Maula is a genus of antlions found in Africa, containing the single species, Maula stigmatus, described in 1912. [1] This genus is classified in the tribe Palparini. [2]
The antlions are a group of about 2,000 species of insect in the neuropteran family Myrmeleontidae. They are known for the predatory habits of their larvae, which mostly dig pits to trap passing ants or other prey. In North America, the larvae are sometimes referred to as doodlebugs because of the marks they leave in the sand. The adult insects are less well known due to their relatively short lifespans compared to the larvae. Adults, sometimes known as antlion lacewings, mostly fly at dusk or after dark and may be mistakenly identified as dragonflies or damselflies.
The Microhylidae, commonly known as narrow-mouthed frogs, are a geographically widespread family of frogs. The 683 species are in 63 genera and 11 subfamilies, which is the largest number of genera of any frog family.
The Brachyceran family Vermileonidae is a small family of uncertain affinities and unusual biology. It includes fewer than 80 described species, most of them rare and with restricted distribution, in 10 genera. Historically the vermileonids had been regarded as belonging to the family Rhagionidae, possibly in a subfamily Vermileoninae. Their biology and morphology are so markedly distinct from the main Rhagionidae sensu stricto however, that the placement as a separate family has been widely accepted.
Ascalaphidae is a family of insects in the order Neuroptera, commonly called owlflies; there are some 450 extant species. They are fast-flying crepuscular or diurnal predators of other flying insects, and have large bulging eyes and strongly knobbed antennae. The larvae are ambush predators; some of them make use of self-decoration camouflage.
Mastomys is a genus of rodent in the family Muridae endemic to Africa. It contains eight species:
Ascalaphini is the type subfamily of the neuropteran owlfly family. Most species are found in the tropics. Their characteristic apomorphy, shared with the Ululodini, is the ridge which divides each of their large compound eyes; both groups are thus sometimes known as split-eyed owlflies. The group has been alternatly treated as a subfamily of Ascalaphidae, when the family is treated separate from Myrmelontidae, or as a tribe, when the ascalaphids are treated as a subfamily in an expanded Myrmelontidae.
Palparini is an antlion tribe in the subfamily Palparinae.
Dimarini is an antlion tribe in the family Myrmeleontidae.
Cordulecerus is a genus of owlflies, neuropteran insects in the subfamily Ascalaphinae. Species are found in Central and South America.
Cordulecerus elegans is a species of owlflies, neuropteran insects in the family Ascalaphidae. It is found in South America.
Ululodes floridanus is a species of owlfly in the tribe Ululodini. It is found in North America.
Ululodes is a genus of owlflies in the tribe Ululodini. There are 26 described species in Ululodes.
Ululodes mexicanus is a species of owlfly in the tribe Ululodini. It is found in Central America.
Ululodes quadripunctatus, the four-spotted owlfly, is a species of owlfly in the tribe Ululodini. It is found in Central America and North America.
Ululodes macleayanus is a species of owlfly in the tribe Ululodini. It is found in the Caribbean Sea, Central America, North America, and South America.
Ululodes arizonensis is a species of owlfly in the tribe Ululodini. It is found in Central America and North America.
Ululodes nigripes is a species of owlfly in the tribe Ululodini. It is found in North America.
Ululodes bicolor is a species of owlfly in the tribe Ululodini. It is found in Central America and North America.
Ascalaphus is a genus of owlfly belonging to the tribe Ascalaphini. The species of this genus are found in Africa and Asia.
Ululodinae is a subfamily or tribe of owlflies. Both they and the Ascalaphinae are sometimes known as split-eyed owlflies due to the characteristic ridge that bisects their compound eyes.
