Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta, is a Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies 80 km (50 mi) south of Italy, 284 km (176 mi) east of Tunisia, and 333 km (207 mi) north of Libya. With a population of about 475,000 over an area of 316 km2 (122 sq mi), Malta is the world's tenth smallest and fifth most densely populated country. Its capital is Valletta, which is the smallest national capital in the European Union by area at 0.8 km.2 The official languages are Maltese and English, with Maltese officially recognised as the national language and the only Semitic language in the European Union.

Elections were held to elect the local councils of Birgu, Senglea, Qormi, Żebbuġ (Malta), Siġġiewi, Attard, Balzan, Dingli, Birżebbuġa, Floriana, Gżira, Għajnsielem, Għargħur, Ħamrun, Iklin, Kercem, Kirkop, Luqa, Marsa, Marsaxlokk, Mosta, Munxar, Nadur, Paola, Qala, Safi, St Julians, San Lawrenz, St Paul's Bay, Santa Lucija, Sliema, Swieqi, Xagħra, Żebbuġ (Gozo) and Żurrieq.

Since June 30, 1993, Malta has been subdivided into 68 localities, governed by local councils, Maltese: kunsilli lokali, meaning municipalities or borough. These form the most basic form of local government and there are no intermediate levels between it and the national level. The levels of the 6 districts and of the 3 regions serve statistical purposes.

Birgu, also known by its title Città Vittoriosa, is an old fortified city on the south side of the Grand Harbour in the South Eastern Region of Malta. The city occupies a promontory of land with Fort Saint Angelo at its head and the city of Cospicua at its base. Senglea, also known by its title Città Invicta, is a fortified city in the South Eastern Region of Malta. It is one of the Three Cities in the Grand Harbour area, the other two being Cospicua and Vittoriosa, and has a population of slightly below three thousand people. The city's title Città Invicta was given because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The name is Senglea since the Grand Master who built it, Claude de la Sengle, gave this city a part of his name.

Attard Local council in Central Region, Malta

Attard is a town in the Central Region of Malta. Together with Balzan and Lija it forms part of "the Three Villages" and has been inhabited since the Classical Period. Dun Mikiel Xerri 18th-century Maltese priest

Dun Mikiel Xerri was a Maltese patriot. He was baptised Mikael Archangelus Joseph in the parish church of Zebbug on 30 September 1737, the son of Bartholomew Xerri and his wife Anne. Xerri studied at different universities in Europe. He lived under both the Knights of St. John during their time in Malta and the French when they took over the Maltese Islands. He was involved in an unsuccessful revolt to overthrow French rule under Napoleon Bonaparte for which he, together with other locals, was executed on 17 January 1799 at the age of 61.

Districts of Malta

Malta is subdivided in districts of localities in order to administer the country in regions rather than locality. The districts have no administrative significance as the local councils provide the first-tier divisions of the country.

2008 Maltese local elections

Local elections were held in Malta on 8 March 2008, the same day of the general election. This year, the election was held in 23 of the 68 Maltese localities. These 23 localities are: Valletta, Senglea, Żebbuġ, Żejtun, Balzan, Dingli, Fontana, Għajnsielem, Għasri, Iklin, Kirkop, Marsa, Mellieħa, Mqabba, Nadur, Pembroke, Qrendi, San Ġiljan, San Pawl il-Baħar, Santa Venera, Ta' Xbiex, Xewkija and Żurrieq. A separate local election was held on 24 May in Mtarfa, after the previous council was dissolved a monthly earlier. 12 candidates contested the election, in which 3 councillors were elected for the Nationalist Party while 2 councillors were elected for the Malta Labour Party (MLP).

The 2008–09 Maltese Second Division season, also known as the 2008–09 BOV 2nd Division due to sponsorship reason) started on 27 September 2008 and ended on 10 May 2009. Mellieha and Marsa were relegated from the First Division. The promoted teams were Gozo FC and Zebbug Rangers. Zebbug had to start the season with a five point deduction due to incidents which occurred the previous season. The 2008–09 Maltese Second Division was won by Balzan Youths.The runners-up were Melita,who finished 2 points off Lija Athletic. Mgarr United and Marsa were relegated to the Third Division. This was the third straight relegation for Marsa,who 3 years previously were competing in the Premier League and now have to compete in the Third Division.Naxxar Lions were also relegated as they lost in the promotion-relegation play-offs to Santa Lucia.The play-offs were won by Zurrieq.

The Maltese Second Division 2006-07 started on 23 September 2006 and ended on 6 May 2007.Lija Athletic and St.Andrews were the relegated teams. The promoted teams were Birzebbuga St.Peters, Santa Venera Lightning and Rabat Ajax. Dingli Swallows finished the league as champions. Therefore, they were promoted to Maltese First Division 2007-08. They were joined with Mellieha who finished as runner-up.Gudja United and Gozo FC were relegated to Maltese Third Division 2007-08. Zebbug Rangers were also relegated as they lost the relegation-playoffs.

The Maltese Second Division 2000-01 started on 16 September 2000 and ended on 14 May 2000.In this season the number of participants was dropped from 13 to 12.Gzira United and Zebbug Rangers were relegated from the First Division,while Balzan Youths and Luqa St.Andrews were promoted from the Third.The league was won by Mqabba and Balzan Youths finished as runners-up.Both were promoted to the Maltese First Division 2001-02.This was two straight promotions for Balzan Youths.Santa Lucia and Siggiewi were relegated to the Maltese Third Division.

2010 Maltese Committees for Communities election

Committees for Communities elections were held in Malta in 2010. The elections were held in eight hamlets on 27 March, with elections in a further eight on 5 June.

The 2013–14 Maltese First Division began on 13 September 2013 and ended on 27 April 2014.

Xwejni Redoubt was a redoubt in Xwejni Bay, limits of Żebbuġ, Gozo, Malta. It was built by the Order of Saint John between 1715 and 1716 as one of a series of coastal fortifications around the coasts of the Maltese Islands.

The De Rohan Arch, also known as the New Gateway, is a commemorative archway in Żebbuġ, Malta. It was built in 1798 to commemorate the locality's status as a city, which had been granted by Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc on 21 June 1777.

Marlene Farrugia

Marlene Farrugia is a Maltese Member of Parliament and founder and leader of the Democratic Party. She was formerly a member of the Nationalist Party, with whom she contested the General Elections in 1996 and 1998, and the Labour Party, with whom she was elected in 2008 and 2013, before resigning in 2015 and forming the Democratic Party in 2016.

The 2017–18 Maltese FA Trophy was the 80th version of the football tournament. It was sponsored by Boost Diesel, which was revealed during the draws of the first, second and third round of the Maltese FA Trophy at the Trophies Lounge in Malta Football Association headquarters in Ta' Qali. A total of sixty–four clubs participated in this season's cup competition.

The 2018–19 Maltese FA Trophy is the 81st version of the football tournament. A record number of 67 clubs are competing in the FA Trophy. The draws were conducted by Dr Angelo Chetcuti, the General Secretaery of the Malta FA, and Rodney Pisani, the Deputy General Secretary of the Association who leads the Competitions Department.
