Masrat Zahra (born 8 December 1993) is a freelance photojournalist from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. She covers stories about local communities and women. She won the 2020 "Anja Niedringhaus Courage" in Photojournalism award from International Women's Media Foundation and Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and the Ethical Journalism 2020.

Biography

Masrat Zahra was born on 8 December 1993 in Hawal, Jammu and Kashmir, into a Kashmiri Muslim family. [1] [2] [3] Her father is a truck driver and mother is a homemaker. [2] She studied journalism at the Central University of Kashmir. [1] She photographs the Kashmir conflict and her work has appeared in The Washington Post , The New Humanitarian , TRT World, Al Jazeera , The Caravan , The Sun , The News Arab, and The World Weekly. [4] [5] [1] She experiences constant resistance based on her job and gender as she is one of a small group of female photojournalists in the region. [6]

In April 2018, Zahra was labelled as a police informer after she shared an image from an encounter site on her Facebook. [7] [8] On 3 August 2019, before the clampdown in India's Jammu and Kashmir state, she was asked to submit work for Journalists Under Fire, an exhibition in New York city which was organised by United Photo Industries and St Ann's Warehouse in collaboration with Committee to Protect Journalists. On the same day, she was contacted by a French magazine for assignments with Real Kashmir F.C., a sports magazine. Due to a communications blackout that started on 5 August 2019, these offers could not be fulfilled. [9] In April 2020, the Jammu and Kashmir Police named Zahra in an FIR under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which is normally used for targeting terrorists. [14] The police said they had been informed that Zahra was uploading "anti-national posts" to Facebook with "criminal intention to induce the youth", whereas she had only uploaded her published photographs. [15] The move was condemned by 450 activists and scholars as an instance of targeting of journalists. [14]

Awards

In 2020, Zahra won the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism award from the International Women's Media Foundation. [16] [17] [4] She was awarded with Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism 2020 for "telling [stories] of the women of Kashmir." [18]

The IWMF advocates for press freedom internationally and often forms petitions asking international governments to release journalists in captivity and offer protection to journalists in danger.

Central University of Kashmir, formerly Central University of Jammu and Kashmir, is a central university located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It has been established in March 2009 through an Act of Parliament, "The Central Universities Act, 2009" by Govt. of India. The university started functioning from May 2009.

Anja Niedringhaus was a German photojournalist who worked for the Associated Press (AP). She was the only woman on a team of 11 AP photographers that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the Iraq War. That same year she was awarded the International Women's Media Foundation's Courage in Journalism prize.

Asma Shirazi is a senior Pakistani journalist who has received awards for her bravery and effort. She is a political commentator who hosts a primetime current-affairs show on Hum News.

Kathy M. Gannon is a Canadian journalist and news director of the Associated Press for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Gannon was attacked and wounded while reporting from Afghanistan. Her German colleague, Anja Niedringhaus, was mortally wounded. Gannon has received extensive coverage as she struggled to recover from her wounds and return to war reporting.Now Senior Fellow, media centre at Harvard Kenedy School.

Zaina Erhaim is a Syrian journalist, and feminist. She works as a communications consultant and trainer with international organisations in Syria, Iraq, Morocco, Libya, Lebanon and Egypt. She has reported on the Syrian civil war from within Syria. Erhaim was the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR)'s Communications Manager, she trained hundreds of people whilst in Syria to be citizen reporters, notably a large proportion of them women.

Kamran Yusuf, also known as Kamran Yousuf is a Kashmiri multimedia journalist. As of 2022, Kamran is a staffer at NewsClick. He also works as a freelance multimedia journalist for various international organisations. In 2017, he was booked under UAPA and lodged at Tihar Jail. Many national as well as international organisations including Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists, Amnesty International and more issued statements for his immediate release. He got bail after six months and was discharged from all the charges on 16 March 2022 by Delhi court.

Aarti Tikoo Singh is an Indian journalist who is known for being vocal on the Kashmir conflict and strongly considers herself secular. She is an alumnus of University of Jammu and did Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University in New York City.

Asif Sultan, also known as Aasif Sultan, is a Kashmiri journalist who has been jailed by India since August 2018. On October 17, 2019, Sultan received the annual John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award by the National Press Club of America. In April 2022, Aasif was granted bail but not released, instead he was re-arrested and booked under the Public Safety Act.

Fahad Shah is an Indian journalist from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He is the founder and editor of the news magazine The Kashmir Walla. He was a recipient of a Human Rights Press Award in 2021.

Sanna Irshad Mattoo is an Indian photojournalist based in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. She won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.

Raqib Hameed Naik is a Kashmiri journalist. In 2020, he relocated to the United States. He is the founder of Hindutva Watch, a research project that documents hate crimes and hate speeches against religious minorities in India.

The International Women's Media Foundation awards are annual prizes for women journalists awarded by the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) since its foundation in 1990: the Courage in Journalism Award ; the Lifetime Achievement Award ; the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award ; the Gwen Ifill Award ; and the Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award.

Irfan Mehraj is an Indian journalist and human rights activist from Kashmir. He works with Deutsche Welle and also writes for various publications like The Indian Express, TRT World, The Wire, The Caravan, Himal Southasian and NewArab. Irfan has specially written about the challenges facing the Muslim community in Kashmir. He was the Editor of Two Circles and the founding editor of Wande Magazine.
