Nysius huttoni, the wheat bug, is a species of seed bug, an insect in the family Lygaeidae. It was formerly endemic to New Zealand, but was introduced to Europe, including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. In New Zealand, it is an economically important pest of wheat and crops in the mustard family. [1] [2]
Geocoris is a genus of insects in the family Geocoridae. Commonly known as big-eyed bugs, the species in Geocoris are beneficial predators, but are often confused with the true chinch bug, which is a pest. There are more than 140 described species in Geocoris.
Nysius raphanus is a small North American insect in the order Hemiptera and family Lygaeidae. They are grey to brown in color, with largely transparent wings, and can release an offensive odor similar to stinkbugs. They have no larval stage, instead going through several nymph stages with the nymphs resembling adults but having no wings. In high numbers false chinch bugs can cause significant plant damage.
The redfin bully is a species of freshwater fish in the family Eleotridae endemic to New Zealand. Being amphidromous, it spends part of its life cycle at sea. Males have distinctive bright red patterns and stripes on their fins. Adults grow to an average of 80–100 mm (3.1–3.9 in) total length, with a maximum of 120 mm (4.7 in).
The Lygaeidae are a family in the Hemiptera, with more than 110 genera in 4 subfamilies. The family includes the insects commonly known as milkweed bugs, and also some of those known as seed bugs. The family used to be vastly larger, as numerous former subfamilies have been removed and given independent family status, including Artheneidae, Blissidae, Cryptorhamphidae, Cymidae, Geocoridae, Heterogastridae, Ninidae, Oxycarenidae, Pachygronthidae, and Rhyparochromidae, which together constituted well over half of the former family. Many of the species feed on seeds, although some feed on sap (mucivory), and a few, such as the wekiu bug, feed on insects.
Nysius wekiuicola is a species of Wēkiu bug endemic to the area surrounding the summit of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaiʻi. It is closely related to Nysius aa, which is endemic to the summit of the neighboring Mauna Loa.
Nysius aa is a species of Wēkiu bug endemic to the area around the summit of Mauna Loa, on the island of Hawaiʻi. It is closely related to Nysius wekiuicola, which is another species of Wēkiu bug endemic to the nearby Mauna Kea.
Nysius is a genus of false chinch bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are at least 100 described species in Nysius.
Metacrias huttoni is a species of moth in the family Erebidae. This species is endemic to New Zealand where it is known from the eastern areas of the South Island. The female of the species is flightless and buff coloured where as the male is brightly coloured and flies during the day.
The Blissidae are a family in the Hemiptera, comprising nearly 50 genera and 400 species. The group has often been treated as a subfamily of the Lygaeidae, but was resurrected as a full family by Thomas Henry (1997).
Neoguraleus huttoni is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Mangeliidae.
Orsillinae is a subfamily of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are at least 110 described species in Orsillinae.
Wēkiu bug is the name given to two species of closely related flightless seed bugs in the genus Nysius that inhabit high elevations on the island of Hawaiʻi.
Kleidocerys is a genus of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are about 17 described species in Kleidocerys.
Xyonysius is a genus of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are about 10 described species in Xyonysius.
Nysius fuscovittatus is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae. It is found in North America.
Lyperobius is a weevil genus in the subfamily Molytinae. Most Lyperobius species live in sub-alpine and alpine grassland, feeding on members of the family Apiaceae. Adults are active by day and feed on flowers, seeds, leaves and stems of the host plant. Larvae are found in the thick roots, rhizomes and soil surrounding the root system. All members of this genus are endemic to New Zealand. With the exception of L. huttoni and L. nesidiotes, all species are only found on the South Island.
Malcidae is a family of true bugs in the order Hemiptera. There are at least 3 genera and more than 40 described species in Malcidae.
Ischnorhynchinae is a subfamily of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are about 16 genera and more than 70 described species in Ischnorhynchinae.
