Mark Francis Robert Baring, 8th Baron Ashburton (born 17 August 1958), known as the Honourable Mark Baring from 1991 to 2020, is a British businessman and a member of the Baring family.

Background and education

Baring is the second child, and elder son, of John Baring, 7th Baron Ashburton, [1] and his first wife, Susan Renwick, [2] daughter of Robert Renwick, 1st Baron Renwick. His parents divorced in 1984. He succeeded as Baron Ashburton on his father's death on 6 October 2020. [3] [ better source needed ]

Lewis Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt, and Mary Ethel Burns, granddaughter of Junius Spencer Morgan and niece of American banking magnate J. P. Morgan, were his great-grandparents through his paternal grandmother, Doris, Baroness Ashburton (née Harcourt).

It was created on 30 June 1885 for the businessman Edward Baring, head of the family firm of Barings Bank and a member of the Baring family. Baring was the son of Henry Baring, third son of Sir Francis Baring, 1st Baronet, and the nephew of Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton, the second cousin of Francis Baring, 1st Baron Northbrook, the elder brother of Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer and the uncle of Evelyn Baring, 1st Baron Howick of Glendale. He was succeeded by his second but eldest surviving son John, the second Baron. John was a partner in Baring Brothers and Co. Ltd, a Director of the Bank of England, and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex. On his death the title passed to his younger brother Cecil, the third Baron. He acquired Lambay Island, north of Dublin, in 1904. As of 2017 the title is held by his great-grandson, the seventh Baron, who succeeded his father in 2012.

John Dunning, 1st Baron Ashburton, of Spitchwick the parish of Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Devon, was an English lawyer and politician, born in Ashburton in Devon, who served as Solicitor-General from 1768. He was first noticed in English politics when he wrote a notice in 1762 defending the British East India Company merchants against their Dutch rivals. He was a member of parliament from 1768 onward. His career in the House of Commons is best known for his motion in 1780 that "the influence of the crown has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished". He was created Baron Ashburton in 1782.
