Peter Mott House is an historic home that is the oldest standing residence in Lawnside, New Jersey. It was the home of Peter and Eliza Mott, a freed Black farmer, carpenter, pastor, and a "stationmaster" on the Underground Railroad. It is located in close proximity to Interstate 295, the New Jersey Turnpike, and the White Horse Pike.
What is now Lawnside, New Jersey has been a refuge to African Americans since the late 18th century. Methodist gatherings were established by 1797, and in 1811, Bishop Richard Allen of Philadelphia founded the local African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), which eventually became the Mount Pisgah AME Church today. [3] AME churches were premised on abolition and civil rights, primarily serving former slaves and their descendants. It may be this church that drew the Motts to the area.
Records show that Peter Mott purchased his first lot in the newly founded community of Free Haven (now Lawnside) in 1844, just four years after Quaker abolitionists had set aside the land for an African American community.
Born between 1800 and 1810, Peter Mott was a Black man likely born into slavery in Delaware to parents from Delaware and Maryland. He managed to escape and settle in present-day Camden County around 1830, marrying Eliza Thomas on November 2, 1833. [4] Census records show no children. In the 1840 census, Mott was a free "person of color," aged 24-36, working as a farmer and living with a female, likely Elizabeth Ann Thomas. [5] The 1850 census listed Mott as a 40-year-old laborer who was supposedly illiterate and born in New Jersey, alongside "Eliza Ann" Mott. The 1860 census is similar but does not list them as illiterate.
In the 1870 census (post-Civil War), Peter Mott, aged 60, was now listed as literate and owning real estate worth $1000, with a personal estate valued at $250. This suggests that he was among the wealthier residents of the town, then called Snow Hill. [4] Notably, Peter's birthplace was now recorded as Delaware, while Ann's birthplace was listed as Virginia, both former slave-holding states. [5]
Despite this, Mott's literacy is evident from his signature on documents and his role as a minister, although Elizabeth's "X" signature suggests she may indeed have been illiterate. [5] Mistakes, reluctance, or secrecy could explain contradictions in these records. The fact that Mott's name does not appear in any New Jersey records until his marriage in 1833 raises the likelihood that he himself had once escaped to freedom via the Underground Railroad. [5] This would provide further insight into why his literacy (like his birthplace) may have been downplayed or kept a secret prior to the Thirteenth Amendment.
Deeds from 1879 indicate that Peter sold his house to one Lewis Moore, but he is still listed in the 1880 census. This census, the last one conducted during Peter Mott's lifetime, records him as a widowed plaster mason. He died the following year due to valvular heart disease. He was laid to rest in the "Snow Hill Church" (Mount Pisgah) Cemetery. [5]
The Underground Railroad was a loosely connected system of volunteers who helped runaway slaves escape to freedom. It was largely undocumented, but strong oral history in the Black community provides evidence of its existence. [6]
According to oral testimony and local circumstantial evidence, the Motts were involved in the Underground Railroad and used their home in Snow Hill as a station. For example, local resident Doris Scott remembered that her grandmother recounted a story of Peter Mott taking fugitive slaves in his wagon to Quakers in Haddonfield and Moorestown. [5] The credibility of this story is supported by the fact that Miss Scott's grandmother was a neighbor of Mott and attended the same church, but it is also circumstantial because it cannot be proved outright. [4] As with so much of the Underground Railroad, there is intentionally little evidence left behind. However, from Snow Hill, the freedom seekers would have had several possible avenues of escape, with routes leading to Pennsauken, Haddonfield, and Evesham.
The Peter Mott House is now the oldest standing residence in Lawnside, with current dimensions of approximately 15 by 40 feet (4.6 by 12.2 m). It is a compact rectangular wooden structure with two stories and a gable roof, constructed in two phases around 1845 and 1870. [7] The older part (southern side) features a full basement supported by brick and stone masonry foundation walls, while the newer section (northern side) has a shallow crawl space and brick foundation that maintains the original design. Inside, the house's interior corresponds to the unassuming exterior.
Following neglect since the last occupant's passing in 1987, the house narrowly escaped demolition in 1992, when a Pennsylvanian developer purchased the land and received approval to construct 20 townhouses. [8] Local residents united to form the Lawnside Historical Society, which commissioned a feasibility study to prevent the destruction. This ultimately led to the house's listing on National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The house is now owned and operated by the Lawnside Historical Society, who converted it into a local museum. The Peter Mott House is recognized on a national level as a sanctuary for the Underground Railroad. [9]

Lawnside is a borough in Camden County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Lawnside was developed in 1840 and incorporated in 1926 as the first independent, self-governing Black municipality north of the Mason–Dixon line. The United Parcel Service has a large depot in the borough. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 2,955, an increase of 10 (+0.3%) from the 2010 census count of 2,945, which in turn reflected an increase of 253 (+9.4%) from the 2,692 counted in the 2000 census.
