Matta (Lokono: Korhopa; [1] also Matta Karupa [2] ) is an indigenous village of Lokono [1] Amerindians in the resort of Zuid in the Para District in Suriname. The village can be accessed from a road which branches off the Southern East-West Link.

Overview

Matta has a school and a clinic. [3] Matta is connected to the road network of Suriname, however the road was unpaved. In 2012, the government promised to pave the road. [4] In August 2018, the road was finally upgraded. [5] The economy of the village is mainly based on growing cassava. [2]

The village has been allocated a communal forest. In 2018, 203 hectares of the forest were awarded to [6] Creditmarket Investment Company NV who already started to clear the forest to make way for a planned industrial estate. [7]

Murder of Captain Karwofodi

On 13 August 2020, Captain Michael Karwofodi (67), the village chief, was murdered. [8] On 16 August, six teenagers aged 13 to 18 were arrested, and have confessed to the murder. [9] They were from the village and had been removed from the community house by the chief for misbehaving. [10] They confessed that they intended to rob Karwofodi of his money and juwelry. [11] On 21 June 2022, Raphael S, the leader of the group was sentenced to 12 years for murder and robbery. [12]

Ronnie Brunswijk Surinamese politician and former rebel (born 1961)

Ronnie Brunswijk is a Surinamese politician, businessman, footballer, convicted drug trafficker, former rebel leader, and the current Vice President of Suriname. Brunswijk served in the early 1980s as the personal bodyguard of Dési Bouterse, who overthrew the government in 1980 in a military coup. Brunswijk was discharged after asking for a raise, and denied back pay. In 1985, Brunswijk formed the Surinamese Liberation Army, better known as the Jungle Commando.

Chan Santokhi President of Suriname since 2020

Chandrikapersad "Chan" Santokhi is a Surinamese politician and former police officer who is the 9th president of Suriname, since 2020. After winning the 2020 elections, Santokhi was the sole nominee for president of Suriname. On 13 July, Santokhi was elected president by acclamation in an uncontested election. He was inaugurated on 16 July.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname was caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached Suriname on 13 March 2020. The case was a person who travelled from the Netherlands the previous week. On 3 April 2020, one person died. On 3 May 2020, all nine cases had recovered. On 18 May, an eleventh case was identified.

Diana Pokie

Diana Marilva Pokie is a Surinamese politician. She was the assembly member from Brokopondo for the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP) before she was expelled. She returned to the assembly as the Brokopondo member representing the General Liberation and Development Party (ABOP) party. She became the first female vice-chairman of that party in 2019. On 16 July 2020, Pokie became Minister of Land and Forest Management. On 3 August 2021, Pokie was replaced by Dinotha Vorswijk.

Witsanti is an indigenous village of Lokono and Kalina Amerindians in the resort of Zuid in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located on the John F. Kennedyweg near the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport.

Cabendadorp is an indigenous village of Kalina Amerindians in the resort of Zuid in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located on the Afobakaweg south of the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport.

Powakka Village in Para District, Suriname

Powakka is an indigenous village of Lokono Amerindians in the resort of Oost in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located on the road to Carolina which connects to the Afobakaweg to Paramaribo.

Alfonsdorp is a village of indigenous Lokono people in the Albina resort of the Marowijne District of Suriname. The village is located on the East-West Link. The Wanekreek Nature Reserve is located near the village.

Irene Lalji was a Surinamese lawyer and television presenter. She was involved with several publicized legal cases, in the last of which she defended former finance minister Gillmore Hoefdraad.

Cassipora Village in Para District, Suriname

Cassipora is an indigenous village of Lokono Amerindians in the resort of Carolina in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located near the Blaka Watra recreation area. It is also near a 17th-century Jewish village, however only the cemetery remains.

Saskia Natacia Walden is a Surinamese accountant and educator. She served as Minister of Economic Affairs from 16 July 2020 to 18 April 2022.

Gillmore Hoefdraad

Gillmore André Hoefdraad is a Surinamese economist and politician. He was Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname from 2010 until 2015, and Ministry of Finance of Suriname from 2015 to 2020. In January 2020, it was reported that US$100 million was missing from the Central Bank. In July 2021, an Interpol red notice was issued for Hoefdraad. Hoefdraad was sentenced in absentia to 12 years imprisonment on 17 December 2021.
