My Brain Hurts is the third studio album by the Chicago-based punk rock band Screeching Weasel. The album was originally released on CD, vinyl and cassette in September 1991 through Lookout Records. It was the group's first album on Lookout as well as the only release with bassist Dave Naked and the first with drummer Dan Panic, the latter of which would go on to appear on several of the band's albums. The album marked a very distinct stylistic shift for the group, fully moving toward a Ramones-inspired sound and completely abandoning their previous hardcore punk influences as a condition made by vocalist Ben Weasel when reforming the band after a brief break-up. After the release of My Brain Hurts, the band grew increasingly popular within the punk community and began drawing bigger crowds at their shows, [4] which Weasel later admitted put pressure on him when recording the follow-up album Wiggle the next year. [5] The album is regarded as one of the group's best releases by critics, fans and the band members themselves. [4] [6] [7] It is one of the band's best-selling releases and is often cited as influential to many later pop punk bands. [6] [8]
In 2005, the band removed their catalog from Lookout due to unpaid royalties, alongside many other artists, and re-released the album on CD in remastered form though Asian Man Records later that year. A vinyl edition with different cover art was also issued by Recess Records in 2009.
During the tour just after the band released the Punkhouse EP, drummer Brian Vermin and bassist Sewercap formed their own band called Sludgeworth and started showing less interest in Screeching Weasel. [3] During a stop in Berkeley, California, the group went to Sergay's Recording Emporium to record songs for compilation appearances and, after the tour, Vermin and Sewercap left the band. Instead of hiring new members, vocalist Ben Weasel and guitarist John Jughead decided to break up Screeching Weasel. [3] Weasel and Jughead formed the band the Gore Gore Girls shortly after and made one compilation appearance with the band in 1990. Screeching Weasel briefly reformed in early 1991 to play what was intended to be a one-off reunion show to pay back Russ Forster, who had loaned the band money to record Boogadaboogadaboogada! . [3] After the show, Sewercap talked to Jughead about officially reuniting Screeching Weasel. Jughead liked the idea and the two approached Weasel about it. Although initially reluctant, Weasel agreed on the conditions that the band would begin playing more Ramones-influenced music and would not be called Screeching Weasel, which Sewercap and Jughead accepted. Vermin and guitarist Doug Ward were not interested in the reunion, so the other members hired Dan Sullivan ("Dan Panic") as their new drummer and Gore Gore Girls bassist Dave Lally ("Dave Naked") as their bassist. Sewercap would be renamed "Dan Vapid" and moved to rhythm guitar as Weasel wanted to continue focusing on singing. They decided to perform under the Gore Gore Girls name and began rehearsing for their first album. [3]
After recording a demo tape, Weasel sent it to Larry Livermore of Lookout Records to see if he was interested in releasing the band's album. [3] Although Livermore liked the tape, he agreed to sign them only if they went under the name Screeching Weasel, [3] explaining "it sounds like Screeching Weasel, why don't you just be Screeching Weasel? Why throw away all the publicity and credibility you've already built up?" [6] Weasel relented and the group traveled to California in July to record the album at Art of Ears Studio in San Francisco with Livermore and Andy Ernst producing. [6] Al Sobrante, former drummer for Green Day, is also credited as executive producer in the album's liner notes. [4] Despite being credited as producer, Livermore has stated that "apart from offering a few suggestions, the main one of which, to take a little longer recording, was rejected as being 'too expensive', I was mainly a cheerleader." [9] The album was recorded quickly in four days on July 2, 3, 8 and 9, 1991. [4] During the sessions, the group re-recorded a number of older songs from its catalog, including "Slogans", "Kamala's Too Nice", "Fathead" and "I Wanna Be a Homosexual". Although the former three were put on the album, the latter was released along with other outtakes from the sessions on the Pervo Devo EP. While recording the title track, which was named in reference to the Monty Python's Flying Circus sketch "Gumby Brain Specialist", [10] Weasel instructed Panic to play in the style of Aaron Cometbus of Crimpshrine during the drum break. [4] However, it did not work out because, as Weasel said, Cometbus had "too much talent." "I mean no disrespect to Aaron, but sometimes talent is a hindrance", he stated. [4] Livermore later remarked that it was "very impressive watching the band work" during the sessions, saying "They had every song totally figured out in advance, and just whipped through the 14 songs on the album and another three they were doing for a compilation [which were actually the songs on the Pervo Devo EP] in no time flat." [9]
