The Pen Centre (originally Niagara Peninsula Shopping Centre) is the largest shopping mall in the Niagara Region, located in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.
The Pen Centre was built in 1957 as the Niagara Peninsula Centre, a single-level, outside strip mall anchored by Loblaws and 50 retail stores and opened in 1958. In 1966, the evolution of the Pen Centre included the addition of Simpsons-Sears and 80 new stores, making the Pen Centre the fourth largest shopping centre in Canada. The mall remained as an open strip, with landscaped walkways in between. By September 1975, the strip mall was enclosed and became a climate-controlled environment at the cost of $2 million. [1] [2] Located next to the Highway 406, it has over one million square feet of floor space and features over 180 stores, a major department store, a supermarket, a ten-screen movieplex, and several large format anchors. [3]
Famous Players opened the first SilverCity 8-screen multiplex cinema at that location on November 7, 1997. It is now owned by Landmark Cinemas.
In 2011, the mall began a $13 million renovation of the common space, including 3,600 sq. ft. of new skylights, a new food court, and floors and ceiling treatments. [4] The renovations were completed in 2012. [2]

Target announced opening a store in the Pen Centre's former Zellers location in 2013. Just over a year later, in April 2015, Target shuttered all of its Canadian stores. [6] Later in 2015, the location was sold to Walmart, [7] which began construction on a newly revamped building in February 2018, and opened on August 22, 2019. [8] Sears closed its store along with all other Canadian stores in January 2018. [9] The former space occupied by Sears was renovated into two large format stores Sport Chek which relocated from elsewhere in the mall (opening summer 2020) and Mark's (opening early 2021) as well as numerous smaller retail spaces. In addition, Trillium College opened in the basement of this space in November 2020. [10] As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic environment the remainder of these retail units remain vacant. [11]
Zellers was a Canadian discount store chain founded by Walter P. Zeller in 1931. It was acquired by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1978, and after a series of acquisitions and expansions, peaked with 350 locations in 1999. However, fierce competition and an inability to adapt during the retail apocalypse resulted in Zellers losing significant ground in the 2000s.
Billings Bridge Shopping Centre is a shopping mall located in the Billings Bridge neighbourhood of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is a medium-sized community mall with 83 stores and services. Roughly 7.5 million people visit the mall every year and sales are about $527/sq foot. When built, it was the first strip mall in Ottawa, although it has since become an enclosed mall. Masonville Place is a two-storey regional shopping mall located in London, Ontario, Canada, at the southeast corner of Fanshawe Park Road and Richmond Street. The mall contains over 130 stores, several restaurants, and a food court. Kingsway Mall is a shopping centre located in central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The mall, constructed in 1976, completed a $70-million redevelopment from 2007–2009. The "Revealing" held at the weekend of 13 November 2009, saw the name change, introduced the public to the new mall, and opened the winter shopping season. Bordered by three major commuter roads, Kingsway Mall is situated near NAIT and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. On 14 March 2014, its Target location opened, but closed in 2015. Also, in 2015, Forever 21 opened in the former Smitty's and Sheffield Express. It also had the last Smart Set in Edmonton. Hot Topic opened in the mall in the Fall of 2015, and it is the first in Edmonton. In 2017, they announced they would go under a renovation adding a new wing of the mall in the former Target. On July 8, 2021, Walmart announced that it would be exiting its current Westmount Centre Location and relocating to Kingsway Mall in the former Sears space on October 20, 2022. A portion of the former Sears where the store's Sears Home entrance and section were located, was not taken over by Walmart, and that space was replaced by Fit 4 Less, on February 22, 2023.

Target Canada opened its first store in March 2013, and was operating 133 locations by January 2015. Its main competition included Walmart Canada, Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Canadian Tire.
