Maids Causeway (foaled 11 March 2002) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2004 she won three of her seven races including the Sweet Solera Stakes and Rockfel Stakes as well as being placed in both the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old she finished second in the classic 1000 Guineas and then recorded her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes. At the end of the year she was bought by Sheikh Mohammed and retired from racing to become a broodmare. Her name has always been rendered without an apostrophe, consistently with the street of that name alongside Midsummer Common in Cambridge.

Background

Maids Causeway is a chestnut mare with a narrow white stripe bred in Ireland by the Vallee des Reves Syndicate. She was from the first crop of foals sired by Giant's Causeway who was voted Cartier Horse of the Year in 2000, a year in which he won the St James's Palace Stakes, Eclipse Stakes, Sussex Stakes, International Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes. He later became a very successful breeding stallion in the United States, siring major winners including Footstepsinthesand, Ghanaati, Shamardal and Rite of Passage. [2] Her dam, Valee des Reves was an unraced daughter of Kingmambo. She was a granddaughter of Virunga who won the Prix de Malleret and was a half-sister to Vitiges. [3]

As a yearling, Maids Causeway was offered for sale at Tattersalls but was bought back by her vendor when the bidding stopped at 25,000 guineas. [4] The filly entered the ownership of Lady Richard Wellesley and was sent into training with Barry Hills at Lambourn in Berkshire. She was ridden in all but two of her races by her trainer's son Michael Hills.

Racing career

2004: two-year-old season

Maids Causeway began her racing career in a six furlong maiden race at Newbury Racecourse on 9 June in which she started a 16/1 outsider and finished second by a neck to her stable companion Whazzat. Two weeks later she recorded her first success in a similar event at Kempton Park Racecourse, taking the lead a furlong out and winning by two and a half lengths from the John Gosden-trained Park Law. [5] In July she was stepped up in class for the Listed Star Stakes at Sandown Park Racecourse in which she was ridden by Kieren Fallon and finished second, beaten a head by Queen of Poland. On 7 August, the filly started at odds of 5/1 in the Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse. Windscreamer, trained by Barry Hills' son John started favourite, whilst the other runners included Valentin (runner-up in the Princess Margaret Stakes) and Extreme Beauty (third in the Cherry Hinton Stakes). Ridden by Steve Drowne, she tracked the leaders before taking the lead approaching the final furlong and winning by one and a quarter lengths from Slip Dance. [6] After the race, the filly was bought privately by Martin S. Schwartz.

In September, Maids Causeway was moved up in class and distance for the Group Two May Hill Stakes over one mile at Doncaster Racecourse and finished third of the eight runners, beaten three quarters of a length and a short head by Playful Act and Queen of Poland. Two weeks later she contested the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse in which she started third favourite behind Playful Act and the Michael Stoute-trained Echelon. On her seventh and final appearance of the season Maids Causeway started 3/1 favourite for the Group Two Rockfel Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket. Her opponents included the Godolphin filly Fen Shui, the Round Tower Stakes winner Cherokee and the Oh So Sharp Stakes winner Penkenna Princess. Maids Causeway tracked the leader Fen Shui before taking the lead two furlongs from the finish and then getting the better of a sustained struggle with Penkenna Princess to win by a short head, with the Clive Brittain-trained Favourita in third. 2005: three-year-old season

On her first appearance as a three-year-old Maids Causeway was one of 20 fillies to contest the 192nd running of the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket on 1 May and was the 5/1 favourite. Penkenna Princess, Fen Shui, Slip Dance, Echelon and Favourita were in the field, but her main opposition appeared to come from the Nell Gwyn Stakes winner Karen's Caper and the previously unbeaten Shanghai Lily. Maids Causeway tracked the leaders before taking the lead two furlongs from the finish but was overtaken in the closing stages and beaten two and a half lengths into second place by Virginia Waters. [8] Three weeks later, the filly was sent to Ireland to contest the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh and started second favourite behind Virginia Waters. She made steady progress in the closing stages but never looked likely to win and finished fifth of the 18 runners, behind Saoire.

