1 On 4 November 1998, the One Nation member for Mulgrave, Charles Rappolt, resigned. Labor candidate Warren Pitt, who had represented Mulgrave between 1989 and 1995, won the resulting by-election on 5 December 1998.
2 One Nation members Shaun Nelson, Dorothy Pratt and Ken Turner left the party on 2 February 1999, and served out the remainder of their terms as independents.
3 One Nation members John Kingston and Jeff Knuth left the party on 23 February 1999. Kingston served out his term as an independent. Knuth sat as an independent until 5 August 1999, when he attempted to found his own party, the Country Party QLD.
4 The five remaining One Nation members, Harry Black, David Dalgleish, Bill Feldman, Jack Paff and Peter Prenzler, abandoned the party on 14 December 1999, founding their own alternative, the City Country Alliance. The five were later joined by prior colleague Knuth on 18 February 2000, once his own new party began to founder.
5 On 14 December 1999, the Labor member for Bundamba, Bob Gibbs, resigned. Labor candidate Jo-Ann Miller won the resulting by-election on 5 February 2000.
6 On 9 January 2000, the Labor member for Woodridge, Bill D'Arcy, resigned. Labor candidate Mike Kaiser won the resulting by-election on 5 February 2000. Kaiser left the Labor Party on 10 January 2001 as a consequence of the Shepherdson Inquiry's investigation of his role in an electoral rorting scandal. He served out his term as an independent and did not contest the 2001 election.
7 The member for Capalaba, Jim Elder, was elected as a Labor member and served as Deputy Premier under Peter Beattie, but left the party on 30 November 2000 following revelations from the Shepherdson Inquiry about his alleged behaviour. He served out the final months of his term as an independent and did not contest the 2001 election.
8 The member for Springwood, Grant Musgrove, was elected as a Labor member, but was forced to leave the party on 4 December 2000. He also served out the remainder of his term as an independent and did not contest the 2001 election.

The 1998 Australian federal election was held to determine the members of the 39th Parliament of Australia. It was held on 3 October 1998. All 148 seats of the House of Representatives and 40 seats of the 76-seat Senate were up for election. The incumbent centre-right Liberal/National Coalition government led by Prime Minister John Howard of the Liberal Party and coalition partner Tim Fischer of the National Party defeated the centre-left Australian Labor Party opposition led by Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, despite losing the nationwide popular and two-party preferred vote. However, the Australian Labor Party gained seats from the previous election.

An election was held in the Australian state of Queensland on 17 February 2001 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The result of the election was the return of the Labor Party (ALP) government of Premier Peter Beattie, with an increased majority in a landslide. Labor won 66 seats, easily the most it has ever won in Queensland and one of Labor's best-ever results nationwide. There was a 10.07% swing towards Labor, while One Nation suffered a 13.98% swing against it, losing eight seats.

The current Member of Parliament is Meaghan Scanlon of the Labor Party. It is currently the only Labor-held seat on the Gold Coast.

Shaun Christopher Nelson is an Australian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1998 to 2001, representing the electorate of Tablelands. He was elected as one of 11 MPs of the One Nation Party at the 1998 state election, before resigning from the party to sit as an independent in February 1999. He served out the remainder of his term before being defeated by One Nation candidate Rosa Lee Long at the 2001 election. He currently serves as a Maritime Warfare Officer in the Royal Australian Navy.

He has been a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2004, representing three successive seats: Charters Towers (2004–2009), Dalrymple (2009–2017) and Hill (2017–present). He has variously represented the National Party (2004–08), the Liberal National Party (2008–11) and Katter's Australian Party (2011–present).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Beattie ministry</span>

The Beattie Ministry was a Ministry of the Government of Queensland, led by Labor Premier Peter Beattie. It commenced on 26 June 1998, thirteen days after the Borbidge Ministry, led by Premier Rob Borbidge of the National Party, was defeated at the 1998 election. It was followed by the Bligh Ministry upon Beattie's retirement as Premier on 13 September 2007.

A by-election was held in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland seat of Mulgrave on 5 December 1998. It was triggered by the resignation of sitting One Nation member Charles Rappolt.

A by-election was held in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland seat of Woodridge on 5 February 2000. It was triggered by the resignation of sitting Labor member Bill D'Arcy. It was held concurrently with the Bundamba state by-election.

James Peter Elder is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1989 to 2001, representing Manly until 1992 and Capalaba thereafter. Originally elected as a Labor member and serving as Deputy Premier in the Beattie Government, Elder resigned from the party on 30 November 2000.
