The Maserati MC20 (MC being the acronym for Maserati Corse 2020, internal code M240) [5] is a two-seater, rear-mid-engine sports car produced by Italian car manufacturer Maserati. [6]
The debut of the MC20 was initially scheduled for May 2020, [6] but was rescheduled along with brand redesign for September 2020 in Modena. [7] A racing variant was also announced at the same time. [8] The open top variant of the MC20 called the Cielo (Italian for sky) made its debut in May 2022. [9] The car was developed by the Maserati Innovation Lab with an all-electric option slated to reach production in the future. [10] [11] The new sports car is produced at the Maserati Modena plant that is undergoing necessary modernization. [12] The new car's logo appeared on a Maserati-sponsored Multi 70 trimaran's mainsail that was due to race in the RORC Caribbean 600. [13]
In late 2019, a series of spy shots were published online showing a highly modified Alfa Romeo 4C-based test mule of an upcoming new Maserati sports car. Apart for the typical camouflage, the car featured a much larger rear portion and wider track. [14] [12]
Maserati later confirmed that it was using the test mules for development of a new powertrain for the upcoming sports car, but did not confirm whether the car will be based on the Alfa Romeo 4C's platform. [15]
In March 2020, Maserati had completed their first prototype for the new car which was ready for both road and track testing. [16]
On 13 May 2020, a prototype of the MC20 was covered with graphics commemorating Sir Stirling Moss, who died on 12 April 2020 at the age of 90. The Maserati 420M/58 "Eldorado", an iconic single-seater race car was also brought out on the commemoration of its debut in 1958 on the occasion of the Race of Two Worlds on Monza circuit. [17]
On 1 July 2020, Maserati announced a six-cylinder engine for the MC20 called the Nettuno. The engine was described as a 90-degree, 2,992 cc (3.0 L; 182.6 cu in) V6 with a dry sump, twin-spark and pre-chamber ignition system. It also has twin-turbochargers and fuel injectors. The 220 kg (485 lb) engine can generate a power output of 630 PS (463 kW; 621 hp) at 7,500 rpm and 730 N⋅m (538 lbf⋅ft) of torque from 3,000 to 5,500 rpm. The red-line of the engine is set at 8,000 rpm. [18]
The engine's use of a passive pre-chamber is a unique quirk. Inspired by Formula 1 and combined with the use of twin-spark ignition, one inside the small cylindrical pre-chamber placed at the center of combustion chamber, and another placed in the traditional combustion chamber, designed to help combustion in low-load scenarios. The air-fuel mixture, provided by a hybrid port and direct injection system is compressed during the compression stroke of the engine into the pre-chamber, where it is then ignited by the chamber's spark plug. The resulting explosion spreads throughout the traditional chamber, creating a faster fuel burn. The system is mainly designed with the reduction of emissions in mind, but also promises increased fuel economy. [19]
On 2 July 2020, Road & Track magazine criticized a press release from Maserati that claimed the engine is "100% Maserati". The magazine countered that "it's not hard to see the connection to the Ferrari F154 engine and the Alfa Romeo 690T engine". The publication argued that the similarities that were identical to the aforementioned engines included the 90-degree V angle, the firing order of 1-6-3-4-2-5 (identical to the F154-based V6 engine found in the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio), arrangement of cooling passages, cylinders, and liners, oil filter mounting, bore and stroke, and rev limit of 8,000 rpm (the same as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale). However, the unique 11:1 compression ratio indicated that the heads are new and Maserati-developed. [20]
The interior features a steering wheel constructed mostly of carbon fiber, with Alcantara accents. There is a TFT 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25 inch infotainment screen. The seats have leather seating surfaces on the bolsters and headrest, with the middle seating surface made from Alcantara. [21]
In May 2022, Maserati unveiled the MC20 Cielo, an open-top variant of the MC20. It features the same 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 and styling but adds on the two-piece foldable hard-top that has an electrochromic glass roof. The roof system weighs an additional 65 kg (143 lb), and the folding and unfolding of the roof sequence takes only 12 seconds. [9]
The MCXtrema is a track-only derivative of the Maserati MC20 introduced in August 2023, with significant weight savings and more advanced aerodynamics. The Nettuno engine found in the MC20 has also undergone changes to produce more power. Customers who purchase the car will be able to customise it via Maserati's Fuoriserie (custom-built) program, and production will be limited to 62 units. [22] [23]
