Pageantry
Friel, a student at St. John Fisher College, first won the Miss New York USA title in 1978 and went on to represent her state in the Miss USA pageant televised live from Biloxi, Mississippi in April 1979. This was the first of four years that the pageant was held in Biloxi.
Friel placed second overall in the preliminary competition, behind Miss Illinois USA Debra Ann Niego (who would go on to place third runner-up). She won the swimsuit and interview competitions, and placed second in the evening-gown competition to Tracey Goddard of Washington, who would be her first runner-up.
Her victory was New York's second, and came after a string of three consecutive first runner-up placements in the early 1970s.
Friel later represented the United States in the Miss Universe pageant held in Perth, Western Australia in July the same year. She was a semi-finalist in the pageant, which was won by Maritza Sayalero of Venezuela. This was the first time that the pageant had been held in the Southern Hemisphere.
As Miss New York USA and later as Miss USA, Friel campaigned for numerous charities, including the Special Olympics, the American Heart Association, cerebral palsy, Camp Good Days and Special Times, March of Dimes and muscular dystrophy. She was also an ambassador for the American Lung Association.
Holding the title Miss USA opened opportunities for Friel to meet with various celebrities during her reign. Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants opened a lot of doors for me. I met a lot of people and made a lot of friends. She briefly travelled with singer Julio Iglesias and was invited by Mick Jagger (of the Rolling Stones) to his anniversary concert. She was also a special guest at a Beach Boys concert. She also met Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Kris Kristofferson and Cher. Her reign coincided with the murder of John Lennon, which occurred while she was attending a birthday event for singer Ben Vereen.
Post-pageant years
After passing on her crown to Shawn Weatherly of South Carolina in May 1980, Friel returned to study, attending Fordham University in New York City. She signed with Ford Modeling Agency and modeled in a wide variety of American cities, as well as in Europe, as well as making the covers of Good Housekeeping and Glamour.
In 1983 Friel decided to take a break from the "high life" and returned to her parents' new hometown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, becoming a teacher at a local junior college and resuming her studies at Villanova University.
She also co-authored a book “You can be…the Model You!” and board game by the same name.
Friel was also a coach to Andrea Zingg (née Anderson, now Thompson) of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina (formerly East Rochester, New York). Zingg, known for her constitutional activism durning July 2001, managed to garner both local and national attention for the water crisis facing the farmers and ranchers of Klamath Falls, Oregon and nearby Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. Her tenacity forced then President Bush to create a cabinet position to address the long-standing issue.
Modeling agency
In 1987, she returned to her hometown area, where she bought a farm in Mendon, New York and started her own modeling agency. Her company started as a small modeling, pageantry and self-development coaching facility for teenage girls and is now a full service modeling agency with a complete training program. She was joined in her endeavours in 1995 by her husband Kent. She is also a pageant coach, and has coached titleholders such as Candace Kuykendall, Miss New York Teen USA 2006.
Yostin Lissette "Justine" Pasek Patiño is a Polish-Panamanian model, philanthropist and beauty queen who was crowned Miss Universe 2002. Originally the first runner-up at the Miss Universe 2002 competition, Pasek became the first ever runner-up to be crowned the winner after the dethronement of original winner Oxana Fedorova.
Miss USA is an American beauty pageant that has been held annually since 1952 to select the entrant from United States in the Miss Universe pageant. The Miss Universe Organization operated both pageants, as well as Miss Teen USA, until 2020, when the organization announced it was licensing operation of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants to Crystle Stewart, Miss USA for 2008 prior to her suspension in October 2022, thus returning the said pageants to the Miss Universe Organization.
Miss Teen USA is a beauty pageant that has been run since 1983 by the Miss Universe Organization for girls aged 14–19. Unlike its sister pageants Miss Universe, which currently broadcasts on JKN18 and Miss USA, this pageant is webcast on the Miss Teen USA website and simulcast on mobile devices and video game consoles. The Miss Universe Organization previously operated Miss Teen USA, as well as Miss USA, until 2020 when the rights to produce both pageants were licensed to Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart prior to her suspension in October 2022, thus returning the said pageants to the Miss Universe Organization. The parent company of all three pageants and the Miss Universe organization remains the same under the licensing agreement: JKN Metaverse Inc., a subsidiary of JKN Global Group.
Shandi Ren Finnessey is an American actress, model, tv host and beauty pageant titleholder. She is best known for winning the Miss USA title, as Miss Missouri USA. She previously held the title of Miss Missouri 2002 and competed in Miss America, where she won a preliminary award. She placed as first runner-up at the Miss Universe 2004 competition.
Chelsea Scott Cooley Altman is an American actress, singer, model and beauty pageant titleholder who has competed in the Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants and who has held the Miss USA 2005 title.
Amanda Clara Jones is an American actress, former model and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss USA 1973 and then represented the United States at Miss Universe 1973 where she placed 1st Runner-up.
The Miss New York USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the State of New York in the Miss USA pageant. It is directed by D&D Productions.
Tara Elizabeth Conner is an American model, television personality, and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss USA 2006 and has also competed in the Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe pageants. Apart from her role as Miss USA, Conner has been employed as a model. She was a featured model on the HDNet series Bikini Destinations in 2004, posing in Lake Tahoe. She has also held the titles Miss Kentucky Teen USA 2002, Miss Kentucky County Fair 2004, and Miss Kentucky USA 2006.
Terri Lea Britt is an American actress, television personality, author, motivational speaker and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss USA 1982.
Kimberly Seelbrede is an American model and beauty pageant titleholder who held the title Miss USA 1981. Seelbrede is a licensed psychotherapist in the states of New York and New Mexico. Seelbrede holds a graduate degree from New York University. Following the pageant, Seelbrede embarked on a career in television, commercials and print modeling.
Judi Andersen Harrison is an American actress, model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss USA 1978. Andersen was born in Honolulu, and attended Punahou School before moving to Millbrook, New York to study fashion design at Bennett College.
Katherine Amanda Blair is an American actress, model and beauty queen who won Miss Teen USA 2006, becoming the first person from the state of Montana to win a major pageant title. In 2011, she was crowned Miss California USA after originally placing 1st runner-up to Alyssa Campanella. When Campanella won Miss USA 2011, Blair was crowned as successor on June 25.

A native of New Jersey, Campanella was also crowned Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2007 and placed as the first runner-up at Miss Teen USA 2007.
Luna Isabella Voce is a Dutch-Italian model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universo Italia 2013 and represented her country at Miss Universe 2013 but unplaced
Génesis María Dávila Pérez is a Puerto Rican model and beauty pageant titleholder. She won the Miss World Puerto Rico 2014 competition, where she represented Arroyo. She also represented Puerto Rico at Miss World 2014 in London. She was crowned Miss Florida USA 2017 but was disqualified for using outside assistance on hair and makeup.
