Mohd Nizam Abdul Razak (born 14 August 1983) is a Malaysian animator. He is best known as the creator and director of Malaysian animated series, BoBoiBoy and its franchise. [1] He is one of the co-founders and Managing Director of Animonsta Studios, which is based in Cyberjaya. [2] [3] He is a graduate of Multimedia University, majoring in Film and Animation.

Career

2005–2009: Misi: Mustahak and early career with Les' Copaque

On his final year project, Nizam, along with his close friends, Usamah Zaid Yasin, Safwan Karim and Nazrul Hadi Nazlan created 'Misi: Mustahak', a short film about three old folks role-playing as spies. [4] Nizam revealed that their project was tremendously well-received by their classmates. [5] [6]

After graduating from Multimedia University, Nizam's talent was recognized by Burhanuddin Radzi who previously worked at oil rig. Together, Burhanuddin with his wife, Ainon Ariff established Les' Copaque Production (named after a Malay phrase, Last Kopek) together with Usamah and himself with Safwan and Nazrul joined the studio later on. He later took his role as the director of Upin & Ipin series.

After three seasons, Nizam directed Malaysia's first 3D animated film, Geng: The Adventure Begins and co-written the story with Anas Abdul Aziz and Ainon Ariff. The film receives positive reviews [7] and also receives Special Jury Award in Malaysia Film Festival. [8]

2009–2016: Animonsta Studios's breakthrough with BoBoiBoy

Nizam together with Safwan, Anas and Kee Yong Pin left Les' Copaque and established their own animation studio Animonsta Studios; better knows as MONSTA; where Nizam serves as the chief executive officer. [9]

In 2011, Nizam created the series BoBoiBoy with Anas Abdul Aziz as his co-creator, Safwan as art director and Yong Pin as production director. The show became a big hit and gained massive popularity, both domestically and internationally in 44 different countries, among them being Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei. [10]

In 2016, MONSTA released their first film BoBoiBoy: The Movie in theatres which aired on the 3rd of March, competing with big-name films such as Zootopia and Kung Fu Panda 3 . Despite the competition, Boboiboy: The Movie successfully gained a box office of RM15.7 million domestically and RM20 million internationally. The film also won 'Best Animated Film' at the Malaysia Film Festival in 2018.

Boboiboy the series officially ended in 2016 after running for 3 seasons. The franchise later than continued with a sequel series titled and rebranded as 'Boboiboy Galaxy' which was officially released in 2017.

2017–2019: BoBoiBoy Galaxy, second BoBoiBoy movie and Papa Pipi

BoBoiBoy Galaxy was created to continue BoBoiBoy's journey to find new elemental powers. [11] [12] As the series in production, Nizam and MONSTA announced second film was also in production. [13] Teaser was released early in 2019 with Astro Shaw distributed the film for Malaysia and Brunei region who are known for their box-office franchise such as Polis Evo . [14] The film hit the box-office for collecting RM30 million in 5 countries and award raining nominations such from New York Animation Film Awards, Florence Film Awards for best poster designer nomination and many more. [15]

Besides the success of both of the series and film, Nizam creating Papa Pipi based on characters from BoBoiBoy series whose voiced by Nizam himself for Papa Zola character. The series told about Papa Zola's family in lives and made public service announcement to teach the audience what's right and what's wrong. [16]

2020–present: Mechamato and continued success

Nizam creating Mechamato for making people imagine to mechanize things. The series was announced early in 2020 in MONSTA's announcement of their new era; thus creating Power Sphera Universe. [16] It was originated to be started as a film but was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. [17] The series was released in December 2021 with Nizam appointed as writer with MONSTA's writers' room. [18] The series received huge positive reaction for being creative and managed to distributed over 60 countries including Japan, South Korea and Portugal. [19] [20] The series later won Anime Fan Award in Tokyo Anime Award Festival to become the first foreign to win the award. [21] [22]

The film based on characters, Mechamato Movie co-produced by MONSTA and Astro Shaw; written and directed by Nizam released in 2022; 2 years after COVID-19 pandemic delay and enormous series popularity. [23] The film received huge positive reaction either from Malaysia, Indonesia or Japan [24] and huge box-office hit by collected RM35.88 million. [25] The film was the first ever Malaysia animated film to screen in Japan's biggest cinema chain, Aeon Entertainment [26] also was highlighted as one of Malaysian Buddy Duo films alongside Polis Evo 3 and Songlap. [27]

