Nasir Aslam Wani (born 31 August 1964) is an Indian politician from the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and belongs to the National Conference party.

He has served the State as the Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Housing & Urban Development, PHE, Revenue & Relief and later taking on responsibility for the Minister of State Home department as an additional portfolio. [1]

Wani is presently the Provincial President of National Conference for Kashmir and Constituency Incharge for Kupwara. [2] [3] He is the grandson of politician, late Ghulam Nabi Wani Sogami. [4] He contested elections in 2008 from Amirakadal Constituency.

Political career

Nasir Aslam Wani was involved with various NGOs for social work. He joined the Youth National Conference in 1998 and was nominated as Central Secretary. He worked as the Provincial Secretary of Kashmir Province and was also a member of the Central Working Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. [5]

At Amirakadal, Nasir got 3922 votes against 3103 of his rival Parvez Ahmad of PDP. [6]

Wani was elected as a member of J&K Legislative Assembly in 2008 General Elections from Amirakadal Constituency; inducted in the Council of Ministers headed by Mr. Omar Abdullah as Minister of State for Housing & Urban Development, PHE, Tourism and Revenue & Relief on 11 July 2009. [7]

Wani was given an additional charge of the Home Department. [8]

The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) is a regional political party in the Indian union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Founded as the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference by Sheikh Abdullah and Chaudhry Ghulam Abbas in 1932 in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the organisation renamed itself to "National Conference" in 1939 in order to represent all the people of the state. It supported the accession of the princely state to India in 1947. Prior to that, in 1941, a group led by Ghulam Abbas broke off from the National Conference and revived the old Muslim Conference. The revived Muslim Conference supported the accession of the princely state to Pakistan and led the movement for Azad Kashmir.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was an Indian politician who served twice as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, during November 2002–November 2005 and March 2015–January 2016. He was also Minister of Tourism in Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet and Home Minister of India in V. P. Singh's cabinet. He started in the wing of the National Conference led by G. M. Sadiq, which later merged into the Indian National Congress. He switched to Janata Dal in 1987, eventually founding his own regional party, People's Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP continues to be a political force in Jammu and Kashmir, currently led by his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.

Mehbooba Mufti is an Indian politician of the PDP, who served as the 9th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She was the first Female CM of J&K. After the revocation of the special status (autonomy) of the state in August 2019, Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act. She was released only in October 2020, after the Supreme Court of India quizzed the government about the length of her detention.

Elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are conducted in accordance with the Constitution of India to elect the representatives of various bodies at national, state and district levels including the 114 seat unicameral Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Parliament of India. Abdul Rashid Dar was a politician and lawyer from the state of Jammu & Kashmir, who served as the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council. The Secretary General of Rajya Sabha R.C Tripathi in his book "Bicameralism Today" defines Dar as the lawyer with a shining career.". Dar started his career with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference when he won the election from Shangus Anantnag and became an MLA. Dar holds distinction for being the only chairman two have won two consecutive terms. He also remains the longest serving chairman of Jammu and Kashmir.

A District Development Council is a form of elected local government in Jammu and Kashmir facilitated by the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 and created under Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Rule, 1996 of the constitution of India. They are primarily aimed at electing the members from the rural and urban areas for the District Planning Committee and the councils themselves with fourteen members from each district for speedy development and economic upliftment.

Mubarak Ahmad Gul, also known as Mubarak Gul, is an Indian politician and a former member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Eidgah constituency. Affiliated with Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, he also served speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly in 2013 to 2015 and advisor to the then chief minister Omar Abdullah.

Peer Mohammed Hussain Soharvardi better known as Sher–e–Kuthar among his followers is a Kashmiri politician and former Minister of State in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. He served as Member of Legislative Assembly (2002-2008) after being elected from the Shangus assembly constituency. He, subsequently, also served as Vice Chairman of the J&K Muslim Wakf Board.