Although the majority of the songs on My Brain Hurts were written by Weasel, as was the material on the band's previous albums, he also began collaborating more with Vapid and less with Jughead. The only song on the album to credit Jughead as co-writer is "Fathead", the original version of which previously appeared on the Punkhouse EP. In retrospect, Weasel would call Vapid the "only person with whom I felt comfortable writing songs." [5]
The guitar lead for "Guest List" was originally written by Vapid for a Sludgeworth song, but it "just wasn't working", [4] [10] while the chorus "popped into my head" as he was driving through Roscoe Village in North Center, Chicago shortly before the band went to record the album. [4] During a trip to Olympia, Washington, Vapid showed what he had written to Weasel, who combined the lead and the chorus idea into one song. [4] Weasel also brought the lead up an octave, which was reportedly a "hat tip to local heroes Naked Raygun." [4] Weasel wrote most of the lyrics to the song, but said that "'Now I get to watch her dance like the other weirdos do' was a line that only could've come from Vapid." [4]
According to Vapid, "Veronica Hates Me" started as a play on the Material Issue song "Valerie Loves Me". "At the time, I guess we were harboring ill will towards their singer, Jim Ellison, for ripping us off at a show he promoted", Vapid stated. [4] While writing the song, Weasel said he "tried to take the standard chords used in old rock 'n' roll and updated by the Ramones and twist them around a little bit." [4] Weasel stated that when he started writing the song, he made a rule that he would not "go outside of the standard four chords used in that style of song." "At the break, I used a traditional arrangement to give the listener what I assumed what they would want after I'd held out for the majority of the song" he said. Despite not being co-written with Vapid, Weasel said that he wrote the song "with him in mind", explaining that "some of my best songs from this time came solely out of my desire to write songs that would impress him." Weasel has stated he "had a blast arranging 'I Can See Clearly'", admitting that "it was the first time I'd done a decent arrangement of somebody else's song and I was very happy with the results." [4] However, the group's arrangement did not include the bridge from the original. "Our version didn't really warrant a bridge, so I replaced it with the opening guitar lead, which then changed to a melodic lead for the last four bars", Weasel said. [4]
"The Science of Myth" was partially inspired by the 1988 PBS documentary Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth . [4] Weasel stated that he "became interested in the application of spiritual beliefs" after watching it and tried to write and arrange the song in a style "favored by the type of punk band that would typically be writing anti-religion songs." [4] He was also inspired by The Mr. T Experience song "The History of the Concept of the Soul", saying he "wanted to try to do something similar by writing what would look like the Cliff's Notes version of an essay and making it flow instead of writing it in the manner of a conventional rock lyric." [4] Originally, Weasel debated not putting the song on the album, saying it seemed "a little out of place", but later decided to include it after it was recorded. [4]

Mike DaRonco of AllMusic gave the album 4 and a half out of 5 stars and hailed it as "an album that would influence seemingly a million imitators." [8] He called the album's sound "more mature" as opposed to the "angst-ridden thrash pop [they] were known for on their previous two records" and said the album "would eventually define the Screeching Weasel sound for the remainder of their careers." Screeching Weasel is an American punk rock band consisting of Ben Weasel (vocals), Mike Kennerty (guitar), Mike Hunchback (guitar), Zach "Poutine" Brandner (bass) and Pierre Marche (drums). Screeching Weasel is originally from the Chicago suburb of Prospect Heights, Illinois. The band was formed in 1986 by Ben Weasel and John Jughead. Since their formation, Screeching Weasel have reformed several times with lineup changes. Ben Weasel has been the only constant member, though Jughead was present in every incarnation of the band until 2009. Other prominent members include guitarist/bassist Dan Vapid and drummer Dan Panic, who have each appeared on six of the band's studio albums, and Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt who appeared on one.

The Queers are an American punk rock band, formed in 1981 by Portsmouth, New Hampshire native Joseph “Joe” P. King along with Scott Gildersleeve, and John “Jack” Hayes. With the addition of Keith Hages joining on bass in 1983 the band started playing their first public performances. This original lineup played a total of five or six live shows. The original lineup of The Queers initially broke up in late 1984, but reformed with Joe Queer and a new line-up in 1986. In 1990, the band signed with Shakin' Street Records and released their first album Grow Up. The album earned the band notability within New England, but with the release of their next album 1993's Love Songs for the Retarded, on Lookout! Records, their following grew larger.