The car features significant use of carbon-fibre along with other natural fibres to significantly lower the weight compared to the road-legal MC20. [24] Maserati aims for a dry weight of 1,250 kg (2,756 lb), [25] which would mean that it is over 250 kg (551 lb) lighter than the MC20. Double wishbone suspension along with adjustable dampers, front and rear anti-roll bars provide ride height control for the car. [26] The Nettuno engine has been fitted with two new turbochargers, increasing the power output to 544 kW (740 PS; 730 hp), sent to the rear 18 in forged aluminium wheels via a 6-speed sequential manual transmission paired with a mechanical limited slip differential. [27] Stopping power is provided by ventilated carbon ceramic Brembo brakes. [28] Other features include a FIA-standard 120 L (32 US gal) fuel tank, along with a FIA-standard fire extinguisher and roll cage. Air-conditioning, a feature traditionally not found on track-focused cars, is also standard along with a seat for a passenger. [29]
Ahead of the 2022 24 hours of Spa, Maserati launched the MC20 GT2 intended for competition in the GT2 European Series in 2023. [30]
The racing variant of the MC20 called the GT2 made its public debut at the 2023 24 Hours of Spa in June 2023. While the engine and body shell remain the same as the road going counterpart, the differences include an aerodynamic package consisting of a large rear wing, a new rear diffuser and a roof scoop, a stripped down interior having a single seat, fire extinguisher, adjustable steering wheel column and pedal box, a new 6.5-inch display and an FIA homologated roll-cage while retaining the air-conditioning, a six speed sequential gearbox with a self-locking mechanical limited slip differential, two-way adjustable dampers, a racing spec exhaust system and 18-inch forged alloy wheels. An extreme aero package consisting of canards on the front bumper, a front splitter and a newly designed hood is optional. Customers can also add the passenger seat, a rearview camera and a tire pressure monitoring system at an extra cost. The car made its racing debut at the final round of the Fanatec GT2 European Series with the team LP Racing. Took pole position in race one and finished on the second place in the same race, in race two finished seventh. For 2024 LP Racing will compete and defend the title with two MC20s, the teams Van Der Horst Motorsport and TFT Racing will compete with the Maserati MC20 GT2 too. [31] [32]
Maserati S.p.A. is an Italian luxury vehicle manufacturer. Established on 1 December 1914 in Bologna, Italy, the company's headquarters are now in Modena, and its emblem is a trident. The company has been owned by Stellantis since 2021. Maserati was initially associated with Ferrari. In May 2014, due to ambitious plans and product launches, Maserati sold a record of over 3,000 cars in one month. This caused them to increase production of the Quattroporte and Ghibli models. In addition to the Ghibli and Quattroporte, Maserati offers the Maserati GranTurismo and two SUV models, the Maserati Levante and the Maserati Grecale. Maserati has placed a yearly production output cap at 75,000 vehicles globally.
The Ferrari Enzo, officially marketed as Enzo Ferrari, is a mid-engine sports car manufactured by Italian automobile manufacturer Ferrari and named after the company's founder, Enzo Ferrari. It was developed in 2002 using Formula One technology, such as a carbon-fibre body, F1-style automated-shift manual transmission, and carbon fibre-reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) ceramic composite disc brakes, as well as technologies not allowed in F1, such as active aerodynamics. The Enzo generates substantial amounts of downforce through its front underbody flaps, small adjustable rear spoiler and rear diffuser, which work in conjunction to produce 3,363 newtons (756 lbf) of downforce at 200 km/h (124 mph) and 7,602 newtons (1,709 lbf) of downforce at 300 km/h (186 mph), before decreasing to 5,738 newtons (1,290 lbf) at top speed.
The Alfa Romeo 155 is a compact executive car produced by Italian automobile manufacturer Alfa Romeo between 1992 and 1998. It was unveiled in January 1992 at Barcelona, with the first public launch in March 1992, at the Geneva Motor Show. A total of 195,526 units were made before it was replaced by the 156.
The Maserati MC12 is a limited production two-seater sports car produced by Italian car maker Maserati to allow a racing variant to compete in the FIA GT Championship. The car entered production in 2004, with 25 cars produced. A further 25 were produced in 2005 after the FIA changed the rules and reduced the maximum length allowed. The second batch of 25 are 150mm shorter than the originals, making a total of 50 cars available for customers. With the addition of 12 cars produced for racing, a total of just 62 were ever produced.
The Maserati Quattroporte is a four-door luxury sports sedan produced by Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati. The name translated from Italian means "fourdoors". The car is in its sixth generation, with the first generation introduced in 1963.
Gillet is a Belgian automobile manufacturer, started in 1992 by former racing driver Tony Gillet. The company produces the Vertigo sports coupé, an ultra-lightweight (990 kg) 'bespoke' and hand-built sportscar. The slogan of the company is "Supercar and work of art Pure Pleasure!". The first Vertigo was powered by a Ford Cosworth 2.0-litre 4-in-line, later evolutions are powered by more powerful engines: the 3.0-litre Alfa Romeo V6 engine and the 4.2-litre Ferrari/Maserati V8 in the Vertigo .5.
