Macroplea ranina is a species of water beetle in the subfamily Donaciinae of the Chrysomelidae family, [1] and was first described in 2011 by three Chinese entomologists, Qiaozhe Lou, Yu Peiyu and Hongbin Liang. [1] [2] The species epithet, ranina, derives from the name, Ranidae, a family of frogs, because the beetle was first collected from the stomach of such a frog. [2]

The larval host species is Hippuris vulgaris. [2]

This species of beetle is found in China, in Sichuan Province. [2]
