The Metropolitan Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.The 53-mile line runs from Washington, D.C., northwest to Weverton, Maryland, along the former Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. [1] [2]
At its southeast end, north of Washington Union Station, the Metropolitan Subdivision meets the Capital Subdivision (formerly called the B&O Washington Branch) and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. It meets the Old Main Line Subdivision at Point of Rocks, Maryland. At its northwest end in Weverton, the line joins the Cumberland Subdivision.
MARC Train's Brunswick Line uses the entire subdivision, as does Amtrak's Capitol Limited . The Red Line of the Washington Metro shares right-of-way with the subdivision along two separate stretches in Maryland and D.C.: from the junction with the Capital Subdivision to north of Silver Spring, and from south of Twinbrook to the end of the Red Line at Shady Grove.
Interest in building a rail line from Washington to points west was initially spurred by businessmen in Washington and Montgomery County, Maryland. [3] In 1853, they obtained a corporate charter from the Maryland General Assembly to form the Metropolitan Railroad. [4] The proposed line would run from Washington to the vicinity of Frederick, Maryland, where it would connect with the B&O main line, and continue to Hagerstown, Maryland. The company conducted some initial land surveys, but had difficulty raising funds and went bankrupt in 1863.[ citation needed ]
Two years later, the expired charter was taken over by the B&O, which had not previously been interested in building a new route out of Washington. Construction began in 1866 along a slightly different route, connecting with the main line at Point of Rocks, Maryland. [5] : 164
The line opened on April 30, 1873, as the B&O's Metropolitan Branch. [6] : 7 [7] The new line became the B&O's main passenger route to Washington, with the Old Main Line, from Point of Rocks to Relay, reduced to secondary status. Some through freight trains were also rerouted to the new line. [8]
Increasing congestion led the B&O to start adding double track portions to the line in 1886. The Washington-to-Gaithersburg section was double-tracked by 1893. [5] : 166 During the peak years of passenger operation—1893 to the 1920s—the line saw 18 trains per day, with as many as 28 stops along the Met Branch. [6] : 7
Double-tracking was completed on the remainder of the branch in 1928. Several distinctive passenger stations, designed by architect Ephraim Francis Baldwin, were constructed along the line. Original stations still stand in the Maryland communities of Rockville (moved away from the tracks in 1981), Kensington, Gaithersburg, Dickerson, and Point of Rocks. [6] : 6–10
In 1906, a rear collision at Terra Cotta station killed 53 people.
On February 16, 1996, the collision of two trains in Silver Spring killed three crew members and eight passengers and injured a total of 26 people.
The Met Branch's Georgetown Branch ran from a junction north of the Silver Spring station in a broad 11-mile arc to the Georgetown area of Washington, D.C. The branch was built in two phases. The first, completed in 1892, ran from the junction along the northern bank of Coquelin Run to a new extension of Connecticut Avenue in the nascent development of Chevy Chase. The second, completed in 1910, completed the crescent to Georgetown. [9]
The line was originally intended to be a B&O extension that would cross the Potomac River near the Chain Bridge, but in 1904, the B&O reached an agreement with the Pennsylvania Railroad to use the Long Bridge over the Potomac, nearly six miles downstream. So the B&O used the Georgetown Branch as a spur to serve local industries in Silver Spring, Chevy Chase, and Bethesda in Maryland; and Georgetown. [6] : 27–29 Engineering features of the branch included the Rock Creek Trestle in Chevy Chase, the Dalecarlia Tunnel, and a through-truss bridge over the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. CSX ran its last train on the Georgetown Branch in 1985 after a bridge in Montgomery County was found to have structural problems, and launched the abandonment process the year after 75 feet of track was damaged in the 1985 Election Day floods.[ citation needed ]
The right-of-way from Bethesda to Georgetown was turned into a hike-and-bike trail that opened in late 1996 as the Capital Crescent Trail. The Bethesda-to-Silver Spring portion of the spur was opened in 1997 as an interim rail-trail called the Georgetown Branch Trail, and the two trails were connected in 1998. The railyard in Georgetown was developed into the Washington Harbour buildings and the Georgetown Waterfront Park.
In 2017, construction began on the Purple Line, which will use the Bethesda-to-Silver Spring portion of the spur as part of a route that continues on to New Carrollton, Maryland. The Georgetown Branch Trail is to be rebuilt alongside the new tracks, which is projected for completion sometime in 2027. [10]
Besides the right-of-way and bridges, remnants include the Dalecarlia Tunnel, the Air Rights Tunnel, rail sidings along the right-of-way near River Road and the enlarged arch of the Aqueduct Bridge abutment.
Through mergers, the line became part of the CSX system in 1987. CSX organized its Metropolitan Subdivision as a combination of the original B&O Met Branch plus a section of the B&O original main line northwest of Point of Rocks, which had opened in 1834. The entire subdivision is signaled for bi-directional running. There is a spur in Maryland that serves the Dickerson Generating Station (formerly owned by the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO)) (BA 37) at Dickerson and a trash-transfer facility spur in Derwood (BA 19.6). The interlockings on the line are (east to west): F Tower (BAA 37.2), QN Tower (BA 2.1), Georgetown Jct (BA 8.3), Montrose (BA 15), Derwood (BA 19.6), Clopper (BA 24.4), Buck Lodge (BA 30), Dickerson (BA 35.5) , PEPCO (BA 37), Tuscarora (BA 39.3), East Rocks (BA 42.6), Point of Rocks (BA 42.8), East Brunswick (BA 73.1), WB Tower (75.6), and Weverton (78.8). The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States. It operated as B&O from 1830 until 1987, when it was merged into the Chessie System; its lines are today controlled by CSX Transportation.
Point of Rocks is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Frederick County, Maryland. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,466.