The "Royal Ascot" meeting of 2005 was run at York as Ascot was closed for redevelopment. On 17 June Maids Causeway started the 9/2 second favourite for the Group One Coronation Stakes behind the Irish-trained filly Damson, winners of the Queen Mary Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes. Virginia Waters and Karen's Caper were also in the field along with the highly regarded maiden winner Discuss. Maids Causeway raced prominently from the start and took the lead at half way. She was overtaken by Karen's Caper in the final furlong but rallied to regain the lead in the last stride and won by a short head. [9] [10] Following her victory, Tony Morris, writing in the Racing Post described the filly as "a model of gameness and consistency". [11]

After a break of more than three months, Maids Causeway returned at Newmarket in October in which she was matched against older fillies and mares in the Sun Chariot Stakes. She disputed the lead in the early stages but tired in the last quarter mile and finished seventh of the 10 runners behind the four-year-old Peeress.

In December Maids Causeway was scheduled to be auctioned at Tattersalls in December but was withdrawn from the sale after she was bought privately by Sheikh Mohammed. [12]

At the end of her racing career, Maids Causeway was retired to become a broodmare for Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud. To date (June 2015), she has produced three minor winners:

After winning once from four starts as a two-year-old, she won the Group Three Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes on her first appearance of 2005. In 1988, Musical Bliss won both her races including the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. On her first appearance as a three-year-old, she won the 1000 Guineas but ran poorly in her two other races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Her record as a broodmare was mixed.

In the Groove (horse) British Thoroughbred racehorse

In the Groove was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. In a racing career which lasted from June 1989 until November 1991 she ran in twenty-one races and won seven times, including four at Group One level. After winning once from four starts at two, she developed into a top-class filly at three, winning the Musidora Stakes and the Irish 1000 Guineas against her own age and sex before defeating colts and older horses in the International Stakes and the Champion Stakes. As a four-year-old she won the Sandown Mile and Coronation Cup.

Alborada was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning consecutive runnings of the Group One Champion Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until October 1999 she won six of her ten races. In addition to her wins in the Champion Stakes she also won the C. L. Weld Park Stakes in 1997 and the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Nassau Stakes in 1998. Following her retirement from racing she had some success as a dam of winners.

Indian Ink is an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who was the highest-rated filly trained in the United Kingdom in 2007. In the following year she was beaten in her first two races, but then defeated a strong international field by six lengths to win the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Throughout her racing career she demonstrated a marked preference for soft ground. At the end of her racing career she was sold for 2,000,000 guineas and retired to stud.

Immortal Verse is an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she showed promise by winning on her debut and finishing second in the Prix d'Aumale. Her early form in 2011 was disappointing as she was beaten in her first two races and refused to enter the starting stalls in the 1000 Guineas. She then made rapid improvement, winning the Prix de Sandringham and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot before defeating a strong international field in the Prix Jacques le Marois. Lillie Langtry (horse) Irish Thoroughbred racehorse

Lillie Langtry is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred at a small stud in County Cork she was sold as a yearling and raced for the Coolmore organisation. As a two-year-old, she was one of the best juvenile fillies in Ireland winning three of her seven races including the Fillies' Sprint Stakes, Debutante Stakes and Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800 as well as finishing third in both the Albany Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She was injured when finishing unplaced in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In 2010 she recorded her biggest wins when recording Group One victories in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown. She was retired at the end of the year with a record of five wins from eleven races.

Devon Ditty was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from April 1978 until August 1980, she won eleven of her twenty-four races, finished second three times and third on four occasions. As a two-year-old she won two minor races from her first four starts but then emerged as arguably the best British filly with five consecutive wins in the Cherry Hinton Stakes, Princess Margaret Stakes, Lowther Stakes, Flying Childers Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. At three she was mainly campaigned over sprint races: she won the Gus Demmy Stakes at Haydock Park and was placed in the Nell Gwyn Stakes, King George Stakes, Goldene Peitsche and Haydock Sprint Cup. As a two-year-old in 2004, she won two minor races but then recorded a 40/1 upset victory in Group One Cheveley Park Stakes. She failed to win or place in four starts in 2005, and was retired from racing at the end of that year. In 2006, she was bought for 4.6 million guineas, a world- record price for a broodmare sold at auction.

