Mahen Gunasekera

Senerath Gunesekera Vidaneralalage Mahen Dias Gunasekera (born 29 March 1953) was a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He was elected from the Gampaha District from the United National Party to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in the 1989 general elections and served as Deputy Minister of Justice. [1] He was the third son of Bennet Gunasekera. [2]

Habaraduwa electoral district was an electoral district of Sri Lanka between March 1960 and February 1989. The district was named after the town of Habaraduwa in Galle District, Southern Province. The 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka introduced the proportional representation electoral system for electing members of Parliament. The existing 160 mainly single-member electoral districts were replaced with 22 multi-member electoral districts. Habaraduwa electoral district was replaced by the Galle multi-member electoral district at the 1989 general elections.

The Joint Opposition was a political alliance formed by a faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) alongside several of the major quasi-left-wing parties of Sri Lanka. It was once the largest opposition group in the Sri Lankan Parliament. It was formed after the two major parties, the SLFP and the United National Party (UNP) forming a unity government, leading to a great degree of discontent amongst many SLFP members, who then went on to form the Joint Opposition alongside other parties from the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA). It aims to give voice to the mandate voters provided to the UPFA at the 2015 general election in which many loyal SLFP members felt abandoned when the party joined the UNP-led government.

He was elected from the Minuwangoda electorate from the United National Party to the House of Representatives defeating M. P. de Zoysa Siriwardena in the 1977 general elections. His son Mahen Gunasekera was a Member of Parliament and a Government Minister.
