Natalie Butler (born 20 January 1984) is an Australian international netball player. As well as playing for several clubs in Australia's domestic competitions, she also made multiple appearances for the Australian Diamonds in various international competitions and tests.

Domestic career

Born in Warracknabeal in Victoria, she moved to Millicent in South Australia at the age of 3. [2] She played for local club Millicent Saints as a junior. [3] Medhurst rose to prominence in 2004, when the then-twenty-year-old had a strong debut for the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Replacing club stalwart Jacqui Delaney, Medhurst put many of the world's best defenders to task with her accuracy, speed, and elusive nature. With the start of the ANZ Championship in 2008, Medhurst re-signed with the Thunderbirds for the inaugural season in. She stayed at the club for two years, before signing with the Queensland Firebirds for the 2010 season. At the Firebirds she claimed the 2011 premiership and was named the season's MVP. [4]

In 2014, Medhurst moved to Perth to play for the West Coast Fever, [1] reuniting with her former Australian coach Norma Plummer, shifting with Firebirds wing attack Chelsea Pitman, and forging stronger links with Australian goal shooter Caitlin Bassett. Later, she was announced as club captain. Medhurst quickly became the highest-profile player at the Fever. In 2017 the new Super Netball league was formed and Medhurst signed a three-year deal with the Fever that was supposed to have resulted in her staying at the club until the end of the 2019 season. [5] [6] Controversially, Medhurst's final year option with the Fever was not picked up after their 2018 campaign ended up in a grand final loss. On 14 September 2018, Collingwood Magpies Netball announced they had signed her on a two-year deal. [7] [6] In 2019 Medhurst played 15 matches for the Magpies and had a shooting accuracy rate of 82%. She announced she would step back from her netball career for much of the 2020 season, due to pregnancy. [8] Despite harbouring hopes of returning to play for the Magpies in the latter half of the 2020 season, Medhurst was unable to play any games due to the travel and quarantine restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. She announced her retirement from the game on 9 September 2020. [9]

International career

Medhurst went on to represent Australia at the 2005 World Youth Championships, in Fort Lauderdale Florida, where they finished in third place. She continued to develop as a player at open level, and in 2007 she finally made her debut with the Australia national netball team against Jamaica on 8 July 2007. Her shooting accuracy was 100% during the quarter she was on, shooting 7 from 7.

Medhurst continued her strong debut season for Australia during the 2007 Netball World Championships, where she ended the preliminary rounds as the third-most accurate shooter at the championships, with a strike rate of 91%. Her rise continued in the grand final against New Zealand, when she was brought on in the final quarter when Australia's senior shooters were struggling. She calmly converted all three of her attempts at goal, with Australia winning the final 42–38, making Medhurst a world champion. She cemented her position in the Australian line-up over time, and was named in the national team's 2014 Commonwealth Games side where she gold. By 2015 Medhurst had reached the elite ranks of international netball, becoming one of only eight players to have won three world titles, with success at the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney. Medhurst played a crucial supporting role in the final to shooter Caitlin Bassett that saw the Diamonds win their third-straight World Championship, winning 58-55. Medhurst and teammate Julie Corletto both made their debut together in 2007 and finished with their third World Championship, with Corletto retiring from netball following the Tournament. She continued to feature in the Diamonds line-ups in 2016, though in June 2017 she was left out of the squad for the international season. [11]

The 2011 ANZ Championship season was the fourth season of the ANZ Championship. The 2011 season began on 13 February and concluded on 22 May. With a team coached by Roselee Jencke, captained by Lauren Nourse and featuring Romelda Aiken, Laura Geitz, Clare McMeniman and Natalie Medhurst, Queensland Firebirds finished the season undefeated. They became the first team in the history of the ANZ Championship to go through the regular season and the playoffs without losing a single match. In the major semi-final, Firebirds defeated Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and in the grand final they defeated Northern Mystics, winning their first premiership. This marked the beginning of a golden age for Firebirds. Between 2011 and 2016, Jencke guided them to five grand finals and three premierships.

Chelsea Pitman is an Australian-born netball player who represented the England National Netball Team internationally until 18 September 2023. In 2024 she was contracted as a training partner and temporary replacement player for the GIANTS Netball playing in the Suncorp Super Netball competition in Australia and announced her retirement during round 9 from all levels of competition. She predominantly played wing attack, but also played goal attack.

The Collingwood Magpies were an Australian professional netball team in Melbourne that competed in the premier domestic league, Suncorp Super Netball. The team was founded in 2016, during the disbanding of the ANZ Championship. The Magpies were owned by the professional Australian Football League entity, the Collingwood Football Club. The team's home games were predominantly played at John Cain Arena. In May 2023, news reports disclosed that the team was in financial distress, and later that month the Collingwood Football Club announced it would withdraw its netball team at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

The 2019 Suncorp Super Netball season was the third season of the premier netball league in Australia. The season began on 27 April and concluded on 15 September 2019, however it was suspended for most of the month of July due to the Netball World Cup, which was played in Liverpool.

The 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season was the fourth season of the premier netball league in Australia. The season was originally scheduled to commence on 2 May, though was delayed to 1 August due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The defending premiers, New South Wales Swifts were eliminated in the first week of the finals series by the eventual runners-up West Coast Fever. The premiers were the Melbourne Vixens, who defeated the Fever by two goals in the Grand Final at Nissan Arena in Brisbane.

The 2015 New South Wales Swifts season saw New South Wales Swifts compete in the 2015 ANZ Championship. Swifts finished the regular season in second place in the Australian Conference. In the play-offs, they defeated West Coast Fever and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic but twice lost narrowly to Queensland Firebirds in both the Australian Conference final and the Grand Final. It was Swifts' first appearance in the title decider since their successful 2008 campaign.

The 2022 Suncorp Super Netball season was the sixth season of the premier netball league in Australia. The season commenced on 26 March and concluded with the Grand Final on 3 July. The defending premiers were the New South Wales Swifts, who narrowly missed out on the finals series. The West Coast Fever won their very first premiership in the club's history, after defeating the Melbourne Vixens 70–59 in the Grand Final.

The 2023 Suncorp Super Netball season was the seventh season of the premier netball league in Australia. The season commenced on Saturday 18 March and concluded with the Grand Final on Saturday 8 July at John Cain Arena. The defending premiers were the West Coast Fever, who were eliminated in the Preliminary Final by the New South Wales Swifts. The Adelaide Thunderbirds won their first premiership in 10 years, narrowly defeating the New South Wales Swifts 60-59 after an extra time Grand Final thriller. This season was the last season to feature the Collingwood Magpies, who withdrew from the competition at the end of the season due to financial difficulties.