Ivanka was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 1992 she won two of her five races, taking a minor stakes race on her debut and winning the Group One Fillies' Mile in September. She also finished second in the Racing Post Trophy and third in the May Hill Stakes. She sustained a fatal training injury in late 1992.

Fairy Heights was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1993 until April 1994 she won three of her even races. She was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in Britain in 1993: after finishing unplaced on her debut she won her next three races including the Sweet Solera Stakes and the Fillies' Mile before finishing second in the Racing Post Trophy. After failing to recover her best form in 1994 she was retired from racing. She has had some success as a broodmare in the United States.

Sunspangled was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1998 until September 1999, she won twice and finished second twice in ten starts. As a two-year-old, she won on her debut but was beaten in her next two races before recording her most important victory in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. In the following year, she was campaigned exclusively in Group One events and failed to win, although she did finish second in the Irish Oaks. She has made little impact as a broodmare.

Gossamer is a British thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 2001 until October 2002 she won four of her eight starts and was one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe at both two and three years of age. As a juvenile she was undefeated in three starts, following up a win in a maiden race with victories in the Group Three Prestige Stakes and the Group One Fillies' Mile. Despite fears that her diminutive stature made her unlikely to improve as a three-year-old, and a defeat when favourite the 1000 Guineas she recovered to record an emphatic success in the Irish 1000 Guineas. The best of her three subsequent appearances came when she finished third to the colt Rock of Gibraltar in the Prix du Moulin. Since her retirement from racing she has become a successful broodmare.

Tante Rose was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her performances over sprint distances. She won a maiden race on her second start as a two-year-old and then took the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut but failed to win again in 2003. In the following year she was unbeaten in three races, winning the Cecil Frail Stakes and the Summer Stakes before ending her racing career with a victory in the Haydock Sprint Cup.

Classic Park was a British-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After winning on her racecourse debut she was beaten in her other seven races as a two-year-old although she was placed in the Marble Hill Stakes, Silver Flash Stakes and Round Tower Stakes. In the following spring she won the Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial before recording her biggest success when taking the Irish 1,000 Guineas as a 20/1 outsider. She thus became the first Classic race winner trained by Aidan O'Brien. Classic Park did not win again despite running well in important races over one mile and was retired at the end of the year. As a broodmare she was best known as the dam of Walk In The Park who finished second in The Derby and became a successful National Hunt sire.

Yesterday was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed considerable promise as a two-year-old in 2002, winning a maiden race and being placed in the Debutante Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes before taking the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following spring she won the Irish 1000 Guineas and appeared an unlucky loser when narrowly beaten in The Oaks. She failed to win again but finished placed in the Prix Vermeille, Prix de l'Opéra and the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Saoire is a Welsh-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 2005. After being sold cheaply as a foal she was eventually sent into training with Frances Crowley in Ireland. In four races as a two-year-old in 2004 she showed very promising form, winning a maiden race and finishing placed in both the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the C L Weld Park Stakes. She showed good form as a juvenile in 2011, winning the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and a valuable sales race at Newmarket Racecourse as well as being placed in the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she recorded an upset win in the Irish 1000 Guineas before being sent to race in North America where she won the Garden City Stakes. She remained in training as a four-year-old and won stakes races at Belmont Park and Saratoga.

Valentine Waltz was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was initially trained in Ireland where she failed to win in four races although she did finish third in the Marble Hill Stakes. Later in the year she was moved to England and improved, winning a minor race and being placed in both the Rockingham Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes. In the following year she developed into one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe, winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches as well as finishing third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and had modest success as a dam of winners.
