Each year the Mississippi Mr. Basketball award is given to the best high school boys basketball player in the state of Mississippi by The Clarion-Ledger. [1]

After his professional football retirement Poole also served briefly as head coach of the Ole Miss basketball team before becoming a career position coach for Johnny Vaught and the Ole Miss football team, which won two national titles during his tenure.

McNeil "Doby" Bartling Jr. was an American football player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as head football coach at Vanderbilt University from 1944 to 1945 and at Millsaps College from 1946 to 1950, compiling a career college football record of 24–18–2. Bartling was also the head basketball coach at Millsaps from 1946 to 1951, tallying a mark of 25–63, and the head baseball coach at the school from 1947 to 1949, amassing a record of 15–31. He played football as a quarterback at the University of Mississippi. Bartling came to Vanderbilt in 1943 as an assistant coach after coaching at Meridian High School in Meridian, Mississippi.

The 2014–15 Mississippi State Bulldogs basketball team represented Mississippi State University in the 2014–15 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team's head coach was Rick Ray, in his third season at Mississippi State. The team played their home games at the Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Mississippi as a member of the Southeastern Conference. They finished the season 13–19, 6–12 in SEC play to finish in a tie for 11th place. They lost in the first round of the SEC tournament to Auburn.

The Howell Trophy or Cellular South Howell Trophy or C Spire Howell Trophy is an award given annually to the best men's college basketball player in the state of Mississippi by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. It is open to players from all four-year colleges in Mississippi, although it has only been won by a non-Division I player once. The trophy is named after former Mississippi State star Bailey Howell.
