NWE Nos. 6 and 7, later Class 99.610, are narrow gauge tank locomotives with a C axle arrangement that belonged to the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway.

The two engines had been supplied to the Army Technical Research Institute (Heerestechnische Prüfungsanstalt) but were transferred in 1917 (superheated steam engine) and 1921 (saturated steam engine) to the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway as NWE 6 and NWE 7.

NWE 7 had previously worked as Locomotive No. 15 with the Nassau Light Railway.

Until the 1980s, both engines were used around Wernigerode by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, their last duties being in Rollbock service. The DR gave them new numbers following their nationalisation. Although they had been taken out of service, the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways took both engines over.

Only 99 6101 is currently in working order.

The Harz Narrow Gauge Railways is a railway company that operates a 1,000 mmmetre gauge network in the Harz mountains, in central Germany. The company was formed after the Second World War as a merger of two earlier companies. It owns about 140 kilometres of track, connecting the principal towns of Wernigerode, Nordhausen and Quedlinburg and several smaller settlements in the area. Much of the network is steeply graded and picturesque, but its most popular destination is the Brocken, the highest mountain in the region. The company runs a significant number of its trains with steam haulage, mostly employing 1950s vintage 2-10-2 tank locomotives, hauling traditional open-platform bogie carriages. The company is mainly owned by the various local authorities whose territories it serves.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Molli railway</span>

The Molli is a narrow-gauge steam-powered railway in Mecklenburg, Germany, running on 900 mm gauge track. It operates between Bad Doberan, Heiligendamm and Kühlungsborn West over a total distance of 15.4 km with a running time of 40 minutes. Within Bad Doberan the line runs through the street, and later along a linden tree-lined avenue.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Harz Railway</span>

The Harz Railway or Trans-Harz Railway was formerly the main line of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways and runs north to south right across the Harz Mountains from Wernigerode to Nordhausen. However, the tourist attraction of the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz, is so great that the Brocken Railway is effectively the main line today. The Trans-Harz Railway joins up with the Selke Valley Railway to Quedlinburg at Eisfelder Talmühle where all trains are organised to make good connections.

The Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway Company or NWE was the second railway company to be founded in the Harz mountains in Germany, after the Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway Company. On 15 June 1896 the NWE was formed by the Vereinigten Eisenbahnbau- und Betriebs-Gesellschaft in Berlin, who also ran its operations. As early as 1896 the first section of this narrow gauge Harz Railway ('Harzquerbahn') was opened, followed in 1898 by the Brocken Railway (Brockenbahn), which was also narrow gauge. On 1 April 1908, the NWE took over operations from the Vereinigten Eisenbahnbau- und Betriebsgesellschaft.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Saxon IV K</span>

The Saxon IV K were narrow gauge, 0-4-4-0T Günther-Meyer type steam engines built for the Royal Saxon State Railways with a track gauge of 750 mm. A total of 96 were built between 1892 and 1921, making the Saxon IV K the most numerous narrow gauge locomotive in Germany. In 1925 the Deutsche Reichsbahn grouped these engines into their DRG Class 99.51–60.

Steam traction was the predominant form of motive power used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn on its narrow-gauge railways. For certain duties diesel locomotives were also used, albeit these were usually second-hand or rebuilt engines.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rügen narrow-gauge railway</span>

The Rügen narrow-gauge railway – nicknamed Rasender Roland – is a steam-powered narrow-gauge railway that runs from Putbus by way of Binz, Sellin, and Baabe to Göhren on the island of Rügen off the Baltic Coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Since 2008, it has been run by the Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn mbH. There is an interchange with the island's Deutsche Bahn mainline network via the Veolia-run OLA railways. The Rasender Roland is one of the island's tourist attractions. It serves several holiday destinations, mainly the bathing resorts in Rügen's southeast.

The Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway Company or GHE was a private railway company in Germany that operated the Selke Valley Railway. It had a junction with the network of the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway Company (NWE) at Eisfelder Talmühle station.

The Gothic Revival entrance building of 1862, together with the other parts of the nearly complete Gründerzeit ensemble, is heritage-protected.
