The Medium Support Vehicle System (MSVS) is a designation for two types of medium capacity logistics trucks used by the Canadian Army: the Standard Military Pattern (SMP) for use by the regular forces and for overseas deployments, and the Militarized Commercial Off-The-Shelf (MilCOTS) trucks for use by the Army Reserve and for domestic purposes. The two MSVS designs were procured to replace the army's fleet of "Medium Logistics Vehicle, Wheeled" (MLVW) trucks built by Bombardier Inc. in 1982-83. [1]
The Canadian Army's MLVW trucks were delivered beginning in 1982, and had an anticipated 15-year lifespan. [2] However, by the turn of the century the MLVW fleet still had not been replaced. The Department of National Defence (DND) and Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) officially identified a replacement project in October 2000, but approval to proceed with procurement did not come until 2003, when then-defence minister John McCallum approved a DND/CAF plan to sole source 1,500 trucks from the United States Army, who were in the midst of their own procurement program for approximately 83,000 units. The plan to pursue the option from the US Army was expected to save approximately $300 million (CAD) versus procuring an entirely new truck of their own, but federal government bureaucrats and domestic industry strongly opposed the plan and government support fell through. By January 2004 the DND warned that the MLVWs were in such poor condition that they could catastrophically fail without warning. [4] The trucks' poor condition resulted in annual operating costs of $49,500 per truck per 10 000 km, including $38,900 for spare parts alone. Extrapolated over the following ten years it was expected that keeping the MLVWs for another decade would cost over $1 billion. [5] The Liberal government under Prime Minister Paul Martin pledged $2.5 billion in their 2005 defence budget toward a new generation of medium-sized logistics trucks, but no definitive spending announcement had been made by the 2006 Canadian federal election. After the Conservative government of Stephen Harper was elected their first budget included the MSVS program, which would see $1.1 billion spent on five phases of procurement: [2] [6]
The contract for MSVS MilCOTS trucks was awarded to Navistar Defense in January 2009. [7] They provided 1,300 Navistar 7400 trucks based on the civilian International WorkStar, in six different configurations: [8]

The MSVS SMP contract was awarded on June 11, 2015 [6] to Mack Defense, who provided trucks based on the Renault Kerax (Mack is a subsidiary of the Volvo Group, which also owns Renault Trucks). They feature four driven axles with a two-speed ZF VG2000-300 transfer case for eight-wheel drive. [9] The MSVS SMP has both armored and unarmored cab variants and five main configurations:
The Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) is an eight-wheel drive, diesel-powered, 10-short-ton (9,100 kg) tactical truck. The M977 HEMTT first entered service in 1982 with the United States Army as a replacement for the M520 Goer, and since that date has remained in production for the U.S. Army and other nations. By Q2 2021, around 35,800 HEMTTs in various configurations had been produced by Oshkosh Defense through new-build contracts and around 14,000 of these had been re-manufactured. Current variants have the A4 suffix.

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) is a U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and Special Operations Command program to partially replace the Humvee fleet with a family of more survivable vehicles having a greater payload. Early studies for the JLTV program were approved in 2006. The JLTV program incorporates lessons learned from the earlier Future Tactical Truck Systems program and other associated efforts.
The International MXT-MV is an infantry mobility vehicle produced by Navistar Defense, a subsidiary of Navistar International, which is the owner of the International brand of vehicles. Introduced in 2006 and developed in parallel with the civilian International MXT, the MXT-MV is extensively modified for military duty compared to its civilian counterpart. It is transportable by the Lockheed C-130 Hercules military aircraft.

The Future Tactical Truck System (FTTS) was a United States Armed Forces program for which the Operational Requirements Document was drawn up during 2003. FTTS was a proposed two vehicle modular family that was to replace the AM General High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV), Oshkosh M977 Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT), Palletized Load System (PLS), and all remaining M35, M809 and M939 series of 2.5 and 5 ton trucks. The FTTS-UV was to replace the HMMWV, while the FTTS-MSV was to replace all other types.
The Navistar 7000 series is a line of military heavy lift vehicles based on Navistar International's WorkStar truck chassis, and produced by Navistar Defense. The truck is available in a variety of wheel and engine configurations.
The Renault Kerax is a medium- and heavy-duty truck manufactured by Renault Trucks, aimed at the construction industry, and is available as a rigid body or tractor configuration. It was launched in 1997, and underwent a full upgrade in 2006. Production of the Kerax ended in 2013, when it was replaced by the C and K range which are powered by Euro VI engines. Military versions, however, are still available.
The Hawkei is a light four-wheel-drive protected mobility vehicle originally designed to meet an Australian Defence Force (ADF) requirement for a light armoured patrol vehicle to replace some of its Land Rover Perentie variants. The Hawkei is a highly mobile, highly protected, 7-tonne vehicle, with inbuilt systems to allow it to be used as a fighting platform. It has been developed with Vehicle Electronic Architecture to be mission system ready. It is intended to undertake a range of mission profiles, including troop movement, command and control, electronic warfare, liaison, surveillance and reconnaissance. Prime contractors include: Thales Australia, Boeing Australia, Plasan (Israel) and PAC Group. In October 2015, the Australian Government announced the purchase of 1,100 Hawkei vehicles and more than 1,000 companion trailers from Thales Australia.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Act, officially designated as Republic Act No. 7898, was a Philippine law that was enacted on February 23, 1995, by President Fidel V. Ramos. It was aimed to modernize all branches of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) such as the Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy, and the Philippine Army. The law was intended to last for 15 years with an initial budget of 50 billion pesos for the first five years, but the funding was stopped due to the 1997 Asian financial crisis. After the financial crisis, the funding for the AFP modernization was halted and later neglected by successive administrations until the law expired in 2010.
The Leyland 4-tonne truck was produced by Leyland Trucks in Lancashire. It was developed for the British Army and won the competition to replace a fleet of older Bedford M-type 4-tonne trucks. It shares some key components with the commercial 45 Series light truck. Deliveries to the British Army started in 1990. The official British Army Out of Service Date for this truck was the end of 2014, but around 650 were retained. Small numbers were exported.
The HX family are a range of purpose-designed tactical military trucks manufactured by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV). The HX range was disclosed in 2003, and the first order was placed in 2004. The HX range replaced the earlier FX and LX ranges in production. The HX2 range, which currently complements the original HX range, was announced in 2012. The first HX2 range trucks were delivered in April 2016. The HX and HX2 ranges originally complemented the SX range, but as of 2019 they had replaced the SX range as the type was no longer produced. The HX3 range was announced in May 2021, with series production scheduled for 2024.
Traton SE, known as the Traton Group, is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group and one of the world's largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, with its MAN, Scania, Navistar, and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus brands. The company also has digital services branded as RIO. In 2020, the group sold around 190,200 vehicles. The range of products includes light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks, as well as vans and buses. As of December 31, 2020, Traton employed around 82,600 people in its commercial vehicle brands.
The LAV 6, sometimes written as LAV 6.0 or LAV VI, is the fourth generation of LAV, and is based on the LAV III. The first vehicles were delivered in 2013 and after testing entered service in 2016. The Canadian Army plans to replace its entire LAV fleet of various LAV II and LAV III variants with the LAV 6. The vehicle is being acquired in two main variants: a fighting vehicle equipped with the 25mm cannon seen on the LAV II and LAV III, and a support variant labelled the Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV).