Yardley is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. Yardley borders the Delaware River and Ewing, New Jersey to its east and Lower Makefield Township to its north, west, and south. The United States Post Office assigns many addresses in Lower Makefield Township the preferred city of "Yardley", although they are outside the borough. The population was 2,434 at the 2010 census. Yardley is part of the Delaware Valley metropolitan area.
William Still was an African-American abolitionist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a conductor of the Underground Railroad and was responsible for aiding and assisting at least 649 slaves to freedom towards North. Still was also a businessman, writer, historian and civil rights activist. Before the American Civil War, Still was chairman of the Vigilance Committee of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, named the Vigilant Association of Philadelphia. He directly aided fugitive slaves and also kept records of the people served in order to help families reunite.
The Indian King Tavern was a colonial American tavern in Haddonfield, Camden County, New Jersey, United States, which was the site of a 1777 meeting of the New Jersey Legislature adopted its Great Seal. It was the first State Historic Site, adopted as such in 1903. Its original structure remains largely intact. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Samuel D. Burris was a member of the Underground Railroad. He had a family, who he moved to Philadelphia for safety and traveled into Maryland and Delaware to guide freedom seekers north along the Underground Railroad to Pennsylvania.
Harriet Tubman National Historical Park is a US historical park in Auburn and Fleming, New York. Associated with the life of Harriet Tubman, it has three properties: the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged, in Auburn; the nearby Harriet Tubman Residence, just across the city/town line in Fleming; and the Thompson A.M.E. Zion Church in Auburn. They are located at 180 and 182 South Street and 90 Franklin Street, respectively. The Zion Church unit is administered by the National Park Service (NPS), and the South Street properties, including a historic barn and a visitor center, are jointly managed and operated by both the NPS and the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. The church also works with the NPS in park operations. The Harriet Tubman Grave, in nearby Fort Hill Cemetery, is not part of the park.
Thomas James (1804–1891) had been a slave who became an African Methodist Episcopal Zion minister, abolitionist, administrator and author. He was active in New York and Massachusetts with abolitionists, and served with the American Missionary Association and the Union Army during the American Civil War to supervise the contraband camp in Louisville, Kentucky. After the war, he held national offices in the AME Church and was a missionary to black churches in Ohio. While in Massachusetts, he challenged the railroad's custom of forcing blacks into second-class carriages and won a reversal of the rule in the State Supreme Court. He wrote a short memoir published in 1886.
Bethel AME Church, now known as the Central Pennsylvania African American Museum, is a historic African Methodist Episcopal church at 119 North 10th Street in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It was originally built in 1837, and is a 2½-storey brick and stucco building with a gable roof. It was rebuilt about 1867–1869, and remodeled in 1889. It features a three-storey brick tower with a pyramidal roof topped by a finial. The church is known to have housed fugitive slaves and the congregation was active in the Underground Railroad. The church is now home to a museum dedicated to the history of African Americans in Central Pennsylvania.
Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal Church in Springtown, New Jersey, United States. The church was part of two free negro communities, Othello and Springtown, established by local Quaker families, like the Van Leer Family. The congregation was established in 1810 in Greenwich Township as the African Methodist Society and joined the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1817. A previous church building was burned down in the 1830s in an arson incident and the current structure was built between 1838 and 1841.
Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church and Mount Zion Cemetery is a historic church and cemetery located at 172 Garwin Road in Woolwich Township, New Jersey, United States. The church was a stop on the Greenwich Line of the Underground Railroad through South Jersey operated by Harriet Tubman for 10 years. The church provided supplies and shelter to runaway slaves on their way to Canada from the South. The church and cemetery were part of the early 19th-century free negro settlement sponsored by Quakers known as Small Gloucester.
Star Hill AME Church, also known as Star of the East Church, is a historic African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church building and cemetery located in Dover, Delaware near Camden, Kent County, Delaware. It was constructed about 1866, and is a one-story, three-bay by three-bay, gable roofed, frame building in a vernacular Gothic Revival-style. It features a small bell tower at the roof ridge. Interments in the adjacent cemetery are believed to begin with the founding of the church in the 1860s, but the earliest marked grave dates from the early 1890s.
Appoquinimink Friends Meetinghouse, also known as the Odessa Friends Meetinghouse, is a very small but historic Quaker meetinghouse on Main Street in Odessa, Delaware. It was built in 1785 by David Wilson and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Members of the meeting, including John Hunn and his cousin John Alston, were active in the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman may have hid in the meetinghouse. Measuring about 20 feet (6.1 m) by 22 feet (6.7 m), it may be the smallest brick house of worship in the United States.

Mount Gilead African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic black church located atop Buckingham Mountain, near Holicong, Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Amy Hester "Hetty" Reckless was a runaway slave who became part of the American abolitionist movement. She campaigned against slavery and was part of the Underground Railroad, operating a Philadelphia safe house. She fought against prostitution and vice, working toward improving education and skills for the black community. Through efforts including operating a women's shelter, supporting Sunday Schools and attending conferences, she became a leader in the abolitionist community. After her former master's death, she returned to New Jersey and continued working to assist escaping slaves throughout the Civil War.