Personal life

Nizam Razak born in Johor Bahru, Johor and raised in Duyung, Central Malacca, Malacca. He has a younger sister. Nizam married Ezdiani Ahmad Fauzi in 2004 and blessed with three children, two boys and a girl. [12]

Recognition

In June 2023, Nizam receive recognition from Tatler Asia as "Gen.T (Malaysia)" for creating Malaysia's most beloved animation ( BoBoiBoy and Mechamato ). [28]

BoBoiBoy is a Malaysian animated series and franchise produced by Animonsta Studios. With his friends, Yaya, Ying, Gopal and Fang, they form a team and fight to protect the Earth from alien threats who aim to conquer the Earth.

Animation in Malaysia has origins in the puppetry style of wayang kulit, wherein the characters are controlled by the puppeteer, or Tok Dalang. The art of shadow play inspired German filmmaker Lotte Reiniger to create the animated The Adventures of Prince Achmed in 1926 that was based on one of the stories in the 1001 Nights. Many of the world's animators have credited Prince Achmed's recognisable style for generating their initial interest in animation as well as in their works.

Animonsta Studios Sdn. Bhd. is a Malaysian animation company that produces creative and visual content for the Malaysian and international market. The company was founded on 15 September 2009 by four former Les' Copaque Production staffs – Mohd Nizam Abd Razak, Muhammad Anas Abdul Aziz, Mohd Safwan Abd Karim and Kee Yong Pin.

BoBoiBoy: The Movie is a 2016 Malaysia animated superhero comedy film directed by Nizam Razak, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Anas Abdul Aziz. It is Animonsta Studios' first feature film, based on their animated TV series BoBoiBoy. The film follows BoBoiBoy and his friends on an adventure on a mysterious island to find Ochobot, who is kidnapped by a group of alien power sphere hunters the tengkotak so that they could locate an ancient Power Sphere that predates Ochobot.

BoBoiBoy Galaxy is a Malaysian animated television series. It is a sequel to BoBoiBoy focusing more on story-based adventures with different arcs every few episodes.

BoBoiBoy Movie 2 is a 2019 Malaysian Malay-language animated superhero comedy film produced by Animonsta Studios. Ejen Ali: The Movie is a 2019 Malaysian Malay-language animated spy-fi action film. The film follows a 12-year old spy Agent, Ali, as he embraces his role in MATA, the secret agency, and uncover the secret technology which has threatened the fate of Cyberaya. But unknown to Ali, MATA has also created a new improved version of IRIS, the IRIS NEO, to use the Override at will. Mechamato Movie is a 2022 Malaysian Malay-language animated action film and a prequel to the animated series Mechamato: The Animated Series. MALBATT: Misi Bakara is a 2023 Malaysian Malay-language military war action film directed, produced and screenplay by Adrian Teh. This film stars Bront Palarae, Shaheizy Sam, Hairul Azreen, Zahiril Adzim, Iedil Dzuhrie Alaudin, Adlin Aman Ramlie, Fauzi Nawawi, Tony Eusoff, Syazwan Zulkifly, Dafi Ismail Sabri, Taufiq Hanafi, Nafiez Zaidi, Dini Schatzmann, Gambit Saifullah, Theebaan G, Safwan Nazri and Ikhram Juhari. Keluang Man is an upcoming 2025 Malaysian live-action superhero film based on the eponymous Malaysian animated series. Produced by Astro Shaw and Pasal Productions, it's a live-action film based on the animated series created by the late Kamn Ismail, and will be the first fully live-action film from a Malaysian animation series of the 1990s. The film will be directed by Anwari Ashraf, who co-wrote it with Roshfaizal Ariffin and Luqman Sheikh Ghazali. It stars Nas-T as Keluang Man, Remy Ishak as Shamsir, Rosyam Nor as Ahmad and Anwaar Beg Moghal as Inspector Sahab.

Muhammad Usamah Zaid bin Yasin is a Malaysian animator. He is known for his work at Les' Copaque Production's animated series, Upin & Ipin and animated film, Geng: The Adventure Begins. He is also served as the CEO of WAU Animation, an animation studio he founded in 2013 and also become creator and director of Ejen Ali.
