Edward Sebastian Grigg,4th Baron Altrincham (born 18 December 1965) is a British hereditary peer and Conservative member of the House of Lords.
Grigg was educated at Oriel College,Oxford.
After working at Goldman Sachs, [1] Grigg became head of investment banking at Credit Suisse UK in 2007. [2] He advised HM Treasury on the recapitalisations of the Royal Bank of Scotland,HBOS and Lloyds in October 2008 as part of a Credit Suisse team working from a makeshift office in one of the Treasury's corridors. [3] He left Credit Suisse in 2016. [4] He is a non-executive director of The Co-operative Bank. [5]
Grigg unsuccessfully stood for the House of Commons for the Heywood and Middleton constituency in Manchester in 1997 [6] aged 31 while working as a junior banker at Goldman Sachs. This period was described in his wife Rachel Kelly's memoir about her experience of depression and recovery. He wrote the afterword to Black Rainbow describing her depression and his experience of being a Parliamentary candidate while working for Goldman Sachs and this was subsequently republished in the Evening Standard in 2014 [7] including these lines:
This is the story of how we muddled through together. We tried to combine a career at Goldman Sachs with a career at The Times. We tried working mother. We tried stay-at-home mother. We tried the choices. We found that there is no road map,no safe harbour,no safe roles. But we also found extraordinary joy,extraordinary friendships and the blessing of children.
He took the oath to enter the House of Lords as Lord Altrincham on 1 July 2021. [8] He made his maiden speech on 13 October 2021,talking about his wife's depression,working as a banker,standing for Parliament in 1997 and his family's history. He was a member of the House of Lords Select Committee on the Integration of Primary and Community Care, [9] which published the report 'Patients at the centre:integrating primary and community care' In December 2023. He is a member of the House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee [10] and the House of Lords Finance Bill Sub Committee. [11]
Grigg is the grandson of Edward William Macleay Grigg who became the first Lord Altrincham in 1945. Edward Grigg had been Governor of Kenya,Member of Parliament for the Altrincham constituency in Manchester from 1933 to 1945 and then British Government Minister-Resident for the Middle East based in Cairo in 1944 following the assassination of Lord Moyne. On his death in 1955,the title passed to the writer and journalist John Grigg whose life as Lord Altrincham was partly recreated in Season 2 of The Crown . The Peerage Act 1963 made it possible to disclaim a title for life. The first title to be disclaimed was Viscount Stansgate,the politician Tony Benn. The second title to be disclaimed under the Act was Lord Altrincham.
The Altrincham title passed to John Grigg's brother Anthony Grigg in 2001 and then to his son Edward Sebastian Grigg in 2020. The current Lord Altrincham was then elected as a hereditary peer to the House of Lords in June 2021 in a Conservative hereditary peers' by-election. [12] Viscount Stansgate was elected as a member of the House of Lords in July 2021 in a Labour hereditary peers' by-election, [13] thereby returning the first and second titles disclaimed in 1963 to the House of Lords. His oldest son the Hon Edward Grigg,a barrister at 4 New Square, [14] is heir to the Altrincham title.

One of the oldest institutions in the world,its origins lie in the early 11th century and the emergence of bicameralism in the 13th century.
Peerages in the United Kingdom form a legal system comprising both hereditary and lifetime titles,composed of various ranks,and within the framework of the Constitution of the United Kingdom form a constituent part of the legislative process and the British honours system. The British monarch is considered the fount of honour and is notionally the only person who can grant peerages,though there are many conventions about how this power is used,especially at the request of the British government. The term peerage can be used both collectively to refer to the entire body of titled nobility,and individually to refer to a specific title. British peerage title holders are termed peers of the Realm.
Marquess of Salisbury is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1789 for the 7th Earl of Salisbury. Most of the holders of the title have been prominent in British political life over the last two centuries,particularly the 3rd Marquess,who served three times as Prime Minister in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Earl of Sandwich is a noble title in the Peerage of England,held since its creation by the House of Montagu. It is nominally associated with Sandwich,Kent. It was created in 1660 for the prominent naval commander Admiral Sir Edward Montagu. He was made Baron Montagu of St Neots,of St Neots in the County of Huntingdon,and Viscount Hinchingbrooke,at the same time,also in the Peerage of England. The viscountcy is used as the courtesy title by the heir apparent to the earldom. A member of the prominent Montagu family,Lord Sandwich was the son of Sir Sidney Montagu,youngest brother of Henry Montagu,1st Earl of Manchester,and Edward Montagu,1st Baron Montagu of Boughton.
