Penthetria is a genus of March flies (Bibionidae). [2]
Xylomyidae is a family of flies known commonly as the wood soldier flies. They are xylophagous and are associated with dead or dying wood.
The Chioneinae are a subfamily of limoniid crane flies.
Rhagio is a worldwide genus of predatory snipe flies. Several species in this genus are referred to as downlooker or down-looker flies because they sometimes perch on tree trunks in a head-down position. There are approximately 170 species. They can be distinguished from other rhagionids by the open anal cell on the wings and the lack of a kidney-shaped arista.
Xylota is a Holarctic genus of hoverflies similar in structure to the related genera Chalcosyrphus and Brachypalpoides. As the larvae are saprophytic they're usually found in rotting wood. The adult flies are generally associated with woodland and woodland edges and can often be seen running over the upper sides of leaves. Unlike other syrphids the adults of many species rarely visit flowers preferring instead to gather pollen from leaf surfaces. There are over 100 described species of which 12 can be found in Europe. Seven species have been recorded in Britain.
Chironomini is a tribe of midges in the non-biting midge family (Chironomidae).
Tanytarsini is a tribe of midges in the non-biting midge family (Chironomidae).
Epiphragma is a genus of crane fly in the family Limoniidae.
Hexatoma is a genus of crane fly in the family Limoniidae.
Pselliophora is a genus of true crane fly.
Bibio, March flies or St. Mark's flies, is a genus of flies (Diptera).
Milesia is a genus of very large hoverflies, which mimic social wasps. For example, the European species Milesia crabroniformis is a convincing mimic of the hornet species Vespa crabro.
Oxycera is a genus of soldier flies in the family Stratiomyidae. There are at least 80 described species in Oxycera.
Pachygastrinae is a subfamily of flies in the family Stratiomyidae.
Solva is a fly genus in the family Xylomyidae, the "wood soldier flies".
Plecia is a genus of March flies (Bibionidae).
Ortalis is an historic genus of Ulidiid or picture-winged flies, first described by Fallén in 1810. It served as the type genus for the family Ulidiidae, which was called Ortalidae at the time. In 1932, it was pointed out by Adlrich that the name Ortalis was preoccupied by a genus of birds which had been named by Merrem in 1786. The name of the fly family was therefore revised, with some authors calling it Otitidae until Ulidiidae was settled on as standard. The genus itself was found to be paraphyletic, and all of its species have been reassigned to other genera, some in the Ulidiidae, and some in other Tephritoid families. In the following list, the species are organized according to the families and genera to which they have been reassigned.
Penthetria heteroptera is a species of March fly in the family Bibionidae. It is widespread in the Americas and has been recorded in Europe.
