The NRW School of Governance is a central institution within the Institute for Political science at the University Duisburg-Essen and was founded in 2006 under the direction of Karl-Rudolf Korte. [1]
It aims, through research and teaching, to promote the scientifically sound understanding of political processes (in North Rhine-Westphalia) and does so by educating and training students in three main programs: A masters program, titled, "Political management, Public policy and Public administration", a part-time masters program ("Public Policy") and a doctoral program. [2]
On 8 November 2006, the NRW School of Governance was officially opened in a ceremony by then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Jürgen Rüttgers. [3] The launch of the institution was also made possible through sponsoring by the Germany company RAG. The company donated €100,000 over the course of two years, to help start the NRW School of Governance. [4] In May 2016 the school celebrated its 10th anniversary, [5] which was attended by President of the Bundestag Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert. [6]

At the NRW School of Governance there are two "core professorships". Christoph Bieber is the holder of the Welker Endowed Professorship for Ethics in Political Management and Society, [10] [11] which focuses on ethical issues in the political decision-making process as well as questions about responsibility, trust, credibility and transparency in politics, the public and society. The chair of the public policy and state politics professorship is Andreas Blätte. [12] [11]
Experts from politics, the media, business and science are integrated into the teaching in order to impart the study contents as practically as possible to the students.

The "Visiting Professorship for Political Management of Stiftung Mercator" is awarded once a year by the NRW School of Governance at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In 2011, the Federal Minister of Finance a. D. and former Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Peer Steinbrück, has been awarded the visiting professorship for policy management. As experts of political practice, the visiting professors are available to the Master's students in seminars as part of the study program, but there are also public events for those interested in the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Since the winter semester 2006/2007, the Master program "Political Management, Public Policy and Public Administration" [29] has been offered at the NRW School of Governance. Hundreds of students apply for the 30 annual slots. The program lasts a total of six semesters and is designed to prepare the graduates for leadership in politics, associations, companies and administration.
Guest lecturers from politics, media, economics and science supplement the curriculum and are to impart the study contents as practically as possible to the students. In the area of applied political research, the degree program conveys knowledge about organizational, communication and control techniques as well as core competencies for problem analysis and solution.

The Master program in Public Policy [31] is aimed at decision-makers in administrations, associations, media, companies or other public-policy organizations and institutions. It is designed as a part-time Masters over the course of two years. There are 15–20 slots per semester available. The two-year Masters costs a total of around €12.000. [32]
The Promotionskolleg is a doctoral program that bundles the activities of the NRW School of Governance to promote doctoral candidates. Different doctoral programs and Scholarships are offered at the NRW School of Governance. These programs offer the beneficiaries not only financial means but also special retreats for the doctoral program, method workshops, research trips and conference participation. This targeted placement of key qualifications should support a quick and successful doctorate. For students of the Master Program Politics Management with outstanding academic achievements it is possible to be included in the excellence program of the NRW School of Governance, the so-called "fast track". The excellence program is designed to give students an accelerated and structured PhD within two years. In doing so, the doctoral students can decide whether to study the Master's degree program in the first year of the program or to concentrate fully on their doctoral studies. Sponsor of the excellence program since 2007 is the Stiftung Mercator.

The NRW School of Governance designs and organizes qualification programs for external target groups. In seminars, the contents of the Master's program are provided as continuing education formats for working groups, institutions and companies.
North Rhine-Westphalia or North-Rhine/Westphalia, commonly shortened to NRW, is a state (Land) in Western Germany. With more than 18 million inhabitants, it is the most populous state in Germany. Apart from the city-states, it is also the most densely populated state in Germany. Covering an area of 34,084 km2 (13,160 sq mi), it is the fourth-largest German state by size.
Bernhard Vogel is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He was the 4th Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate from 1976 to 1988 and the 2nd Minister President of Thuringia from 1992 to 2003. He is the only person to have been head of two different German federal states and is the longest-governing Minister President of Germany. Antje Vollmer was a German Protestant theologian, academic teacher and politician of the Alliance 90/The Greens. She became a member of the Bundestag in 1983 when the Greens first entered the West German parliament, before joining the party in 1985. From 1994 to 2005, she was Vice President of the Bundestag, the first Green in the position. She was a pacifist.
The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region is the largest metropolitan region in Germany, with over ten million inhabitants. A polycentric conurbation with several major urban concentrations, the region covers an area of 7,110 square kilometres (2,750 sq mi), entirely within the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region spreads from the Ruhr area (Dortmund-Bochum-Essen-Duisburg) in the north to the urban areas of the cities of Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf, Wuppertal, Leverkusen, Cologne, and Bonn in the south. The location of the Rhine-Ruhr at the heart of the European Blue Banana makes it well connected to other major European cities and metropolitan areas such as the Randstad, the Flemish Diamond and the Frankfurt Rhine Main Region.
Günter Verheugen is a German politician who served as European Commissioner for Enlargement from 1999 to 2004, and then as European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry from 2004 to 2010. He was also one of five vice presidents of the 27-member Barroso Commission. After his retirement, he is now honorary Professor at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder).
Wolfgang Clement was a German politician and a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He was the 7th Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 27 May 1998 to 22 October 2002 and Federal Minister of Economics and Labour from 2002 to 2005. He was an Honorary Member of the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation.
Peer Steinbrück is a German politician who was the Chancellor-candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the 2013 federal election. Steinbrück served as the eighth Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2002 to 2005, a member of the Bundestag from 2009 to 2016, and as Federal Minister of Finance in the first Cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel from 2005 to 2009.
Rita Süssmuth is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). She served as the tenth president of the Bundestag.
The University of Duisburg-Essen is a public research university in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the university was awarded 194th place in the world. It was originally founded in 1654 and re-established on 1 January 2003, as a merger of the Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg and the university of Essen. It is based in both the cities of Duisburg and Essen, and a part of University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr.

Hannelore Kraft is a German politician. She served as the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2010 until 2017. Kraft was the first woman to serve as head of government of this state and was the third woman to become head of a state government in Germany. Between 1 November 2010 and 31 October 2011, she was the President of the Bundesrat, again the first woman to hold the office. She is the former leader of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia and served on the SPD's federal executive from November 2009 until May 2017, and was one of the four federal deputy chairs.
Andreas Pinkwart is a German politician and academic who served as State Minister for Economic Affairs, Digitization, Innovation and Energy in the governments of Ministers-President Armin Laschet and Hendrik Wüst of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2017 to 2022 and as Deputy Minister-President and State Minister for Innovation, Technology and Research from 2005 to 2010. He previously was the Dean of HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and holder of the Stiftungsfonds Deutsche Bank Chair of Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship.

He then became CEO of RAG AG from 2003, of which Evonik was derived in 2007. His management of a reduction in Germany's dependence on coal in a socially responsible way won him the Manager of the Year award in Germany in 2008. He was chairman of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bahn.