Boogadaboogadaboogada! is the second studio album by the Chicago-based punk rock band Screeching Weasel. The album was originally released on vinyl in December 1988 through Roadkill Records. It was the group's only album to feature Fish on bass and the last with Steve Cheese on drums, both leaving the band shortly after the album's release. Although still influenced by hardcore punk, the album also shows hints of the band's later Ramones-inspired sound.
Wiggle is the fifth studio album by the Chicago-based punk rock band Screeching Weasel. Initially planned for release in November 1992, the album was finally released on CD, vinyl and cassette on January 15, 1993, through Lookout Records. Due to a "cymbal hissing" in the original vinyl version, the album was remixed and re-released soon afterwards.
Formula 27 is the ninth E.P. by Screeching Weasel. It was released as a companion to Bark Like a Dog, the band's first album after their second breakup. All four songs were recorded during the sessions for the album with the same lineup. This E.P. would be the last new material that the "classic" Screeching Weasel lineup of Weasel/Jughead/Vapid/Panic would release. All the songs deal with issues involving personal relationships and all but the first relate to relationship problems. The E.P. was released shortly after Bark Like A Dog on Vermiform Records. It is now out of print, but the songs are available as bonus tracks on the album Beat Is on the Brat.
"Suzanne Is Getting Married" is a song by punk rock band Screeching Weasel. It was released as a single in 1994 through Lookout! Records. The title track was written and released to commemorate the wedding of Maximumrocknroll's Suzanne Bartchy and AK Press's Ramsey Kanaan.
Punkhouse is the first EP by the Chicago-based punk rock band Screeching Weasel. The EP was originally released on 7-inch vinyl with a limited pressing of 500 copies on July 7, 1989 through Limited Potential Records. It was the band's only non-compilation release to feature drummer Brian Vermin and the first to feature Dan Vapid, who would be featured on many later Screeching Weasel albums. Musically, the songs on Punkhouse are in a similar vein to the band's previous album Boogadaboogadaboogada!, albeit with a rougher sound.

Kill the Musicians is a compilation album released in 1995 which was meant to serve as a "cleaning up" of loose ends after Screeching Weasel's breakup in 1994. The compilation collects demos, B-sides, vinyl-only EPs, and other various odds and ends the band had accumulated in their career from 1989 to 1994. It came on the heels of 1994's How to Make Enemies and Irritate People, which itself was a collection of the final songs the band had written prior to splitting up. The band would soon reform in 1996 and remain together again until 2000, when they disbanded again. This collection was out of print for a short period until it was remastered and re-released by Asian Man Records in 2005. The original album contained an in-depth essay written by Ben Weasel covering the history of the band. This was later omitted from the re-issue. In 2010, Recess Records had intentions to release a double LP vinyl reissue, however production was aborted and only a small amount of test pressings exist.
Love Songs for the Retarded is the second studio album by the American punk rock band the Queers, released in 1993 by Lookout! Records. It was the first of five studio albums the band would record for Lookout!, and their first by the lineup of singer and guitarist "Joe Queer" King, bassist Chris "B-Face" Barnard, and drummer Hugh O'Neill. It was also their first collaboration with Screeching Weasel frontman Ben Weasel, who produced the album and co-wrote two of its songs, and the first of three Queers albums recorded at Sonic Iguana Studio in Lafayette, Indiana with audio engineer Mass Giorgini, who would continue to work with the band on and off for the next 14 years as a producer and engineer. Love Songs for the Retarded became the Queers' highest-selling album, with sales surpassing 100,000 copies.
Beat Off is the fourth studio album by the American punk rock band the Queers, released in 1994 by Lookout! Records. Recorded during a time when the Queers' usual drummer, Hugh O'Neill, was on a forced leave of absence from the band to deal with heroin addiction, it featured Screeching Weasel drummer Dan Panic and guitarist Dan Vapid added to the lineup. It was the third and final Queers album produced by Screeching Weasel singer Ben Weasel, who insisted on a no-frills punk sound for the album and removed Vapid's tracks from the final mix without his knowledge.
