Sharelle Jane McMahon (born 12 August 1977) is an Australian former netball player who captained the Australia national netball team. She played in the goal attack and goal shooter positions.

Domestic career

Born in Bamawm, Victoria, McMahon captained the Melbourne Vixens in the ANZ Championship and played 11 seasons for the Melbourne Phoenix (as a captain for four seasons) in the previous Commonwealth Bank Trophy. She led the Vixens to the ANZ Championship title in 2009, defeating the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the grand final.

McMahon captained the Vixens from its inaugural season in 2008 until 2011, sharing the captaincy with Bianca Chatfield from 2009. McMahon was best and fairest for the Vixens in 2009 and 2010, having previously been voted best and fairest for Melbourne Phoenix four times between 2000 and 2007. [4]

On 31 March 2011, McMahon ruptured her Achilles tendon in an ANZ Championship game against Queensland Firebirds. [5] Following surgery, she withdrew from the 2011 Netball World Championships in Singapore, and was considering her playing future. [6] Australian coach Norma Plummer described McMahon as "probably the most athletic player of natural talent" to have played the game. [7]

McMahon confirmed during the off season that she would be returning to the Melbourne Vixens in the 2012 ANZ Championship. But after playing one pre season match [8] McMahon announced that she was pregnant and withdrew from the Vixens team for the 2012 season. [9] Her son Xavier was born on 30 August 2012 and her daughter Ruby was born on 27 November 2015.

On 25 October 2012 it was announced that McMahon would return to the Melbourne Vixens for the 2013 season. [10] McMahon officially retired at the end of the 2013 season. [11] At the end of each season, the Melbourne Vixens' most valuable player is awarded the Sharelle McMahon Medal.

In 2017 McMahon joined the match review panel of the AFL Women's football league in its inaugural year. [12]

International career

McMahon's international career began when she was selected in the Australian Under 21 team in 1996 following her performances in the Victorian Under 21 team. In 1997, she made her début for the Australia national netball team against the Jamaica in Jamaica. She was the youngest member of the Australian team which won the netball gold medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

In September 2009, McMahon made her 100th appearance for the national side, captaining Australia to a 36–33 win against New Zealand. McMahon captained the Australian team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and was selected as the Australian flagbearer for the opening ceremony. [13]

In 2010 McMahon won the Australia's Favourite Diamond award. [14]

Late in 2011, McMahon considered her 2012 future in the Australian Diamonds. I had some thoughts of how it would be nice to finish my career and it definitely didn't involve being carried off the court with a snapped Achilles, McMahon said. There's a lot that has to happen before I do make it back in the team, she said. They've won a world championship without me so I'm certainly not expecting to walk straight back in. [15]

In October 2016, she was inducted as an Athlete Member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. [16]

She was also a member of the Australia teams that won silver medals at the 2003 World Netball Championships and the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games. Cox captained Australia on seven occasions, including when they won the 2011 Constellation Cup.

Julie Prendergast is an Australian international netball player. She played for the Australian Diamonds and NSW Swifts but has now retired. She usually played in the positions of goal defence and wing defence. Corletto is the younger sister of former AFL footballer Ian Prendergast and former Victorian State netballer Karen Dennis,.

Melbourne Vixens is an Australian professional netball team based in Melbourne, Victoria. Since 2017 they have represented Netball Victoria in Suncorp Super Netball. Between 2008 and 2016, they played in the ANZ Championship. The team was formed in 2007 when Netball Victoria merged its two former Commonwealth Bank Trophy league teams, Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne Kestrels. Vixens have won three premierships, in 2009, 2014 and 2020.

The 2009 ANZ Championship season was the second season of the ANZ Championship. The 2009 season began on 4 April and concluded on 26 July. Melbourne Vixens were minor premiers. With a team co-captained by Bianca Chatfield and Sharelle McMahon, Vixens subsequently defeated Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic 58–43 in the major semi-final and Adelaide Thunderbirds 54–46 in the grand final to finish as overall premiers. The grand final was played on Sunday 26 July at Hisense Arena.

Simone McKinnis is a former Australia netball international and the current head coach of Melbourne Vixens in Suncorp Super Netball. As a player she was a member of the Australia teams that won gold medals at the 1991 and 1995 World Netball Championships, the 1993 World Games and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. She also captained the Melbourne Phoenix team that won the 1997 Commonwealth Bank Trophy. She was head coach when Vixens won the 2014 ANZ Championship and the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball titles. In 1992, McKinnis was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia and in 2010 was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame.

Elizabeth Watson, commonly known as Liz Watson, is an Australia netball international. Watson was a member of the Australia teams that won the silver medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2019 Netball World Cup. In 2018 and 2022 she received the Liz Ellis Diamond award. She captained Australia during the 2021 Constellation Cup. Since 2014, Watson has played for Melbourne Vixens, initially in the ANZ Championship and later in Suncorp Super Netball. She was a member of the Vixens' teams that won premierships in 2014 and 2020.

Kate Moloney is an Australian netballer who plays for the Melbourne Vixens in the Suncorp Super Netball league. As of April 2017, she is the captain of the Vixens. Moloney made her domestic league netball debut for the Vixens in 2013 and was appointed captain of the team four years later. She made her debut for the Australian national netball team in 2017, going on to be selected in the Australian Diamonds squad for the 2018/19 international season. Kate has represented her country on 35 occasions.

She was a member of the Victorian Fury teams that won Australian Netball League titles in 2009, 2013 and 2014.

The 2009 Melbourne Vixens season saw Melbourne Vixens play in the 2009 ANZ Championship. With a team co-captained by Bianca Chatfield and Sharelle McMahon, Melbourne Vixens won 12 of their 13 matches during the regular season and finished as minor premiers. Vixens subsequently defeated Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic 58–43 in the major semi-final and Adelaide Thunderbirds 54–46 in the grand final to finish as overall premiers. Vixens hosted the grand final on Sunday 26 July at Hisense Arena.

The 2014 Melbourne Vixens season saw Melbourne Vixens compete in the 2014 ANZ Championship. With a team coached by Simone McKinnis, captained by Bianca Chatfield and also featuring Tegan Caldwell, Geva Mentor, Madison Robinson and Catherine Cox, Melbourne Vixens won both the minor premiership and the overall championship. Vixens defeated Queensland Firebirds in both the major semi-final and the grand final as they won their second premiership. They won their first in 2009.
