Michael Elias (born December 28,1982) is an American baseball executive. He is the executive vice president and general manager for the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Elias graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria,Virginia, [1] where he was born. [2] He attended Yale University,graduating in 2006. [3] He played college baseball for the Yale Bulldogs as a pitcher. [4] After his sophomore season,Elias required surgery to repair a torn labrum. [5]
After graduating from Yale,Elias became a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2007. [3] When the Houston Astros hired Jeff Luhnow from the Cardinals as their general manager in 2011,Elias went to Houston with him as special assistant to the GM before being hired as Scouting Director in August 2012. [6] In 2016,after David Stearns was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers as their general manager,the Astros promoted Elias to fill Stearns' role as assistant general manager. He was given oversight of player development and minor league operations. [7]
On November 16,2018,the Baltimore Orioles hired Elias as their general manager and executive vice president. [3] Elias hired Sig Mejdal from the Astros as his assistant general manager to bring more extensive analytics to the Orioles. [8]

He previously served as the general manager of four MLB teams:the Toronto Blue Jays (1978–1994),Baltimore Orioles (1996–1998),Seattle Mariners (2000–2003),and Philadelphia Phillies (2006–2008). He guided the Blue Jays to World Series championships in 1992 and 1993,and later with the Phillies in 2008.
James Leroy Thomas was an American first baseman and right fielder,coach and front-office executive in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played for six teams from 1961 to 1968,most notably the Los Angeles Angels,then went on to a successful tenure as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Traded to the Angels one month after the expansion franchise began play in 1961,he tied for third in Rookie of the Year voting after batting .285 with 24 home runs and 70 runs batted in (RBI),primarily playing in the outfield. The following year,he was named to the American League (AL) All-Star team after shifting to first base,and appeared in both All-Star games played that year as a pinch hitter and late-inning defensive replacement. He finished the year with career highs in batting (.290),home runs (26) and RBI (104),but a sharp decline in 1963 led to his being traded to the Boston Red Sox in mid-1964,the first of four trades before the 1968 season.
