Jakub Berman

Jakub Berman was a Polish communist politician. An activist during the Second Polish Republic, in post-war communist Poland he was a member of the Politburo of the Polish Workers' Party (PPR) and then of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR). Alongside President Bolesław Bierut, Berman was responsible for party oversight of the Stalinist Ministry of Public Security, commonly known as the "UB". He also oversaw Poland's cultural affairs. From 1948, he was considered the second most powerful politician in Poland after Bierut, until removed from power in 1956, following Bierut's death.

Kompot or compot is a non-alcoholic sweet beverage that may be served hot or cold, depending on tradition and season. It is obtained by cooking fruit such as strawberries, apricots, peaches, apples, rhubarb, plums, or sour cherries in a large volume of water, often together with sugar or raisins as additional sweeteners. Night Train, also known as The Train, or Baltic Express, is a 1959 Polish film directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz and starring Zbigniew Cybulski, Lucyna Winnicka and Leon Niemczyk. Night Train received numerous awards including the Georges Méliès award, and the Best Foreign Actress at the 1959 Venice Film Festival awarded to Lucyna Winnicka for her role as Marta in Night Train.

Lucyna Kałek is a retired Polish hurdler. The highlights of her career in the 100 metres hurdles were winning the 1980 Olympic bronze medal and the gold medal at the 1982 European Championships. Lučina (river)

Lučina is a river in Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic. It is the tributary of the Ostravice River to which it enters in Ostrava. It originates in Beskids and then flows northwestward through Horní Bludovice and Dolní Bludovice, near Havířov. Žermanice Dam is built on the river. River is distinct for its meanders which are protected as a unique natural landmark.

Lucyna Winnicka was a Polish actress. She appeared in 21 films between 1954 and 1978. She played the lead role in the film Mother Joan of the Angels, which won the Special Jury Prize at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival. In 1967 she was a member of the jury of the 5th Moscow International Film Festival.

PlanetPol was a ground-based, high sensitivity polarimeter based at the William Herschel Telescope on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain that has now been decommissioned. It was the most sensitive astronomical visual polarimeter ever built in fractional polarisation, a mantle that since its decommissioning now belongs to HIPPI. Although the device could be used for a wide range of astronomy, its primary use was the detection of extrasolar planets.

Killing of Henryk Siwiak The only official homicide recorded in New York City on September 11, 2001

Shortly before midnight on September 11, 2001, Henryk Siwiak (1955-2001), a Polish immigrant, was fatally shot on a street in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, United States, where he had mistakenly gone in order to start a new job. He was able to make it to the door of a nearby house before he collapsed. The homicide remains unsolved; Siwiak has been described as "the last person killed in New York on 9/11", although his death was unrelated to the terror attacks earlier that day.