The Porsche 911 GT2 is a high-performance, track-focused sports car built by the German automobile manufacturer Porsche from 1993 to 2009, and then since 2010 as the GT2 RS. It is based on the 911 Turbo, and uses a similar twin-turbocharged engine, but features numerous upgrades, including engine enhancements, larger brakes, and stiffer suspension calibration. The GT2 is significantly lighter than the Turbo due to its use of rear-wheel-drive instead of all-wheel-drive system and the reduction or removal of interior components. As a result, the GT2 is the most expensive and fastest model among the 911 lineup.
The Maserati Tipo 60/61 are a series of sports racing cars produced between 1959 and 1961 by Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati for privateers racing in sports car events including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 2-litre and 3-litre racing category. It used an intricate tubular space frame chassis, containing about 200 chro-moly steel tubes welded together, arranged triangular formation at high stress areas of the chassis, hence the nickname "Birdcage". This method of construction provided a more rigid and, at the same time, lighter chassis than other racing cars of the time.
The Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio are a series of grand tourers produced by the Italian manufacturer Maserati, succeeding the Maserati Coupé and Spyder. The first generation GranTurismo (M145) was introduced at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show and was produced from 2007 to December 2019. It set a record for the fastest development of a car, going from design to production in just nine months. The model featured a 4.2-litre V8 engine initially, which was later upgraded to a 4.7-liter engine in the GranTurismo S variant. The GranTurismo MC, a racing version developed for the FIA GT4 European Cup, and the GranTurismo MC Sport Line, a customisation programme, were also part of the lineup.

Maserati currently competes in Formula E in partnership with the Monaco Sports Group (MSG) as Maserati MSG Racing.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a compact executive car produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo. Known internally as the Type 952, it was unveiled in June 2015, with market launch scheduled for February 2016, and it is the first saloon offered by Alfa Romeo after the production of the 159 ended in 2011. The Giulia is also the first mass-market Alfa Romeo vehicle in over two decades to use a longitudinal rear-wheel drive platform, since the 75 which was discontinued in 1992. The Giulia was second in 2017 European Car of the Year voting and was named Motor Trend Car of the Year for 2018. In 2018, Giulia was awarded the Compasso d'Oro industrial design award.
The Maserati Ghibli is an executive car produced by Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati since 2013. The car was unveiled to the public at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show.
The SSZ Stradale is an automobile developed by Tom Zatloukal, an Alfa Romeo racer and restorer, that was produced between 1984 and 1999. SSZ stands for Sprint Speciale Zatloukal. Based on the Giulietta SS, the aim was to produce a high-performance version with a lightweight and wider body than the standard production SS.
The Mercedes-AMG GT is a series of 2-door grand tourers produced by German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-AMG. The car was introduced on 9 September 2014 and was officially unveiled to the public in October 2014 at the Paris Motor Show. While not directly replacing the SLS AMG, it is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG. The Mercedes-AMG GT went on sale in two variants in March 2015, while a GT3 racing variant of the car was introduced in 2015. A high performance variant called the GT R was introduced in 2016. A GT4 racing variant, targeted at semi-professional drivers and based on the GT R variant, was introduced in 2017. In 2021, a new variant called the AMG GT Black Series was released. All variants are assembled at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.
The Ferrari F154 is a family of modular twin-turbocharged, direct injected V8 petrol engines designed and produced by Ferrari since 2013. It is a replacement for the naturally aspirated Ferrari/Maserati F136 V8 family on both Maserati and Ferrari cars. They are the first turbocharged Ferrari road engines since the 1987 2.9-litre F120A V8 of the Ferrari F40.
The Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 is a track-only sports car produced by the Italian automobile manufacturer Lamborghini under their Squadra Corse racing division. Introduced on 29 July 2020, it was the most powerful and the last purely twin-turbocharged car built by the brand at the time.
The Maserati Grecale is a front-engine, five-door, five passenger compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by the Maserati subdivision of Stellantis, entering production at the company's Cassino Plant in March 2022. Internally designated model M182, the Grecale shares the company's Giorgio platform with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the fifth generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is a sports car manufactured by Italian automobile manufacturer Alfa Romeo. Unveiled on August 30, 2023, the car was made available with two powertrain options, either a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged 690T V6 engine or an all-electric powertrain option. The project began development in June 2022 at the initiative of Jean-Philippe Imparato, head of Alfa Romeo, taking some of its development work from an abandoned Alfa Romeo project that was used to develop the Maserati MC20. The car is meant to be an homage to the original 1967 model and a limited production of just 33 units is expected to begin in June 2024. The cars will be produced by the Italian coach building firm Touring Superleggera.
The Alfa Romeo 690T is a twin-turbocharged, direct injected, 90° V6 petrol engine designed and produced by Alfa Romeo since 2015. It is used in the high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models and is manufactured at the Stellantis Termoli engine plant.
