The National History Museum is a digital museum located in Greater Iqbal Park in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. A project of the Parks and Horticulture Authority Lahore (under the Government of Punjab), it was inaugurated on 17 April 2018 by Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif. [1] Citizens Archives Pakistan, a not-for-profit organization, was selected to curate the project. [2] It is the first digital museum of Pakistan. [3]

The museum consists of five sections, displaying various aspects of the Pakistan Movement, and the cinema, music, and sport of Pakistan. [4]

History

On 29 January 2014, the Punjab government approved the renovation and landscaping of Minar-e-Pakistan and Circular Gardens area in the 28th meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party. The new park was to be known as the Greater Iqbal Park. [5] After several delays, [6] the first phase of the project was inaugurated on 17 December 2016 by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. [7]

The second phase involved the establishment of a national history museum at the northern end of the park. On 17 April 2018, Chief Minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the museum. [8] The project was built in a period of 14 months at a cost of Rs. 300 million. [9] For the first few weeks, it hosted public school tours in partnership with the Punjab School Education Department. [1] It was opened for public on 1 July 2018. [3]

Collections

The museum's collections have been divided into five sections, each focusing on a different aspect of Pakistan's culture and history.

Hall-1

Hall-1 is devoted to the history of the subcontinent, from the arrival of the East India Company to major events of the Pakistan Movement, including audiovisual displays of the Lahore Resolution (which was passed at Minar-e-Pakistan also located inside the Greater Iqbal Park), the Gandhi-Jinnah talks of 1944, the 3 June Plan, and the Indian Independence Act 1947. Hall-2

This section focuses on the Partition of India, and includes oral accounts of the people who migrated to Pakistan as a part of the largest mass migration in human history, [10] as well as a video display showing the communal riots of 1947. [4]

Hall-3

Hall-3 shows the major developments which took place in the nascent country, including the formation of the government and the armed forces. Dioramas of Wagah railway station and post-independence refugee camps are also present. Visitors can also observe the difficulties experienced by the migrants through a 3-D virtual reality display. A photo booth can also be used to take a photograph with the Quaid-e-Azam and other Founding Fathers. [4]

Hall-4

The popular culture of Pakistan is displayed in Hall-4, and encompasses Lollywood, the evolution of Pakistani music, and traditional handicrafts. Visitors can also watch clips from famous Pakistani films, and listen to classic songs. [4]

Hall-5

This section showcases the sports history of Pakistan. Portraits and busts of famous personalities of the country are also present. [4]

Mian Muhammad Hamza Shahbaz is a Pakistani politician, businessman, and the eldest son of current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab from September 2018 to April 2022, and resumed this role on 20 October 2022 and continued until the dissolution of the assembly. He briefly held the position of Chief Minister of Punjab from 30 April 2022 to 2 May 2022. His tenure as a member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab spanned from August 2018 to January 2023. The Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Again restored public holiday in 2022. Iqbal, a poet and philosopher, was a great inspiration for the Pakistan Movement.

The Sharif family is a Pakistani political family based in Lahore, Punjab. They belong to the Bhat Kashmiri caste which is a large community living in many districts of Punjab. They have had two members of the family that became prime ministers of Pakistan them being Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif respectively.

Mian Abbas Sharif was a Pakistani politician and Tablighi Jamaat missionary who was the Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 1993 to 1997. He was the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif.

The Multan Metrobus is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. Construction work on the line began in May 2015, while operations commenced on 24 January 2017. It was the third BRT project in Pakistan, after the Lahore Metrobus and the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus.

The Javed Manzil or the Allama Iqbal Museum is a monument and museum in Lahore, Pakistan. Muhammad Iqbal lived there for three years, and died there. It was listed as a Tentative UNESCO site, and was protected under the Punjab Antiquities Act of 1975, and declared a Pakistani national monument in 1977. In honour of Iqbal, a Pakistani national poet, it was converted into a museum, inaugurated in December 1984.

Shehbaz Sharif served the longest tenure in history as chief minister of Punjab spanning over 11 years of rule. His tenures involved the 1997 Nawaz Government, the 2008 Pakistan Peoples Party's regime and the 2013 PML-N's rule. His prominent contribution involves infrastructure development, transit projects and power plants. He has developed flyovers, road infrastructures, transit services and power projects. He is best known for his dedication, working speed, ability to execute mega projects and quick actions. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Margalla Avenue</span> Planned highway in Islamabad, Pakistan

The Margalla Avenue or Margalla Expressway is a 33-kilometer six-lane highway in the Margalla Hills area in the suburbs of Islamabad, Pakistan. It was planned in 1966, but work on it was stalled till 2021. The road is an alternative to the Srinagar Highway, and provides easy access of the tenth and eleventh sectors of Islamabad to the N-5 National Highway. This road is a crucial section of the larger Rawalpindi Ring Road project as it connects the town of Sangjani to the town of Barakahu.

On 14 August 2021, Ayesha Akram, a social media celebrity, was sexually assaulted by a crowd at Minar-e-Pakistan, Lahore, Pakistan. In a video recording of the incident that went viral days later, the crowd was seen picking up the woman, throwing her up in the air between them, tearing off her clothes, and assaulting and groping her.
