Mark's Corner is a hamlet on the Isle of Wight, in the civil parishes of Newport and Carisbrooke and Calbourne, Newtown and Porchfield, north of Parkhust Forest. [1] It is located 66 metres (216 feet) above sea level, [2] and is located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the centre of the county town, Newport.

Name

It was named after Mark Harvey, who owned land there in the 17th century. [3]

Location

Mark's Corner is located in the civil parishes of Newport and Carisbrooke and Calbourne, Newtown and Porchfield, [4] and in the PO30 postcode. [5]

To the north there is Rew Street, Hillis Corner, Northwood and Chalkclose Copse; to the northeast there is Furzyhurst, Northwood, Ridge Copse and Ward's Copse, to the east there is the hamlet of Hillisgate, to the south east there is Parkhurst Prison, to the southwest there is Parkhurst Forest and Sand Hill, to the west there is Little Whitehouse and to the north west there is Little Thorness. [6]

According to Ordnance Survey maps, there is an unnamed stream and wells in and around the forest near Mark's Corner, and there is a farm, called Stagwell Farm. [7]

Methodist Chapel

A Primitive Methodist chapel was built in Mark's Corner by Mr. H. Mew from Porchfield in July 1833, was closed in the mid 20th century, now a private residence. [8] [9]

Formerly, there was a World War 1 memorial in the chapel, but has now been moved to Calbourne Military Museum. [10]