The Peerage Act 1963 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that permits women peeresses and all Scottish hereditary peers to sit in the House of Lords and allows newly inherited hereditary peerages to be disclaimed.
The House of Lords Act 1999 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that reformed the House of Lords,one of the chambers of Parliament. The Act was given Royal Assent on 11 November 1999. For centuries,the House of Lords had included several hundred members who inherited their seats;the Act removed such a right. However,as part of a compromise,the Act did permit ninety-two hereditary peers to remain in the House. Another ten were created life peers to enable them to remain in the House.
Robert Michael James Gascoyne-Cecil,7th Marquess of Salisbury,Baron Gascoyne-Cecil,,is a British Conservative politician. From 1979 to 1987 he represented South Dorset in the House of Commons,and in the 1990s he was Leader of the House of Lords under his courtesy title of Viscount Cranborne. Lord Salisbury lives in one of England's largest historic houses,the 17th-century Hatfield House in Hertfordshire,and currently serves as Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire.
The hereditary peers form part of the peerage in the United Kingdom. As of August 2023,there are 805 hereditary peers:30 dukes,34 marquesses,189 earls,110 viscounts,and 442 barons.
In the United Kingdom,life peers are appointed members of the peerage whose titles cannot be inherited,in contrast to hereditary peers. Life peers are appointed by the monarch on the advice of the prime minister. With the exception of the Dukedom of Edinburgh awarded for life to Prince Edward in 2023,all life peerages conferred since 2009 have been created under the Life Peerages Act 1958 with the rank of baron and entitle their holders to sit and vote in the House of Lords,presuming they meet qualifications such as age and citizenship. The legitimate children of a life peer appointed under the Life Peerages Act 1958 are entitled to style themselves with the prefix "The Honourable",although they cannot inherit the peerage itself. Prior to 2009,life peers of baronial rank could also be so created under the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 for senior judges.
The Life Peerages Act 1958 established the modern standards for the creation of life peers by the Sovereign of the United Kingdom.
John Edward Poynder Grigg was a British writer,historian and politician. He was the 2nd Baron Altrincham from 1955 until he disclaimed that title under the Peerage Act on the day it received Royal Assent in 1963.
Frederick Richard Penn Curzon,7th Earl Howe,,is a Conservative front bench member of the House of Lords. He is Deputy Leader of the House of Lords and former Minister of State for Defence. Howe is the longest continuously serving Conservative frontbencher,having held a front bench role in some capacity since 1991.
The reform of the House of Lords,the upper house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom,has been a topic of discussion in UK politics for more than a century. Multiple governments have attempted reform,beginning with the introduction of the Parliament Act 1911 by the incumbent Liberal Government,which stated:
...whereas it is intended to substitute for the House of Lords as it at present exists a Second Chamber constituted on a popular instead of hereditary basis,but such substitution cannot be immediately brought into operation
Paul Clive Deighton,Baron Deighton,KBE is a British Conservative politician who served as Commercial Secretary to HM Treasury from January 2013 to May 2015. Deighton is a former investment banker who previously served as Chief Executive of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG),the organisation responsible for planning the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
David Alexander Cospatrick Douglas-Home,15th Earl of Home,was a British banker and hereditary peer. He was a Conservative member of the House of Lords from 1996 until his death in 2022.
By-elections to the House of Lords occur when vacancies arise among seats assigned to hereditary peers due to death,resignation,or disqualification. Candidates for these by-elections are limited to holders of hereditary peerages,and their electorates are made up of sitting Lords;in most cases the electorate are those sitting hereditary peers of the same party affiliation as the departed peer.
Stephen Michael Wedgwood Benn,3rd Viscount Stansgate,is a British hereditary peer and Labour member of the House of Lords.
The House of Lords Reform Act 2014 is an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom. The Act was a private member's bill. It received royal assent on 14 May 2014. The Act allows members of the House of Lords to retire or resign –actions previously constitutionally impossible for life peers. It also makes provision to exclude members who commit serious criminal offences resulting in a jail sentence of at least one year,and members who fail to attend the House for a whole session. The Act does not have retrospective effect.
Re Bristol South-East Parliamentary Election is a 1961 United Kingdom election court case brought about by an election petition by Malcolm St Clair against Tony Benn,the winner of the 1961 Bristol South-East by-election where Benn had won the most votes but was disqualified from taking his seat in the House of Commons as he had inherited a hereditary peerage as 2nd Viscount Stansgate. Benn argued that as he had not applied for a writ of summons,he was not a member of the House of Lords and that the voters had the right to choose who they wanted to represent them.
