Petrocephalus steindachneri is a species of electric fish in the family Mormyridae. It is native to the Rufuji River system, Tanzania [1]
This species reaches a length of 6.6 cm (2.6 in). [2]
The fish was named after Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner (1834–1919), who had described this species in 1914 but used a preoccupied name, P. affinisSauvage 1879 (=Stomatorhinus walkeri). [3]
Franz Steindachner was an Austrian zoologist, ichthyologist, and herpetologist. He published over 200 papers on fishes and over 50 papers on reptiles and amphibians. Steindachner described hundreds of new species of fish and dozens of new amphibians and reptiles. At least seven species of reptile have been named after him.
