The Mount Manipur Memorial is a memorial site in the Mount Manipur (formerly known as Mount Harriet) of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. [15] [16] [17] [18] Spanning over an area of more than 45000 sq ft, the memorial site is dedicated to the Manipuri freedom fighters and the martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur war. In the year 2022, the memorial site won the "International Muse Design Award 2022", through the designs of the "Huidrom Design Studios" from Manipur. [19] [20] [21] [22]

History

When the Anglo-Manipur War ended in the year 1891, 23 Manipuri warriors were exiled to the British penal colony in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, including Meitei King Kulachandra Dhwaja Singh, the Maharajah of Manipur. At the time of the exile, the Cellular Jail (Kalapani) was about to be built in the island. So, Kulachandra Singh and other 22 freedom fighters were imprisoned on the Mount Manipur, in the South Andaman district. [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] [28]

Prior to the construction of the Mount Manipur Memorial site on the Mount Manipur, the Government of Manipur talked to the government authorities of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to provide a piece of land to construct the memorial site for the Manipuri warriors. In the year 2019, the A&N authorities agreed to provide a piece of land near the Cellular Jail. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the process of the construction got delayed. The Manipur Government was given help by the Central Government of India in the construction of the memorial site. [29] [30] [31] [32] [33] [34]

Features

The Mount Manipur Memorial site displays and houses museum, royal sword monument, galleries, outdoor auditorium, cafeteria and gardens. [35] [36] [37] [38]

Sword monument

The "sword monument" in the Mount Manipur Memorial is a monument to commemorate the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and the martyrs in the Anglo-Manipur War. It is associated with a gallery specifically dedicated to Meitei King Kulachandra Dhaja Singh, the Maharajah of Manipur Kingdom and 22 Manipuri freedom fighters, who were exiled to the Mount Manipur from their homeland Manipur after the end of the war. Awards and honours

The Mount Manipur Memorial was designed by the Manipur-based "Huidrom Design Studios" led by designer Suresh Huidrom, Nevia Laishram as lead architect, Ribash Akoijam as 3D visual architect, Galaxy Pungyambam as civil engineer and Danny Ahongsangbam as assistant architect. [43] It was bestowed the "International Muse Design Award 2022" in the Architectural Concept Design Competition. Afterwards, the memorial site has drawn attention to the global arena. [44] Posting on the Twitter, the "Huidrom Design Studio" wrote as follows:

"Huidrom Design Studios is once again excited and honoured to receive the prestigious International Muse Design Award 2022 (Season2) as a GOLD WINNER for the Project Mount Manipur Memorial (Architectural Concept Design Competition). We are so blessed by the opportunity given to us by the Government of Manipur. Our special thanks to honourable CM Manipur for his incredible Vision and Ideas and for believing in us. This project design is indeed an organic design that not only the entire world recognized but also helps us leave footprints in the field of design & architecture today." [45]

Notably, in the previous year 2021, the same studio won the Silver Medal in Muse Design Awards 2021 for the project Imphal Peace Museum. [46] Manipur's Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh posted on Twitter showing appreciations and encouragement to the architecture and the interior designing studio that brought global fame to Manipur and India, as follows:

"Proud moment for our homegrown Architecture & Interior designing firm Huidrom Design Studio on winning the Silver Medal in Muse Design Awards 2021 for the project ‘Imphal Peace Museum.’ Participants from over 100 countries were competing for the Muse Design Award 2021, New York." [47]

The Cinema of Manipur is the film industry based in Manipur, India. It includes not only Meitei language movies but all the films made in different languages of the different communities in Manipur. The Manipuri film industry was born when Matamgi Manipur by Debkumar Bose was released on 9 April 1972. From Aribam Syam Sharma's Paokhum Ama, the first colour Manipuri film (1983), M.A Singh's Langlen Thadoi, the first full-length colour Manipuri film (1984), Oken Amakcham's Lammei, the first Manipuri digital film (2002), to Priyakanta Laishram's Oneness (film), the first Manipuri gay-themed film (2023), Manipuri cinema, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, has grown in both its form and culture.

<i>Luhongbagi Ahing</i> 2011 Indian film

Lugongbagi Ahing is a 2011 Indian Meitei language film directed by Bijgupta Laishram and produced by T. Baruni Devi, under the banner of Baruni Films. The film features Gokul Athokpam, Bala Hijam and Ashok Seleibam in the lead roles. The film was released at Classic Hotel, Imphal on 3 June 2011. It is a 2011 blockbuster film.

Romi Meitei is an Indian film director and lyricist who works in Manipuri films. He is a recipient of several awards at several film festivals organised in India and abroad and has directed movies for around two decades. Thoiba Thoibi, Inga Nonglakta, Manithoiba, Natephamda Tero, Chumthang Makhong, Mikithi and Dharmagi Mingda Imagidamak are some of the well-known movies he directed.

<i>Chatledo Eidi</i> 2000 Indian film

Chatledo Eidi is a 2000 Indian Meitei language film directed and produced by Makhonmani Mongsaba under the banner of Sangai Films. It is based on the famous radio play Chatledo Eidi Meigee Ching Puduna by Moirangthem Inao. The film was selected for Indian Panorama of the 32nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2001. The movie won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Manipuri at the 48th National Film Awards.

Oken Amakcham is an Indian film director, music director and actor who works in Manipuri films. He started his career in theatre and performing arts. He is a recipient of the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Manipuri for the movie Mayophygee Macha at the 42nd National Film Awards. In 2002, he directed Lammei which marked the beginning of a digital era in Manipuri cinema. He took the role of music director in many of his movies. Cheina, Tellanga Mamei, Nungshithel are some of his notable films. He had been a jury member of 58th National Film Awards.

Bishesh Huirem is an Indian actress and model from the Meitei ethnicity of Manipur. She is best known for being the first Indian to represent India at the Miss International Queen for Transgender 2016 organised in Pattaya, Thailand. She is the first Indian transgender to be appointed as a state icon for the parliamentary polls in the Lok Sabha elections. She is the first transgender to win the "Best Actor Award" in the 14th Manipur State Film Awards, 2022. It's Not My Choice directed by Priyakanta Laishram, Apaiba Leichil directed by Bobby Wahengbam are some of her notable films.

Miss Manipur or Miss Manipur Queen is an annual beauty pageant that is run by the Manipur based Miss Manipur Committee (MMC). It is one of the most watched beauty pageants in North East India. It co-exists with Femina Miss India Manipur, Miss Kangleipak and Miss Meetei Chanu. The titleholder of Miss Manipur represents Manipur in the Miss North East, organised by Northeast Beauty Pageant Organisation (NEBPO) every year.

Mount Manipur, formerly known as Mount Harriet, is the third highest peak in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. The mountain houses the Mount Manipur Memorial, which commemorates the Manipuri freedom fighters of the Anglo-Manipur War and the Mount Manipur National Park (Mount Harriet National Park), which is best known for its rich biodiversity in the archipelago.
