Michael F. Bianco (born May 3, 1967) is an American baseball coach and former catcher, who is the current head baseball coach of the Ole Miss Rebels. He played college baseball at Indian River Community College before transferring to LSU where he played for coach Skip Bertman from 1988 to 1989.

Contents

Bianco served as the head coach of the McNeese State Cowboys (1998–2000) before being named head coach at Ole Miss. [1] He has led the Rebels to two College World Series appearances (2014 and 2022), with Ole Miss winning their first national championship in 2022.

Playing career

Bianco attended Seminole High School in Seminole, Florida [2] where following the conclusion of a senior year, he was drafted in the 13th round of the 1985 Major League Baseball draft by the Boston Red Sox. [3] Bianco played two seasons at Indian River Community College in Florida before transferring to LSU from 1988 to 1989. [4] He was the Tigers' starting catcher and team captain on the 1989 team that finished third at the College World Series.

Coaching career

On June 8, 2000, Bianco was named the head baseball coach of Ole Miss. During his tenure, Ole Miss has hosted nine NCAA baseball regionals and three NCAA baseball Super Regionals. The program has won four SEC Western Division Championships under his guidance (2005, 2009, 2014, 2018), the 2006 SEC Baseball Tournament, the 2018 SEC Baseball Tournament, the 2009 Southeastern Conference Co-championship, and eight NCAA regional championships (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2014, 2019, 2021, 2022). In 2005, 2006, and 2009, his teams hosted Super Regionals.

Ole Miss reached the College World Series for the first time under Bianco in 2014, advancing to the semifinals. Eight years later at the 2022 College World Series, Bianco and the Rebels won their first national championship with a two-game sweep of Oklahoma.

The 1960 Ole Miss Rebels football team represented the University of Mississippi during the 1960 NCAA University Division football season. In their fourteenth season under head coach Johnny Vaught, the Rebels compiled a 10–0–1 record and won their fourth Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship. Their only blemish was a 6–6 tie against LSU. Mississippi was the only major-conference team in the nation that finished the season undefeated on the field.

Mitch Gaspard is an American college baseball coach and former second baseman. He is the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisiana Tech University. Gaspard played college baseball at Louisiana State University from 1984 to 1985 before transferring to the University of Houston where he played from 1986 to 1987. He is the former head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team. Gaspard agreed to a 3-year contract on September 1, 2009, starting in 2010. The 2010 season was Gaspard's first season as the head coach of the Crimson Tide. He had been on the Alabama coaching staff for ten years, and was given the head coaching position when Jim Wells retired. He resigned from Alabama on May 30, 2016.

The 2013 LSU Tigers baseball team represents Louisiana State University in the NCAA Division I baseball season of 2013. The Tigers played their home games in the new Alex Box Stadium, which opened in 2009. On May 17, 2013, the playing field at Alex Box Stadium was designated Skip Bertman Field, in honor of the LSU coach with the most wins in the program's history. At the end of the game against Ole Miss, the program celebrated the best regular season record in its history with 48 wins.

They compete in the Southeastern Conference's Western Division, and won their division in 2014.

The 2022 Ole Miss Rebels baseball team represented the University of Mississippi in the 2022 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Rebels played their home games at Swayze Field. In 2022, the Rebels went from the last team into the field of 64 NCAA tournament to the National Champions. The Rebels began their post-season with a loss in the SEC Tournament to Vanderbilt before they got hot. As the 3 seed in the Miami regional, the Rebels demolished the field, defeating Arizona, the host team Miami, and Arizona again to head to a Super Regional. In the Super Regionals, the Rebels traveled to Hattiesburg, MS where Southern Mississippi played host. In front of record crowds, Ole Miss outscored Southern Miss 15-0 in a two-game routing to head to Omaha for the first time since 2014. In Omaha, the Rebels remained hot, taking down Auburn and SEC foe Arkansas, before losing its first postseason game to Arkansas in a potential elimination game for the Razorbacks. In game three of the series against Arkansas, Rebel pitcher Dylan DeLucia threw a complete-game shutout to push the Rebels to their first College World Series championship game in program history. The Rebels ran through Oklahoma in two games to win the 2022 College World Series and complete their last-to-first run. The team was featured in the 2022 documentary, Belief: The Season Ole Miss Baseball.
