Philip William "Otto" Stekl (born January 20, 1956) is an American former competitive rower and Olympic silver medalist. [1] Stekl graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Stekl qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but was unable to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. In 2007, he received one of 461 Congressional Gold Medals created especially for the spurned athletes. [2] At the 1984 Summer Olympics, Stekl finished in 2nd place in the men's coxless four competition with David Clark, Jonathan Smith, and Alan Forney. [3]
Gwen Wentz Cheeseman-Alexander is a former field hockey goalkeeper from the United States, who was a member of the 1980 Olympic team that qualified for Olympics but did not compete due to the Olympic Committee's boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. She was one of 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal years later. She was a member of the team that won the bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. She was also the goal keeper of the world in 1980. She coached many Division 1 teams and currently is a goalie coach at Washington and Lee University.

The event was won by the team from New Zealand.

New Zealand had won the last two world championships, and the other strong team, East Germany, was absent from the event due to the Eastern Bloc boycott. This made New Zealand the strong favourite. But the final was won by Canada, with the United States and Australia the other medallists, and New Zealand coming a disappointing fourth.