U.S. Route 340 is a spur route of US 40, and runs from Greenville, Virginia, to Frederick, Maryland. In Virginia, it runs north–south, parallel and east of US 11, from US 11 north of Greenville via Waynesboro, Grottoes, Elkton, Luray, Front Royal, and Berryville to the West Virginia state line. A short separate piece crosses northern Loudoun County on its way from West Virginia to Maryland.
The Capital Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Maryland and the District of Columbia. The Baltimore and Potomac Railroad (B&P) operated from Baltimore, Maryland, southwest to Washington, D.C., from 1872 to 1902. Owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad, it was the second railroad company to connect the nation's capital to the Northeastern U.S., and competed with the older Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
The Capital Crescent Trail (CCT) is a 7.04-mile (11.33 km), shared-use rail trail that runs from Georgetown in Washington, D.C., to Bethesda, Maryland. An extension of the trail from Bethesda to Silver Spring along a route formerly known as the Georgetown Branch Trail is being built as part of the Purple Line light rail project.
The Dalecarlia Tunnel in Brookmont, Maryland, near Washington, D.C., is a former railroad tunnel that presently carries the Capital Crescent Trail underneath MacArthur Boulevard and the Washington Aqueduct.
The CSX Susquehanna River Bridge is a railroad bridge that carries CSX's Philadelphia Subdivision across the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Perryville, Maryland, via Garrett Island. It was built in 1907–1910 by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) on the same alignment as an 1886 B&O bridge. Like its predecessor, it was the longest continuous bridge on the B&O system.
The Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge across the Little Patuxent River at Savage, Maryland, is one of the oldest standing iron railroad bridges in the United States and the sole surviving example of a revolutionary design in the history of American bridge engineering. The 160-foot (48.8 m) double-span was built in 1852 at an unknown location on the main line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. It was moved 35 years later to its present location, where it replaced the very first Bollman bridge. Today, it carries the Savage Mill Trail.
Wendel Bollman was an American self-taught civil engineer, best known for his iron railway bridges. Only one of his patented "Bollman truss" bridges survives, the Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge in Savage, Maryland. The Wells Creek Bollman Bridge near Meyersdale, Pennsylvania is also standing, although that bridge uses the Warren truss system.
Maryland Route 410 (MD 410) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland and known for most of its length as East–West Highway. The highway runs east to west for 13.92 miles (22.40 km) from MD 355 in Bethesda east to Pennsy Drive in Landover Hills. MD 410 serves as a major east–west commuter route through the inner northern suburbs of Washington, D.C., connecting the commercial districts of Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Hyattsville. In addition, the highway serves the industrial area of Landover Hills and the residential suburbs of Chevy Chase, Takoma Park, Chillum, Riverdale, and East Riverdale. The road also connects many of the arterial highways and freeways that head out of Washington. Additionally, it provides a highway connection to transit and commercial hubs centered around Washington Metro subway stations in Bethesda, Takoma Park, Hyattsville, Silver Spring, and New Carrollton–the latter two of which provide additional connections to MARC and Amtrak trains.
The Old Main Line Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Maryland. The line runs from Relay west to Point of Rocks, and was once the main line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, one of the oldest rail lines in the United States. At its east end, it has junctions with the Capital Subdivision and the Baltimore Terminal Subdivision; its west end has a junction with the Metropolitan Subdivision.
Maryland Route 28 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs 37.38 miles (60.16 km) from U.S. Route 15 in Point of Rocks east to MD 182 in Norwood. The western portion of MD 28 is a rural highway connecting several villages in southern Frederick County and western Montgomery County. By contrast, the eastern portion of the state highway is a major east–west commuter route, particularly within Gaithersburg and Rockville.

Weverton is an unincorporated community hamlet located in the southern tip of Washington County, Maryland, United States, near the north shore of the Potomac River. Its population is about 500. Weverton is located at the intersection of MD Route 67 and U.S. Route 340. The nearest incorporated communities are Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and Brunswick. Weverton's approximate elevation is 410 feet (120 m) above sea level.
The Pope's Creek Subdivision is a CSX Transportation railroad line in Maryland, running from Bowie to the Morgantown Generating Station in Morgantown, Maryland. The Herbert Subdivision to the Chalk Point Generating Station connects to it at Brandywine and the Indian Head-White Plains railroad used to connect to it at White Plains. Its name comes from Pope's Creek in Newburg, MD to where it originally ran.
Kensington is a passenger railroad station at 10417 Howard Avenue in Kensington, Maryland, United States. Opened by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) in 1891, the Kensington station is today served by MARC Train's Brunswick Line, which makes 15 weekday scheduled stops at Kensington, plus one flag stop on Fridays.
The B & O Railroad Potomac River Crossing is a 15-acre (6.1 ha) historic site where a set of railroad bridges, originally built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, span the Potomac River between Sandy Hook, Maryland and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 14, 1978, for its significance in commerce, engineering, industry, invention, and transportation.
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Bridge, Antietam Creek was a timber trestle bridge near Keedysville, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It carried the Washington County branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, later part of CSX Transportation, over the ravine formed by the Antietam Creek northwest of Keedysville. The wooden bridge, constructed about 1867, was approximately 400 feet (120 m) in length and was supported by a series of timber bents resting on concrete sills. CSX abandoned the railroad line in the late 1970s or 1980s.
The Alexandria Extension is a short rail line in Washington, D.C. and Prince George's County, Maryland. Its northern portion connects the Capital Subdivision to the RF&P Subdivision, allowing freight trains to avoid Downtown Washington. Its southern portion, the Shepherd Industrial Spur, extends south to Shepherds Landing, directly across the Potomac River from Alexandria, Virginia; service on this portion ended in 2001.
