Demuni Nuwan Tharanga Zoysa (born 13 May 1978),or Nuwan Zoysa,is a former Sri Lankan cricketer. He was a tall left-arm seam bowler,who played 30 Tests and 95 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Sri Lanka. Nuwan was educated at Isipathana College,Colombo. [1]
In his eighth Test,Zoysa became the first player in history to take a hat-trick off his first three balls of a Test match. [2] He achieved this against Zimbabwe at Harare in November 1999,dismissing Trevor Gripper,Murray Goodwin and Neil Johnson. [3]
Zoysa made his first-class debut in 1996/97 and during his first season he took his career best figures of 7 for 58,playing for Sinhalese Sports Club. He made his Test debut soon after in Dunedin against New Zealand. He took over 100 ODI wickets for Sri Lanka,becoming the eighth to have achieved the milestone in the 2004 Champions Trophy. [4]
An aggressive lower order batsman,Zoysa once won an ODI against Australia with an unbeaten 47,his highest ODI score. Zoysa's peak in international cricket came during the 2004 season when he took his best Test and ODI figures and only five-wicket hauls. [5] In May,he took 5 for 20 against Zimbabwe in the first Test at Harare and in August he claimed 5 for 26 in a ODI against South Africa in Colombo. [6] [7]
He made his Twenty20 debut on 17 August 2004,for Sinhalese Sports Club in the 2004 SLC Twenty20 Tournament. [8] He was also bought by the Deccan Chargers Franchise in the IPL but he was removed from the team for his poor performances.
Nuwan Zoysa was appointed to the National Fast Bowling Coaching Department of Sri Lanka Cricket on 1 October 2015 prior to which he has worked in India with Goa Cricket Association and with Royal College &Nondiscripts as Fast Bowling Coach before joining SLC. [9]
In October 2018,he was charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for three breaches of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. [10] In November 2020,he was found guilty of three offences, [11] and in April 2021,he was handed a six-year ban, [12] backdated to 31 October 2018. [13]
Tillakaratne Mudiyanselage Dilshan,commonly known as TM Dilshan is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and former captain of the Sri Lanka national cricket team. He is often regarded as the best rated Sri Lankan player in run-chases in ODI history and one of the most innovative players of all time. He was the top run scorer in the 2011 Cricket World Cup with 500 runs,and scored a century against England in the quarter-final. Dilshan is considered to be a rare example of a cricketer with notable skills in all aspects of the game,who can bat,bowl,field and keep wicket. He is an aggressive right-hand batsman who invented the scoop,which has come to be known as the Dilscoop,a shot that hits the ball over the keeper. Apart from being an opening batsman,he is also a capable off-break bowler. Energetic in the field,he usually fielded at the point region. He was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20.
Kulasekara Mudiyanselage Dinesh Nuwan Kulasekara is a former Sri Lankan cricketer who played all formats of the game. He was educated at Bandaranayake College Gampaha
Mohamed Farveez Maharoof,or Farveez Maharoof,is a Sri Lankan former professional cricketer,who played Tests and ODIs. He first made his impression in the 2004 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in which he captained the Sri Lankan team. He enjoyed a prolific school career for Wesley College,with a highest score of 243 and best bowling figures of 8 for 20. An all-rounder,he made his Test debut in 2004. He was part of the Sri Lankan team which finished as runners-up at the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Denagamage Praboth Mahela de Silva Jayawardene is a Sri Lankan former professional cricketer and captain of the Sri Lankan national cricket team. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen from Sri Lankan cricket.
Brendan Ross Murray Taylor is a Zimbabwean former international cricketer and a former Zimbabwean captain,who played all formats of the game. Taylor is a right-handed batsman but is also an off spinner. In 2015,former Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell described Taylor as "our standout player for the last seven or eight years". He is known for his unorthodox shots especially his ability to play upper cuts over the third man and ramp shots with elegance and are often considered as his trademark signature shots. His style of play and ability to make substantial contribution with the bat often drew comparisons with that of Andy Flower. He represented Zimbabwe in four ICC T20 World Cup tournaments in 2007,2010,2012 and 2014. Also,he represented Zimbabwe in three ICC ODI world cups as well in 2007,2011 and 2015.
Loku Hettige Danushka Dilhara,known as Dilhara Lokuhettige,is a Sri Lankan former cricketer,who played limited over cricket. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler. Lokuhittege had captained Colombo's Asoka Vidalaya from Under-13s to senior level. In January 2021,he was found guilty of three offences under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. As a result,he was banned from all cricket for eight years.
Dihan Avishka Gunawardene,is a former Sri Lankan cricketer,who played Tests and One Day Internationals. He served as the Sri Lanka A team coach for many years,and was later appointed batting coach of the national team in 2017. At present,he is the head coach of the Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team.
Magina Thilan Thushara Mirando;,or Thilan Thushara,is a former Sri Lankan cricketer,who played all formats of the game. He is a left-handed batsman and a left-arm medium-fast bowler. Though he did not represent the country in international level after 2010,Thushara is an active member in Sri Lanka domestic competitions for Moors Sports Club.
Anhettige Suresh Asanka Perera,known as Suresh Perera,is a former Sri Lankan international cricketer. A right-handed all-rounder,he played three Test and 20 One Day International (ODI) matches for the Sri Lankan national team,with his international career spanning from June 1998 to December 2001.
Warushavithana Upul Tharanga,commonly known as Upul Tharanga is a former professional Sri Lankan cricketer. A former limited-overs captain,Tharanga played all formats of the game. He was a left-handed opening batsman and an occasional wicket-keeper. On 23 February 2021,Upul announced his retirement from international cricket. He is the current national chief selector of both Sri Lanka men's and women's cricket teams.
Balapuwaduge Manukulasuriya Amith Jeevan Mendis is a former Sri Lankan professional cricketer,who played limited over internationals. An all-rounder who bowls leg spin,Mendis has represented Sri Lanka in the 2012 World Twenty20 and 2015 World Cup. Domestically,he plays for Tamil Union in Sri Lanka,and he has also played for Derbyshire in England during 2017. Mendis announced his retirement from international cricket on 28 December 2021 and migrated to Australia.
