As a researcher, teacher, and practitioner,Lister uses an integrated design-research approach to explore resilience and adaptive systems design in urbanizing regions. Emphasizing ecosystem complexity and biodiversity, her work is positioned at the confluence of landscape, ecology, and urbanism. She founded PLANDFORM in 2006. [4]
At Toronto Metropolitan University,Lister founded and directs the Ecological Design Lab,a collaborative incubation innovator and experimental generator that aims to advance ecological design research and practice. [6] She is a member of the Toronto Metropolitan University's Urban Water Centre, where she contributes work on designing resilient green and blue infrastructure for flood-friendly cities. [7] Since 2016,her work has been funded by a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant and a Graham Foundation publication grant. [8]
In her professional practice,Lister regularly collaborates with international design firms on submissions to juried competitions and exhibitions, with a particular focus on speculative and built works in metropolitan areas. [9] In 2010,she served as the Professional Advisor for the ARC International Wildlife Crossing Design Competition, which focused on creating a wildlife bridge at the Vail Pass in Colorado. [10] Her work has been featured in international exhibitions, including the 2016 Venice Architectural Biennale, where she contributed to Canada's entry,EXTRACTION,an examination of Canada's role as a global resource juggernaut. She is the curator and director of XING - (re)connecting landscapes,a permanent exhibition at the Toronto Zoo exploring the relationship between wildlife, human development, and urban infrastructure. [11]
She is the co-editor of Projective Ecologies (with Chris Reed,Harvard GSD and ACTAR Press,2014) and The Ecosystem Approach:Complexity,Uncertainty, and Managing for Stability (with David Waltner-Toews and James Kay,Columbia University Press,2008). [12] In addition to authoring over 100 professional and scholarly articles, including contributions to Design With Nature Now (Lincoln Land Institute,2019),Nature &Cities:The Ecological Imperative in Urban Planning &Design (Lincoln Land Institute,2016),Is Landscape…Essays on the Identity of Landscape (Routledge,2016),Ecological Urbanism (Harvard GSD with Lars Müller Publishers,2010),and Large Parks (Princeton Architectural Press,2008,winner of the J.B. Jackson Book Prize),Lister has served as guest editor of the Journal of Ecological Restoration. [13]
Lister was awarded an honorary membership in the American Society of Landscape Architects in recognition of her international leadership in ecological design. [14] [15] She was also named Senior Scholar with the Centre for Humans and Nature in 2012,and a Senior Fellow of Massey College in 2021. [16]

He was the founder of the department of landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. His 1969 book Design with Nature pioneered the concept of ecological planning. It continues to be one of the most widely celebrated books on landscape architecture and land-use planning. In this book,he set forth the basic concepts that were to develop later in geographic information systems.

Health ecology is an emerging field that studies the impact of ecosystems on human health. It examines alterations in the biological, physical, social, and economic environments to understand how these changes affect mental and physical human health. Health ecology focuses on a transdisciplinary approach to understanding all the factors which influence an individual's physiological, social, and emotional well-being.
Sustainable landscape architecture is a category of sustainable design concerned with the planning and design of the built and natural environments.
Landscape urbanism is a theory of urban design arguing that the city is constructed of interconnected and ecologically rich horizontal field conditions, rather than the arrangement of objects and buildings. Landscape Urbanism, like Infrastructural Urbanism and Ecological Urbanism, emphasizes performance over pure aesthetics and utilizes systems-based thinking and design strategies. The phrase 'landscape urbanism' first appeared in the mid 1990s. Since this time, the phrase 'landscape urbanism' has taken on many different uses, but is most often cited as a postmodernist or post-postmodernist response to the "failings" of New Urbanism and the shift away from the comprehensive visions, and demands, for modern architecture and urban planning.

Ecological urbanism draws from ecology to inspire an urbanism that is more socially inclusive and sensitive to the environment. It is less ideologically driven, than green urbanism or sustainable urbanism. In many ways, ecological urbanism is an evolution of,and a critique of,Landscape Urbanism arguing for a more holistic approach to the design and management of cities. This type of urbanism has a central scope of four main objectives:Compactness, complexity, efficiency, and stability. This model of Urbanism strives to tackle the current challenges of society by intertwining sustainability and urban occupation models. "Ecological urbanism" was coined by architect and planner Miguel Ruano in his 1998 book Eco-Urbanism:Sustainable Human Settlements,60 Case Studies. The term first appeared as "EcoUrbanism",which is defined as "the development of multi-dimensional sustainable human communities within harmonious and balanced built environments". The term was used later in April 2003 at a conference at the University of Oregon, and again in 2006 in a paper by Jeffrey Hou. Mohsen Mostafavi used the term in the 2007 publication Intervention Architecture and in a lecture at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Today, ecological urbanism is recognized as a formal academic research topic. Notably, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design has conducted a conference, held an art exhibition, and published a book all centered around ecological urbanism.
