year started practising as a veterinarian.

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, commonly referred to as the Dick Vet, is the University of Edinburgh's vet school. It is part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Olga Uvarov</span> Russian surgeon and researcher (1910–2001)

Dame Olga Nikolaevna Uvarov was a veterinary surgeon and clinical researcher. She was the first woman president of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. She was a distinguished member of the veterinary profession in every sense, spanning general practice and animal health research as well as veterinary politics and high-level contributions to enlightened legislation affecting animal welfare.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science is a faculty of the University of Pretoria. Founded in 1920, it is the second oldest veterinary faculty in Africa. With the exception of the faculties in Khartoum, and Cairo, all the other African faculties were established after 1960. It is the only one of its kind in South Africa and is one of 33 veterinary faculties in Africa.

<i>Bondi Vet</i> Australian factual TV series

Bondi Vet is an Australian factual television series. It follows the lives of veterinary surgeon Chris Brown at the Bondi Junction Veterinary Hospital, and emergency veterinarian Lisa Chimes at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH), in the Sydney suburb of North Ryde.

Sir William Lee Weipers, FRCVS FRSE (1904–1990) was a Scottish veterinary surgeon and educator. Glasgow University's Weiper Memorial Lecture is named in his honour as is the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare. He was President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for the period 1963/64.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Paraveterinary worker</span> Professional in veterinary medicine

A paraveterinary worker is a professional of veterinary medicine who performs procedures autonomously or semi-autonomously, as part of a veterinary assistance system. The job role varies throughout the world, and common titles include veterinary nurse, veterinary technician, and veterinary assistant, and variants with the prefix of "animal health".

Eric Maxwell Robinson FRCVS was a South African veterinarian. He was born in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, England and came to Knysna, South Africa in 1901 to join his parents. He was the son of John Andrew Robinson MRCVS.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sydney Dodd</span> British veterinary surgeon and scientist

Sydney Dodd, FRCVS, was a British veterinary surgeon and scientist. He contributed to the development of bacteriology and protozoology in England, South Africa and Australia. Dodd established a research station in Queensland that was to become the Animal Research Institute, and he was the first lecturer in veterinary bacteriology at the University of Sydney. He became one of the foremost bacteriologists in Australia.

Roy Bengis is a South African veterinary wildlife specialist who served as the Chief State Veterinarian in the Kruger National Park for 34 years. A graduate of the University of Pretoria and the University of Mississippi, in May 2015 Bengis received the Gold Medal award from the World Organisation for Animal Health in international recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of veterinary science.

Herbert Watkins-Pitchford FRSE CMG was a British veterinarian. In 1896, with Arnold Theiler, he was the first to create a successful vaccine against the viral disease of cattle rinderpest.

Lt Col Harry Avery Reid OBE FRSE FRCVS was a 20th-century British military then government veterinarian, bacteriologist and pathologist who came to note as Director of Veterinary Services for New Zealand.

James Spreull Andrew Spreull FRSE FRCVS (1908–1998) was a 20th-century Scottish veterinarian, professor, and scientific author. He was a pioneer of tissue and skin transplant in animals.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">James Hallen</span> British veterinarian

Colonel James Herbert Brockencote Hallen or J.H.B. Hallen CIE FRCSE FRCVS was a British veterinarian who served as Principal of the Dick's Veterinary School in Edinburgh from for the academic year 1866/67 and later worked in British India. His is best remembered for his role as General Superintendent of Horse Breeding in India and Chief Veterinary Officer to India, for his work on the Indian cattle plagues and for writing manuals on the treatment of horses and livestock, some of which were translated into Hindi and Urdu languages.
