Peter Arthur Tancred (born 20 October 1949) is a male former athlete, and professional strongman from England.

Athletics career

Tancred was born on 20 October 1949 in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan, [1] the younger brother of Bill Tancred. In Britain he became affiliated to Queens Park Harriers in London. He competed at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. [2] Domestically, he was the British Champion (AAA) twice (in 1977 and 1978), [3] following in the footsteps of his brother Bill who won the title seven times.

He represented England in the discus event, at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. [4] Four years later he represented England in the discus event, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. [5] [6]

Strongman career

In 1984 he competed in Britain's Strongest Man coming second behind Alan Crossley and two years later won Britain's Most Powerful Man, the replacement for the absent Britain's Strongest Man competition that year.

William Raymond Tancred is a leading sports administrator, academic and former international athlete. He competed at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics in the discus and won a bronze and silver medals in successive Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. He was the British National discus champion on seven occasions and held the British record for 25 years his personal best being 64.94m in 1974. He also competed in the shot put and remains one of the top ten British shot putters. Athleticsweekly.com has ranked Tancred as the greatest British discus thrower of all-time by virtue of his long reign as British record-holder and profusion of AAA titles.

Paul Stuart Mardle is a male former discus thrower.

Mark Pharaoh was a track and field athlete, who competed in the discus throw at both the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics where he came fourth. This has been described as by far the finest single achievement in British discus history. He was also an international shot put and hammer thrower. He was fifth in the shot put at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and second in the hammer at the 1953 Summer International University Sports Week.

Michael Robert Lindsay was a British track and field athlete who competed in the discus throw and shot put disciplines. He represented Great Britain at the 1960 Summer Olympics and in the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Simon Alexander Williams is a male British former shot putter and discus thrower. He was the gold medallist in the shot put at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. He also represented Great Britain in the discus at the 1991 World Championships in Athletics and the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Billy Cole is a male British former track and field athlete who specialised in the shot put. His personal best for the event was 19.01 m. His sole major achievement was a gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. He also won three UK Championships and four AAA titles

David Lorne Steen is a Canadian former track and field athlete who specialised in the shot put. He was a two-time gold medallist in the event at the Commonwealth Games in 1966 and 1970, breaking games records both times. He had won the bronze medal at the 1962 event. His personal record was 19.21 m, set in 1970.

Julia Mary Avis is a female former track and field athlete who competed for England in the discus throw.

Lee Newman is a Welsh male athlete who competes in the shot put and discus events. He has personal best distances of 18.85 metres and 60.48 metres respectively in these events. Newman was National Record Holder in the Discus for more than a decade.
