The North Eastern Province is one of the former provinces of Kenya. It had a land area of 127,358.5 km2, with its capital at Garissa. The North Eastern Province was carved out of the then Northern Frontier District (NFD) prior to independence.

The county has six constituencies: Wajir South, Tarbaj, Wajir North, Wajir West, Wajir East, and Eldas.
Abdikadir Hussein Mohamed is a Kenyan politician. As a member of Safina, Mohamed was elected to represent the Mandera Central Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya in the 2007 Kenyan parliamentary election, defeating the incumbent Billow Kerrow.

In 1998, the US embassy was bombed in Nairobi, as was the Israeli-owned Paradise hotel in 2002 in Mombasa. In 2013, the Somali jihadist group al-Shabaab killed 67 people at Nairobi's Westgate Shopping Mall. There have also been many other attacks.
The petroleum industry in Kenya is relatively new in terms of mining and exploration. British firm Tullow Oil began operations in Kenya in 2010 after signing agreements with Africa Oil and Centric Energy, purchasing a 50% interest in five onshore licences. In 2012, the Ngamia-1 exploration well was a success and has since been followed by further exploration in the South Lokichar Basin.

On 2 April 2015, gunmen stormed the Garissa University College in Garissa, Kenya, killing 148 people, and injuring at least 79. The militant groups Al-Qaeda and Al-Shabaab, which the gunmen claimed to belong to, took responsibility for the attack. The gunmen took over 700 students hostage, freeing Muslims and killing those who identified as Christians. The siege ended the same day, when all four of the attackers were killed. Five men were later arrested in connection with the attack, and a bounty was placed for the arrest of a suspected organizer.

Billow Kerrow is a Kenyan politician from Mandera County. He served as a Member of Parliament for Mandera Central Constituency from 2002 to 2007 and as the first senator from Mandera County from 2013 to 2017. Kerrow also served as KANU's shadow finance minister in the ninth parliament, and as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance, Commerce and Budget in the Senate. In February 2016, Kerrow replaced Senator Kipchumba Murkomen as a member of the Pan-African Parliament. In 2017, Billow Kerrow decided to retire from politics after 15 years saying it is "an appropriate time to re-evaluate and move on".