Move Back Home is the fifth studio album by the American punk rock band the Queers, released in May 1995 by Lookout! Records. The recording sessions were marred by the band members' drug problems, and many of the songs were written in the studio. Producer and Lookout! president Larry Livermore was so displeased with the result that he took his name off of the album, and several involved parties, including singer and guitarist Joe Queer, later regarded it as sub-par. After the Queers rescinded their master recordings from Lookout! in 2006, Move Back Home was reissued by Asian Man Records the following year, having been remixed and remastered by Queer and recording engineer Mass Giorgini and with the tracks from the Surf Goddess EP added.
Surf Goddess is an EP by the American punk rock band the Queers, released in February 1995 by Lookout! Records. It marked the return of longtime drummer Hugh O'Neill to the band, after a forced leave of absence to deal with heroin addiction. Former Screeching Weasel member Dan Vapid, who had been a member of the Queers in 1994, played on the EP as a guest guitarist. Surf Goddess was the result of band leader Joe King and Lookout! head Larry Livermore being dissatisfied with the production techniques on the band's prior album, 1994's Beat Off, which producer Ben Weasel had insisted on keeping basic. King and Livermore wanted to incorporate overdubbing and other effects which Livermore felt were essential to the Queers' sound. In addition to the title track, which was co-written by Weasel, and the Queers original "Quit Talkin'", the EP includes cover versions of Tommy James and the Shondells's "Mirage" and the Undertones' "Get Over You".
Weasel Mania is a compilation album by the Chicago punk rock band Screeching Weasel. It was released on Fat Wreck Chords in 2005. The album title is an homage to the Ramones album Ramones Mania.
Pervo-Devo is the second E.P. by punk rock band Screeching Weasel. It consists of songs that were recorded for My Brain Hurts but were left off the album. The E.P. was originally included with the final issue of "Teen Punks in Heat", a sex-themed 'zine penned by Ben Weasel. There were two pressing of the record. Between the two pressings, the record label changed its name from "Shred of Dignity" to "Outpunk". All of the songs resurfaced on the band's B-sides album Kill the Musicians, though the spoken intro to "I Wanna Be A Homosexual" by Bruce LaBruce appears only on this 7".
Riverdales is the eponymously titled debut studio album by the Chicago-based punk rock band the Riverdales. Formed after the break-up of Screeching Weasel, the band sought to write more Ramones-inspired music and the album was released on June 7, 1995, through Lookout Records with the catalog number LK 120. The group supported the album by opening for Green Day on the initial US leg of the tour for their album Insomniac. Riverdales experienced substantial success on the tour, and the album became the group's best-selling release to date.
Happy, Horny, Gay and Sassy is a live E.P. released by Screeching Weasel in 1992 on 7-inch vinyl. All songs were recorded live in the WFMU Studios by Dave Parasite on January 2, 1992, and broadcast live over WFMU Radio in East Orange, New Jersey. This limited edition pressing of 300 copies was a re-release of the E.P. Snappy Answers To Stupid Questions adding a second single-sided record with 3 additional songs recorded at the same session. This is the only officially released Screeching Weasel recording which has not been made available on CD as part of a compilation. It is also the band's only release to feature Gub on bass guitar.
Between 1993 and 2000, a series of Ramones covers albums were released by Selfless Records, an independent record label based in Garland, Texas specializing in punk rock, on which bands influenced by seminal punk group the Ramones performed cover versions of entire Ramones albums. Under the Selfless label, Screeching Weasel, the Queers, and the Vindictives respectively covered the first three Ramones albums: Ramones (1976), Rocket to Russia (1977), and Leave Home (1977). Selfless then became Clearview Records and continued the series, with Boris the Sprinkler, the Parasites, the Mr. T Experience, the Beatnik Termites, and the McRackins respectively covering End of the Century (1980), It's Alive (1979), Road to Ruin (1978), Pleasant Dreams (1981), and Too Tough to Die (1984).
On its most recent LP, My Brain Hurts (Lookout), Screeching Weasel has perfected the art of pop punk, mixing up early Bob Geldof-like vocals, cheesy- fun harmonies, and melodic guitar hooks, while singer Ben pokes lyrical fun at his personal convictions.
